Factors such as weight gain between treatments, urine output and swelling are considered. If you are on hemodialysis, your weight is recorded before and after your dialysis session. Your nurse uses weight changes to help determine how much fluid to remove during dialysis. Sudden weight gain may mean you are drinking too much fluid. Hemodialysis patients who no longer urinate may have liquids restricted to 32 ounces or 1000ml each day. Those who still urinate some may be able to safely take in more fluids, however the staff at your hemodialysis unit will help you figure out your individualized fluid restrictions. You will need to do a 24 hour urine to determine this. What can I eat?In addition to enjoying a variety of nutritious foods, the hemodialysis diet will introduce a higher amount of protein into your eating plan. The exact amount will be determined by your dietitian. You will be encouraged to get protein from high quality sources such as lean meat, poultry, fish and egg whites. These high protein foods provide all the essential amino acids your body needs.What can’t I eat?The hemodialysis diet will restrict foods that contain high amounts of sodium, phosphorus and potassium. Your dietitian will provide you with a diet guide and food lists that indicate which foods are allowed and which ones you should avoid or limit. You will also limit your fluid intake.-1000125-914400Why do I have to eat this way?Your dietitian and doctor will strongly recommend you follow the hemodialysis diet, so your dialysis treatments will be effective and you can feel your best. You will also reduce the risk of other health complications associated with kidney disease and dialysis.Since your kidneys are not functioning properly your body is unable to secrete the added toxins and fluids you ingest.
