The New Year has launched unprecedented circumstances for businesses who are not only
adapting to the fallout from Brexit but also the consequences of the ongoing pandemic. Of
course, not all of the fallout is negative: 35% of clients canvassed in the last quarter of 2020
reported a positive impact on business due to the pandemic; Following Brexit, 23% have either
recruited or plan to recruit to accommodate changes in procedure.
Companies have had to adapt quickly by investing in digital and virtual technology. Providing
robust systems and procedures in order to support change. Particularly in the development of
remote home office environments, which have become essential for employees to continue
working and business to thrive.
With so many outside influences, it makes benchmarking salaries challenging. However, it is
important to remember that in times of business uncertainty, Financial Planning, Reporting and
Analysis are even more vital. Candidate confidence is high with the knowledge that they are the
employees who will be called on to sort any financial chaos, caused by recent events.
Our research shows that the majority of salaries will remain unchanged in 2021. Employers
budget focus is on enhanced flexible benefits; particularly those supporting the mental health
and wellbeing of staff who are isolated whilst working remotely.
We have, however, witnessed enhanced salaries for roles still experiencing skill shortages:
including Project Accounting, Analysis, Insolvency, Credit Control / Management and Multi-
Currency Ledger positions.
On the flip side, we can also report a slight reluctance in the market place for day rates in the
£450 to £600 bracket. This is a reflection of projects possibly being shelved and the upcoming
changes in IR35 due in April 2021. Nevertheless, candidates in areas of high demand are still
able to command these daily rates.
Remote working has always been a sought after benefit for a large percentage of employees.
Now that the working at home culture is entrenched in the UK work place; post pandemic
teams will operate very differently. This will allow recruiters to draw on a much larger
geographic pool of talent with location being less significant in decision making.
Recruiters have also had to adapt to how they recruit; with remote interviewing and testing
procedures becoming common place. Businesses are not only looking for the right technical
skills but also striving to identify the soft skills which are essential for an individual to operate
in their home office. Candidates must be able to prove that they have the motivation, integrity
and initiative necessary to perform effectively without direct supervision. Conversely,
employers need to prove that they can support, include, train, track and value their teams.
