Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be
Understood TM
Principles of Empathic Communication by Stephen
R. Covey
2. The title above is Habit #5 from The 7 Habits of
Highly Effective People by the late Stephen
Covey. The ability to understand others first is
the path to effectiveness and success. This no
longer falls under the category of public
success, but rather as personal success.
Seek first to be understood, then be
understood
3. So what happens when we focus on us,
rather than the person we engage a
conversation with?It means that we may:
Ignore their message entirely
We can quickly forget their name (if they are newly
introduced)
Selectively engage, picking up on some element of
the conversation, but taking things out of perspective
Blatantly not listen and make matters worse
4. Covey uses the Greek philosophy of ethos, pathos
and logos to describe the sequence for effective
communication at the heart of Habit 5:
Ethos: Establishing personal credibility, integrity
and competency—character that inspires trust
Pathos: Listening with empathy; understanding
others’ feelings and points of view
Logos: Explaining with logic and reason;
considering all known facts and perceptions
5. How to Practice Habit
5: Seek First to
Understand then to
be Understood
6. Step 1 : Pay Attention
Step 2 :Repeat and Ask
Questions
Step 3: Empathise
Step4: Rephrase Their Content
and How They Feel
Step 5: Now Act Based on The
Situation
This is built around empathic listening.
Here’s how to get started.
7. Empathic listening
Most people don't listen because they intend to
understand. They listen with the intention of
responding. They are speaking or preparing to
speak. They filter everything through their own
paradigm, reading their autobiography into other
people's lives.
Covey uses the Greek philosophies Ethos, Pathos,
and Logos to describe the order of effective
communication at the heart of the 5th Habit.
8. Covey uses the Greek philosophies Ethos,
Pathos, and Logos to describe the order of
effective communication at the heart of the 5th
Habit.
• ethos:
Creating personal credibility, integrity and competence -
character traits that create trust
• Pathos:
Listen with empathy. understand the feelings and thoughts of
others
• logo:
I will explain the logic and why. take into account all known facts
and perceptions
9. Empathy vs Sympathy
Empathy is deep understanding-emotionally and
intellectually.
Sympathy is a form of approval
10. Empathic listening promotes open and deep communication. A discerning empathic listener
can read what’s happening down deep fast, and can show such acceptance, such
understanding, that other people feel safe to open up layer after layer until they get to the soft
inner core where the problem really lies.
