Experience iskeytoall knowledge and mydiverse workhistoryandtime atuniversityhave givenme
a wealthof experience. Mybachelor’sdegree isinSportDevelopment,andwhilststudying I
embarkeduponanumberof sportingventuresinordertoenhance myskillsetinpreparationfora
careerin sport.
Withthe firsttwoyearsof mydegree focusingoncoaching,Ibeganworkas a SportsCoach withK:A
Leisure.Thisgave me myfirstinsight intothe worldof sportdevelopment,workingacrossall
departments andliaisingwithlocal schoolsandthe community. Here Iundertookthe
responsibilitiesof coachingandintroducingchildrenfromthe age of 3years+ toa wide varietyof
sports, developingsportsprogrammestomeetthe needsandabilitiesof all individualsandI assisted
withthe planning,organisingandexecutionof the TescoBankFootball Challenge Festival. Igaineda
tremendousamountof supervisoryexperience,knowledgeof sportin the community withinandout
witha sportssetting,the abilitytoproblemsolveanduse the resourcesavailable tome,aswell as
workingaspart of a larger team,all withthe similargoalsof makingthe sportingexperience
enjoyable forourparticipantsandstaff,inanenvironmentthatissafe and allowsandencourages
growth.
At the age of 18, I washiredto workat AHRCCamp Anne. CampAnne isa special needs summer
camp basedinupstate NewYorkwhich,catersfor adults and childrenwithintellectual,
developmental andphysical disabilities. Beginningmytime here asa general counsellorallowedme
to work1:1 or 2:1 withthe individuals(childrenandadults), meetingtheireveryneedandenjoying
activitiessuchasswimming,horse ridingandartsand crafts.As I returnedtoCamp Anne fora third
summerI waspromotedtoa more programmaticrole andgiventhe positionof Assistant
Programme Coordinator.ThismeantI wasresponsible fororganising anddevisingthe sportsand
activitiesprogramme forapproximately115individualspersessionand120+ staff, cateringto all
abilitylevelse.g.wheelchairusers. Whilstorganisingarecreationscheduleforstaff ontheirdown
time,mypassionfornetball wasreignited.Ibroughttogetherateamof girls,we practicedon our
nightsoff andplayedfriendlycompetitionsagainstoursistercampandother nearbysummer
camps.
ReturningtoCamp Anne formy fourthand fifthsummerssaw me promotedtoUnitCoordinator
(highestlevel of promotion).Thisrole meantI wasresponsibleforoverseeing120+ staff,training,
orientatingandsupportingthem.Ialsohadmanyadministrativedutiessuchasliaisingwith
parents/guardiansandupdatingagencypolicies.ThismeantI hadto be extremelyorganisedand
manage my time accordinglytocarry out myrolesand responsibilitieseffectively.Beingthe face for
so manymembersof staff meantthat I hadto supervise people significantlyolderthanme and
people frommanydifferentcultures.Thishashelpedmake me abetterleader,givingme the skillset
and toolsto deal withstressfulsituationsandanyissuesthatmayarise. Choosingtoreturnto Camp
Anne forthe last 5 summersshowsIhave a real passionforworkingwith people inarecreation
settingandthe fact that I was veryquicklypromotedprovesthatI was a competentandvalued
memberof staff.
In mycurrent role as Social Programme Coordinator,Iamresponsibleforthe coordinationand
executionof the Game On!Project.Thisinvolvesme runningavarietyof recreationandsocial
programmesforchildrenandteenswithAutismandworkinginpartnershipwiththe EastAyrshire
SportsDevelopmentteamtoallowinfiltrationintomainstreamactivities. Mydutieshere have made
2. me familiarwithfinance andbudgets,the importance of beingorganised,workinginmulti-
disciplinaryteams,conductingintakesandevaluationswithnew applicantsandinterviewingand
recruitingvolunteerstaff.
Outside of workI enjoyavarietyof recreational activitiesandama keensportswoman.Icurrently
playnetball forIrvine MeadowLadies2and we are enjoyingandlearningfromourfirstseasoninthe
Ayrshire League.Iamalso a huge rugbyfanatic, and I try to go to as manyof the internationalgames
as I can. I enjoythe outdoorsandI love totravel to differentcountriesandvariouspartsof the UK
whenI have the time.Ialsolike tospendtime withmyfriendsandfamilyhavingmealsoutor
attendingmusicconcerts. Ienjoysocial environments,experiencingdifferentculturesandamfun-
loving.
The role soundsidentical towhatI am strivingforina career. Many of the responsibilitiesyou
indicate thisrole encompassesare facetsIam alreadyfamiliarwith,andhave spent the majorityof
my careerworkingwith,andfallinginlove withall thatthe sportingcommunityinvolves. From
workingasa sportscoach withK:A Leisure;tocoordinatinganddeliveringrecreationactivitiesfor
individualswithadditional supportneeds andsupervisingalarge staff teamof younglocal and
international studentsandseeingthemdepartasmore rounded,accomplishedandconfidentyoung
adults,Itruly believe Iwasmade tobe part of thiscommunity.Ibelieve thatIwouldbe agreat asset
to the AccessSport teamas I have a wealthof experience,Iama confidentpublicspeakeranda
personable characterthatthrivesina dynamicenvironment.
