CARPOOL INITIATIVE
STRATEGIC CONSULTING
Our university currently has about 16,000 students. The school has expanded our student body by
2000 students over the last 3 years and continues to expand with the ultimate goal of 20,000 students
in mind. With only 992 highly contested commuter parking spots,As a result, the volume of cars
parked on campus has become an issue. To add onto the heavy amount of cars on campus, many
students tend to only drive themselves. Our main goal was to find a sustainable and cost efficient
solution to this mounting transportation issue.
The city of Binghamton, our local community, has been economically deprived for some time.
Small business owners in the city of Binghamton often lack formal business knowledge and
expertise. They have no exposure to new operational, marketing, and financial initiatives. This
disadvantage, along with their shortage of resources to hire those capable of helping them, has made
maintaining a business in this area extremely difficult.
Because of our success in the trial run last year, we were given permission by the University Parking
Services Department to expand the program and include 135 users. We have also added spots to an
additional lot on the opposite end of campus. This gives students the choice of either lot depending on
where their classes are located. We continued our marketing and advertising efforts both on and off
campus to increase our user base and draw more attention to the carpooling program. This was done
through various marketing strategies including coffee sleeves advertisements at our on campus coffee
shop and tabling/quarter sheets in off campus student apartment complexes.
• We have saved 207 cars from coming to campus - a 10 mile commute on average
• 57 people have used the spots at least once. Out of those people, 60% have used it 3 or more times and
50% have used it 4 or more times.
• There have been 619 people affected by this program resulting in a 42% utilization rate
• We have saved 202 gallons (weighted average/Total miles saved) which has amounted to $460 of savings at
the pump (Amount of Avg Gallons saved/Average gas price).
• The cost of maintaining spots on campus is around $550 per spot. With an average of 28
less people driving to campus the Parking Service saves $471 a week.
• $471 saved a week which amounts to $23,000 in annual savings
• Potential gas saved is 1,028 gallons, or $2,056 dollars of gas.

We took what we learned from Enactus and our classes to create business models and strategies to
empower these businesses and nonprofits and help them generate more profit. This year, we took on
three businesses/nonprofits: the Ross Park Zoo (nonprofit), Jake’s NY Headquaters, and Callahan’s
Sportsman Club. We consulted their books, marketing and advertising techniques, and general business
knowledge to create new ways to do business. We found that by providing them with different views, we
were able to increase their revenue streams and even help them thrive in a poor economy.
• Increase 10 to 30 customers a week at Jake’s NY Headquarters, a barbershop
• $20,280 potential increase in sales for Jake’s NY Headquarters
• We were able to partner with 3 new businesses and increase profits throughout the business.
• We sent our team into the streets and distributed 600 door hangs in Downtown Binghamton. As a direct
result, we had a $150 increase in profits for that following week for Callahan’s Sportsman Club
• For the Ross Park Zoo, we were able to raise awareness to over 130 new people through fliers and
pamphlets in order to help the nonprofit receive more donations

CHING
The families of the Maasai tribe live in extreme poverty. An average family size in the tribe is 12
people, each living on less than $.35 per day. They live in an area where a drought killed off 90% of
their livestock in 2009. The Maasai tribe relies on goats to provide much needed milk and nutrients for
the families.
Our team has used multiple strategies to fundraise for the Maasai tribe including a 5k called ‘Running with
the Goats’, and personally selling hand-made beaded jewelry. For the past few years we have been selling
the jewelry on our campus, in stores in our local community, and on an online marketplace. This year, we
have been actively seeking partnership with other groups on campus to include the jewelry in on-campus
fashion shows so that they can be auctioned off at the end of the shows. We have also launched a new
objective within the project. We hope to take $700 of the total amount we raise in a year to sponsor one of
the Maasai girls to attend an excellent boarding school. With this money, she will be able to afford school
uniforms, tuition, and food. Approximately 73% of girls are subjected to female genital mutilation in the
Massai Tribe within Kenya. This opportunity to obtain an education will protect her from this horrific
experience as well as preventing the possibility of an early marriage.
College students everywhere have things they need to sell, but selling their belongings can prove to
be a tough endeavor. Online marketspaces like eBay take heavy percentages of profit from sellers,
and Craigslist can be an unreliable and sketchy way to meet up with strangers. Students need a
platform where they can buy and sell belongings with other students easily and reliably.
We began developing Ching early in the Fall 2015 semester. Ching is being developed as a
marketspace where students can buy and sell their belongings with other students. We helped Ching
by providing them with a marketing campaign and by helping develop Ching’s website.
• We are currently in the process of filing a patent for this project.
• With only two people working on the project, they will be able to make an indirect human impact of
48,000 students between Binghamton University and Boston University
• Also, they will be able to make an indirect financial impact close to $2,660,000, with an average
savings projected at $25 per student
• Raised $1,422 for the Maasai Tribe this year through fundraising and bracelet selling
• With this, we purchased 21 goats for 21 families
• We have affected about 252 people this year since the average family size is 12 people
• We were also able to fund one girl’s boarding school education
• In total, Enactus has provided 116 goats for 116 Maasai Tribe families

CLEAN ENERGY
The world’s environment is suffering due to our human actions. Before we know, our climate and
environment will change rapidly unless we are able to put a stop to global warming.
Our Enactus team saw Governor Cuomo’s Reforming the Energy Vision Challenge as a perfect opportunity
to not only help out our environment and the community, but also be a part of something bigger. The
Enactus team was able to consult with or recruit faculty and staff from the following departments:
Chemistry, Economics, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Science, Entrepreneurship, Geology,
Industrial Systems Engineering, Materials Science, The Office of the President, The Department of
Research. They also spoke with industry professionals from Siemens Energy Inc. and Ashley McGraw
Architects.
• Joined up with a large group of experienced faculty members who had helped the Southern Tier to win the
Upstate Revitalization Initiative which awarded the area $500 million
• Created a proposal in which an older property would be rebuilt as a living building - one of less than 10 in
the country.
• Also, the proposal would create a tracking system of dorms which will students instant feedback about their
energy consumption and hopefully modifying their behavior based on incentives and a social media aspect
