Introduction Student Page Title Introduction Task Process Evaluation Conclusion Credits [ Teacher Page ] Drugs are powerful. With even one use, they can shatter lives. Many addicts say that their addiction began with experimentation in adolescence with seemingly harmless drugs such as marijuana. Today, experts know that drug use is not only dangerous to the body’s and mind’s of the addicted, but also damaging to the people around them as well. Now is the time for you to explore recreational drugs and discover their problems and solutions!
The Task Student Page Introduction Task Process Evaluation Conclusion Credits [ Teacher Page ] You will research a recreational drug from the list below. Your research will done using the internet. Utilizing the websites provided for you, sift through and gather as much relevant information as is necessary for a creative, informative, and accurate public awareness campaign highlighting the dangers of and solutions to the chosen drug. Your public awareness campaign may be in the form of 1.) a neatly organized flyer made on Microsoft Publisher to be presented in front of the class or 2.) a commercial that will be acted out in front of the class at the conclusion of this project.   Alcohol Amphetamines Caffeine Cocaine Ecstasy Inhalants LSD Marijuana Methamphetamine Opium Title

Introduction (Teacher) [ Student Page ] Title Introduction Learners Standards Process Resources Credits Teacher Page This lesson was developed as part of a Education Technology and Assessment (EDUC 331) course offered at Colorado State University in the Spring of 2008.  This lesson’s purpose is to identify the problems and solutions to some of the most common recreational drugs found in America and help 9 th  grade students make informed choices about their health. This project also provides a creative outlet for students by giving them the opportunity to make a flyer or presentation for the class to present their research. It is a great way to allow students to become teachers.  Evaluation Teacher Script Conclusion
Learners (Teacher) [ Student Page ] Title Introduction Learners Standards Process Resources Credits Teacher Page This project has been created for Teen Choices (or any similar Family and Consumer Sciences or Health course). It should be implemented during the drugs and alcohol unit and will help meet the course’s “Health Issues” requirements. It involves the use of research tools and writing skills.  This project can serve as a good introduction to an appropriate topic. Before this project, students should have a firm understanding of internet research and your expectations of final products. The Process (Teacher)  Slide Two [ Student Page ] Title Introduction Learners Standards Process Resources Credits Teacher Page This lesson is organized into three parts: 1. “Before you begin” 2. Research 3. Public awareness campaign The project will involve 2-3 class periods to allow for the collaboration needed. It is interdisciplinary between research methods and health. As the teacher, it is up to your discretion how students should be divided into groups. I would suggest groups of 3-4 students who work well together. Remember: You know your students the best, so set them up with success!  Skills: To complete this lesson, you will need a good understanding of the recreational drugs that your students will be researching so that you can evaluate the accuracy of the information. Also, classroom management will be important. Keeping students on task while working in groups is always a challenge. Many addicts say that their addiction began with experimentation in adolescence with seemingly harmless drugs such as marijuana. Today, experts know that drug use is not only dangerous to the body’s and mind’s of the addicted, but also damaging to the people around them as well. Now is the time for you to explore recreational drugs and discover their problems and solutions!

Utilizing the websites provided for you, sift through and gather as much relevant information as is necessary for a creative, informative, and accurate public awareness campaign highlighting the dangers of and solutions to the chosen drug. This lesson’s purpose is to identify the problems and solutions to some of the most common recreational drugs found in America and help 9 th grade students make informed choices about their health. This project also provides a creative outlet for students by giving them the opportunity to make a flyer or presentation for the class to present their research. Research 3. Public awareness campaign The project will involve 2-3 class periods to allow for the collaboration needed. It is interdisciplinary between research methods and health. As the teacher, it is up to your discretion how students should be divided into groups. I would suggest groups of 3-4 students who work well together. Remember: You know your students the best, so set them up with success! Skills: To complete this lesson, you will need a good understanding of the recreational drugs that your students will be researching so that you can evaluate the accuracy of the information. Also, classroom management will be important. Keeping students on task while working in groups is always a challenge.
