The Dugout Club thanks supporters for their continued contributions which help Fresno State Baseball succeed both on the field and in the classroom. In 2015, the team had several individual honors and 16 players named Academic All-Conference, showing excellence both athletically and academically. Looking ahead, the 2016 season schedule is announced, including home games against Creighton, Oklahoma, and conference opponents, preparing the team for postseason play. Community service remains important to the program.
1. BASELINESTHE OFFICIAL PUBLICATION OF THE BULLDOG FOUNDATION DUGOUT CLUB
As we prepare this Fall for the upcoming 2016 season, we would like to take this
opportunity to say thank you to the Fresno State Baseball Dugout Club and our
Alumni for their continued support of Bulldog Baseball. Your contributions and
support drives our athletes to be a nationally ranked program both on the field and
in the classroom. In recent years, the Dugout Club and our Alumni have helped
with many projects that have improved Bulldog Baseball and Beiden Field. These
projects have helped to keep us moving forward and they have been an excellent
recruiting aid. Bringing in the top players in the country is paramount to bringing
more championships home to Beiden Field.
In 2015 we were led by First Team All-MWC performers Taylor Ward, Taylor
Tempel and Garrett Mundell. Ward is a back-to-back All-MW selection, and only
Bulldog to hold that honor. Taylor Tempel led the Mountain West in hitting to
end his Bulldog career as a senior. These three athletes were followed by Second
Team All-MWC candidates Austin Guibor and Jake Shull. Additionally, Taylor
Ward, Garrett Mundell and Jake Shull were selected into the 2015 Major League
Baseball Draft. Over the last 13 seasons, a total of 64 Bulldogs have been drafted
and continued their careers in professional baseball. Our Dugout Club and Alumni
continue to help us build on this great Bulldog tradition.
The classroom continues to be a key essential to our success on the field. We are
proud of the effort that each young man puts into his studies, as well as his efforts
on the field. For the sixth consecutive year our athletes have turned in a team GPA
above a 3.0. In addition we also had 16 players named Academic All–MWC for the
2015 season: Manny Argomaniz, Korby Batesole, Tim Borst, Austin Guibor,
Jimmy Lambert, Dylan Lee, Jesse Medrano, Garrett Mundell, William Munro,
Joe Prior, Rickey Ramirez, Mark Reece, Casey Rodriguez, Brody Russel, Jake
Stone and Taylor Tempel. We also had four athletes who were selected as a
Mountain West Scholar-Athlete: Austin Guibor, William Munro, Rickey Ramirez
and Mark Reece. As a program, we continue to emphasize players earning their
degrees. We could not be more proud of the outstanding work our student-athletes
have done in the classroom. We thank the Dugout Club and Alumni for their
efforts to support our program and give us the opportunity to recruit student-
athletes who will not only win Championships on the field, but be outstanding
students as well.
Bulldog Baseball is happy to be a part of this community as well. Bulldog players
and coaches have participated in numerous community service events throughout
the Valley. This semester, as a team we have volunteered at the Clovis Walk to End
Alzheimer’s, Team Smile, Breast Cancer Telethon, Fresno State Softball and
Baseball Clinic, and the Big Heroes-Little Heroes Program to name a few.
Looking ahead to 2016 we are excited to play our fourth season in the
Mountain West Conference. We expect our pre-season schedule to prepare us for
the challenge. Our non-conference schedule is highlighted by an opening weekend
series at home against Creighton, followed by a single game with Oakland, and
a weekend series with Youngstown State. Also coming to Beiden Field for single
game contests will be CSU Bakersfield, Oklahoma, Long Beach State, Sacramentod

2. families. The opportunity for coaches, players and their parents to socialize and
experience the Fresno State family atmosphere makes this one of our best events.
Marsha Johnson, our special events chair, teamed up with Sharlene Gomes and
together with their army of volunteers organized a BBQ that served nearly 200
people.
Meanwhile, the executive officers and board have been meeting with head coach Mike
Batesole at bi-monthly breakfast meetings, helping us learn about the program’s needs
and working together to accomplish them. We also met with the Fresno State Facilities
crew to gain a better understanding of their operations and where our role fits to assist
them. I’m happy to report that we worked with the University to improve the lighting
in the hitting barn and finally gave the players a safer, more accurate environment to
practice in. We also assisted with the installation of new banners in the barn and
locker room that depict the history and great players this program has produced. The
University also provided a new utility vehicle and golf cart for the baseball team.
In the coming weeks we will work to replace the bullpen chain link windows with
plexiglass so that the players can actually watch the game in progress. We’ll also be
replacing the worn-out dugout floor with new, rubberized material for a much-needed
overhaul.
All these efforts have been accomplished by working together as a team with the
coaches, Bulldog Foundation, University and alumni. I invite all of you to be part of
our team by joining the Dugout Club and help us continue our tradition of service to
Bulldog Baseball. Part of our mission is to enhance the fan experience, and if you’re
willing to volunteer your time, whether at the golf tournament, Double Play Dinner,
auctions, brunches or team meals, we promise you will appreciate Bulldog Baseball
at a whole new level. If you’re interested, the contact information for each event is
available in this issue.
I’d also like to take the opportunity to introduce our two student volunteers for the
Club. From the Department of Mass Communications and Journalism, we welcome
Kelly Aoki and Johnny Martin. Both will bring their exceptional talents to assist the
Dugout Club as our directors of publications and social media. I’ve been the editor
of Baselines for nearly twenty years, but moving up the ladder as president no longer
allows me the time to continue, so I’m happy to give two outstanding students the
opportunity to gain valuable experience in their chosen fields.
I hope all of you had a wonderful holiday season and are making plans to join us at
our Annual Golf Classic at Eagle Springs on Friday, February 12, and later that
evening at the Double Play Dinner at the Clovis Veterans Memorial Hall.

State, Pacific, St. Mary’s and Cal Poly. The MW Baseball schedule will
include San Diego State, UNLV, San Jose State, Air Force Academy, New
Mexico and UNR.
Assistant Coaches Steve Rousey and Ryan Overland will return for the
2016 season. We have also welcomed JJ Mascolo to our coaching staff as
our Volunteer Assistant Coach. JJ brings a wealth of baseball
knowledge to our staff after spending last year at Western Oregon
University. At WOU, JJ served as an assistant while working with
outfielders and assisting with the hitters. Also coming back to Beiden
Field to be our Undergraduate Assistant Coach is Kody Batesole. Kody
brings Bulldog pride and baseball knowledge to the clubhouse as he
will be assisting with the infielders and be our 1st base coach during the
season.

The support of the Dugout Club and Alumni helps our Baseball
Program win on the field and in the classroom. Your efforts help support
student-athlete success, improve our facility, and create a fan base unlike
any other in the country. It is this support that makes Fresno State
Baseball not only a premier program, but a special place in the eyes of
our current players. We thank all Dugout Club members and Alumni for
their support and ask you to renew your membership and your season
tickets for 2016.
Thank you!

“People ask me what I do in
winter when there’s no baseball. I’ll tell you what
I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring”.
- Rogers Hornsby
While your Dugout Club is anxiously looking forward to
spring and the 2016 Bulldog Baseball season, we are not
sitting idly by and waiting. The Board has been busy
preparing for the upcoming year and planning for our
kick-off events.
Fall ushered in the new Bulldog team as they began practice
for the 2016 season. The Dugout Club continued our
tradition of service by providing team meals after
Thursday night practices. It’s no small feat to arrange these
meals and Ginger Hazel does an excellent job
coordinating the catering and volunteer crews to serve the
players. Besides providing great food for the team, it also
serves as a team-bonding experience and gives the
volunteers the opportunity to meet the players. This team
has a special chemistry that promises to excite the fans this
season, as well.
But our work didn’t end there. On Saturday October 3, we
hosted the popular Welcome BBQ for the players and their

The annual event to introduce the new team is being held February 12,
2016 at the Clovis Veterans Memorial Hall. Once again, the dinner is
prepared and served by Pardini’s Catering of Fresno which always does
a special job for the Dugout Club. Doors will open at 6 and the silent
auction will be held at that time until dinner at 7:30.
The auction always impresses with a wide and exciting array of offerings
from locally grown produce, exceptional wines and baseball memorabilia,
jewelry and wearables. A dessert auction table makes the perfect stop for
choices for that sweet tooth.
Additionally, attendees are given the opportunity to buy raffle tickets from
the 2016 team who will be wearing their uniform jerseys. A
numbered list will help guests identify the players.
A special live auction is held periodically throughout the dinner offering a
few unique and specially selected items.
A silent auction will be held again at this year’s annual Double Play Dinner. The Dugout Club hopes the dinner and the silent
auction will start the season with a walk-off homer in the ninth kind of splash. In order to make that happen we need your help.
The Dugout Club is still in need of some auction items, items that can be anything from gift certificates to gift baskets to sports
memorabilia, anything you see fit for the live or silent auction. Some of the live auction gifts already on hand are the “Ultimate Fan
Package” (food, tickets, throwing out a first pitch and many more surprises) and a stool in the Dugout Club area down the third
base line.
A key feature recently added to the dinner is the “feature tables” which include a wine table, dessert table, “Pride of the Valley”
table and lots of gift certificates that include dinners and some golf. We could always use some help gathering items and ideas for
other tables for this year’s dinner.
Arrangements can be made to pick up your donations by contacting Joyce @ (559) 434-5714 or Kristi @ (559) 638-5529 or by
email at: krisrod@verizon.net. We welcome volunteer help as well, if you’d like to lend a hand please call or contact any Dugout
Club board member.
If you are unable to donate or help you are always welcome to attend the dinner and maybe you can leave with some of the great
items up for auction. We hope to see you there and at Beiden Field come February. Go Dogs!
The 2016 team will be introduced. The new players usually present
themselves in an entertaining way and the returners remind everyone
who they are. Off the field and out of uniform shows everyone what they
look like without the hats.
Paul Loeffler will direct the evening’s events with his usual talent. You
can also hear Paul on the radio broadcasts of the games on ESPN 940
KFIG (available on Tune-In app out of the area).
Reservations are due by Feb 7th. Last minute additions and changes will
be accommodated if possible.
Questions and requests for invitations should be directed to: Sharlene
Gomes by text or calling (559) 269-9115 or email sharlenegomes@gmail.

The 2016 Fresno State Bulldogs will get their 56-game schedule
underway on Friday, February 19 when they host Big East opponent
Creighton at Beiden Field for a three-game series. In total, the ‘Dogs will
host 33 games against 16 different teams and will play 23 games on the
road against 11 different opponents.
In addition to its five three-game series against Mountain West
opponents at Beiden Field, the ‘Dogs will also host opponents from the
Big East, Horizon, WAC, Big 12, Big West and West Coast conferences.
“Our 2016 schedule is solid,” said Batesole. “It gives us an opportunity
to have an outstanding RPI and strength of schedule, which are two key
components in the eyes of the NCAA Committee. Of course the most
important elements are the Mountain West Conference games and those
are the games we need large crowds at Beiden Field! In all, our 2016
schedule sets us up, so that if we win enough games, we can host an
NCAA Regional.”
After opening against the Blue Jays, the ‘Dogs take on Horizon league
members Oakland (Mich.) for a midweek game (Feb. 23) and then play a
four-game series with Youngstown State before wrapping up their
season-opening nine-game homestand with CSU Bakersfield on Mar. 1.
Fresno State hits the road for its next seven games, their longest road
stretch of the season, opening conference play with a three-game
Fresno State Baseball lost a great friend with the passing of Herbert “Herb” Fung on
Wednesday, July 22, 2015. Bulldog fans and friends will always remember him as a sweet,
opinionated, supportive, caring and fun person.
Herb and his beloved wife Mary were fanatical supporters of Fresno State baseball, and
he was often seen delivering Mary’s cookies to the locker room before games. He loved
Bulldog baseball, celebrating their wins and mourning their losses with equal passion.
Herb and Mary traveled often to distant games, including the 2008 College World Series
in Omaha. At his passing, Herb’s family included the Dugout Club in remembrances and
nearly $3,000 has been donated in his memory.
An astute businessman, Herb founded Westwood Pharmacy and built its success through
his strong work ethic, often working 100 hours per week. It was a successful business that
lasted nearly 30 years until he retired in 1994. He provided numerous jobs for students,
family and friends. Westwood is where his ‘American Dream’ came true, where he and
Mary raised their family, built longstanding friendships within the community, and created
many incredible memories.
A loving grandpa and dad, devoted husband, loyal and trustworthy friend, Herb Fung will
always be our beloved Bulldog fan and be missed and remembered by all whose lives he
touched.
Special Thanks to Sharlene Gomes.
