CAP145:FUNDAMENTALS OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
Course Outcomes:
CO1 :: identify basic concepts and terminology of information technology
CO2 :: describe various memories and I/O devices
CO3 :: understand the working as well as the operations of the various components of operating
system
Unit I
Computer fundamentals : characteristics, classifications, generation of computers, block diagram of
computer, application of it in various sectors, data representation(binary, octal, hexadecimal, and
decimal number system) and their conversion.
Unit II
I/O devices and memory : types of memory, memory hierarchy, units of memory, RAM, ROM,
secondary storage devices, HDD, flash drives, optical disks, DVD, SSD, I/O devices, keyboard, mouse,
LCDs, scanner, plotter, printer, other latest I/O devices in market
Unit III
Operating systems : operating system basics, purpose of the operating system, types of operating
system, operating system operations, distributed system, special-purpose systems, computing
environments, open-source operating systems, running programs
Unit IV
Data communication and networks : local and global reach of the network, digital and analog
transmission, components of a data communication system, analog and digital signals, network
typologies, local area networks, metropolitan area network, wide area network, wireless networks,
internet
Unit V
Introduction to database and DBMS : working with a database, common corporate database
management systems, data independence
Software programming and development : planning a computer program, hardware/software
interaction, categories of programming languages, machine and assembly language, higher level
languages, www development languages
Unit VI
Advanced technologies(IoT and data analytics) : introduction to cloud computing and IoT, SaaS,
PaaS, IaaS, public and private cloud, evolution of IoT, history, applications of IOT, things in IoT,
sensors & actuators, data analytics and big data, overview of various tools used for data analytics
