BBC Brief

  1. 1. BBC BRIEF KADEN SOWELS
  2. 2. MY IDEA • I wrote a story four years ago with a few friends from school. We never fully finished the story, but I have always wanted to continue it. We came up with the idea during a power outage in our town, when only a few plug sockets stopped working. Since our phone chargers were plugged into these certain sockets we started joking about a conspiracy where the outage was caused by secret agents from another country and then decided to write a story about it. We called it ‘Powerless’ 2
  3. 3. THE FULL STORY (or at least the full idea) • THE BEGINNING: The heroes are sat in their rooms, phones on charge. The lights flash for just a moment, and their phones stop charging. They call each other to see what happened, and slowly begin to figure out it has happened to the entire country. They take it upon themselves to solve the mystery. • THE MIDDLE: The heroes figure out what caused the outage: an opposing country that aims to collapse the government and the economy. The heroes set out to stop this collapse, getting themselves mixed up in something they definitely should not. • THE END: There are two ways it could end. OPTION ONE: The heroes save the country, but they do not get credit and they stay as the unsung heroes of the country OPTION TWO: The heroes fail to stop the collapse, living with the guilt for the rest of their lives. 3
  4. 4. CHARACTER PROFILES
  5. 5. Cal walker (They/Them) • Cal Walker lives in London. They are 18 years old. • They take physics at college. • They are shy to strangers, but can be very confident with friends. They are also very introverted. • Cal is also quite messy sometimes, but can be organised if needs be. They are also quite smart. • They are very active, choosing to walk to classes and hangouts rather than take public transport. • They can be very rude to people they do not like, but are also very caring to loved ones. • They are also quite creative. • ADDITIONAL NOTES: Oldest (1 day older than LJ) • ISTP 5
  6. 6. Freya Michaels (She/Her) • Freya Michaels lives in London, having moved there from Manchester when she was 14. She is 16-17 years old. • She takes a level mathematics at college. • She is quite shy, even in her group of friends and is fairly introverted. • She does not get angry easily, but when she does it doesn’t last long. She is also not very organised, through no fault of her own. • She is very smart and active, and is not usually rude, similar to her anger. • She is more eclectic rather than creative, and is very caring towards her loved ones. • ADDITIONAL NOTES: The youngest of the heroes. • ISTJ 6
  7. 7. Charlie Johnson (He/Him) • Charlie Johnson is a British teenager living in London. He is 17 years old. • He studies digital production, design and development at college and is in a relationship with LJ. • He is fairly confident within his friend group, but outside of that he is quite introverted and does have a very short fuse, anger wise. • He is quite organised with things, especially his college work and is also one of the highest achievers in his class. He is very active and healthy, he goes for runs every day possible (when he is not busy with course work and studying) • He is quite creative in his thinking and is caring to the people he loves, yet to people he does not know, or people he does not trust he can be incredibly rude, but this is so that he can protect his loved ones. • ISFP 7
  8. 8. LJ: Lincoln James (He/Him) • Lincoln James lives in London, a few streets away from his boyfriend Charlie. He is 18 years old. • He takes music at college. • LJ is very confident in all aspects of life, and is extremely extroverted, unlike Charlie. • Similar to his boyfriend, LJ has a fairly short fuse with others, Charlie being the one exception. • He is quite messy, much to the annoyance of Charlie (who goes around cleaning up after him). • He is not classes as extremely smart, nor extremely dumb and is somewhere in the middle of the two. He has certain knowledges. • LJ is also quite active and goes to the gym at least twice a week. He is also quite rude to others, again, Charlie being the one exception. • He is neither creative nor not creative, again falling somewhere in the middle, and is quite caring to his loved ones. • ENFP • ADDITIONAL NOTES: LJ is a smoker. 8
  9. 9. Felix Nicholson (He/Him) • Felix Nicholson is a Swiss spy. He is between the ages of 19-21. • As of now he lives in London, but is originally from Switzerland. • Felix is a very confident person and is also very extroverted. • He can get very angry when things don’t go his way, or when someone interferes with his plans. He is quite organised, but also quite messy if he wants to be. He likes to play games that benefit him. • Felix is very smart and calculated, planning his moves carefully. He is also very active and athletic, and he took gymnastics for four years when he was 15. • He is very rude to the opposing side, and even sometimes to people on his side. He is very creative when it comes to his job, and is also very cold towards everyone, unless being caring would benefit him. • ESTJ • ADDITIONAL NOTES: Drug addict, alcoholic 9
  10. 10. What makes my idea different?
  11. 11. Similarities to other shows • Though my idea is similar to other programmes and movies, there are certain, big elements that are completely different to existing products. • I believe the power outage trope mixed with another country being responsible has not been done before. There have been programmes where issues happen and another country is responsible, but I believe none of them have used a power outage as the issue. • Whilst my idea is similar to the popular Netflix show Stranger Things, there are many different aspects, such as a spy infiltrating the heroes or the fact that there is no big monster for the heroes to fight at the end. • My idea also has nothing to do with the supernatural and it is not a horror, like Stranger Things is. 11
  12. 12. Target Audience • I believe for this sort of programme, the target audience would be somewhere between 16 and 25, if not slightly older. To work this out I have looked into other similar programmes that relate to my idea and figured out that the target audience for those products have been around the same ages for each different programme. • Using this information I believe that my target audience will also be the same as these similar products because it is something they enjoy watching. • I also believe that my target audience may relate to some of the main characters, as I aim to, in a way, modernise their personalities, forming them around the personalities of people I know (whilst trying not to explicitly use a friends personality without permission in the story) 12
  13. 13. What channel would it be shown on and when • I believe a programme or movie like this would most likely be on BBC3, as many programmes and movies on there are targeted towards 16-25 year olds. It could be on other channels but I believe the main one would be BBC3. • I think a product like this would be best to air at some point during 4pm and 7pm, as this is when most school/college students get home, and is when most workers arrive home as well, so they would have time to watch it rather than having to record it and watch it later in the evening. • I also believe that this programme would last anywhere between 40-60 minutes, as it gives the characters time to work through the issue. Many TV shows have an issue set out for each different episode, but for this programme, each episode would be them continuously working through the same problem, as the issue would not be able to be solved in 40 minutes. • A programme like this would most likely only have one season, but the amount of episodes would be determined by how much the target audience enjoyed the first few episodes, as with any tv show. 13
