The five level of process support through augmented reality serve as basis for generation of new AR/MR applications and help to classify already implemented use cases

Aguila´s five level of process support through augmented reality
1. Aguila's five level of process support through
augmented reality
KEVIN ELIGIO AGUILA – 16.05.2017
2. KEVIN ELIGIO AGUILA
Junior Engineer – IoT & Industrie 4.0
Personal Profile
Ambitious German engineer with advanced knowledge in
Industrie 4.0
initial professional experience in the automotive sector
through internships and part-time jobs
proven ability to combine strategy with organizational
change and people
entrepreneurial thinking
Career Objective
My main effort aims at strongly contributing towards acceleration of Industrie 4.0 initiatives through
generation of new business models as well as digitalization and integration of vertical and
horizontal value chains

Level 5
4. Level 1 - Mere visualization of Data
Example
In close collaboration between Festo
Polymer GmbH and Centigrade GmbH
Microsoft’s HoloLens was utilized to
display all manufacturing related
information to shift foreman. More
precisely the basic idea is to monitor
the production without the use of a
notebook, tablet or smartphone by
overlooking the factory hall from an
observation platform. Here a gaze at
one of the machines open a window
in the shift foreman’s field of view in
which the current status is displayed.DeepSight project - Festo Polymer GmbH
(Centigrade GmbH, 2017)
5. Level 2 - Active human-computer interaction
Example
Mixed reality can be beneficially
applied to ascertain geometrical
dimensions of products. In the shown
example, the workperson measures
the size of an electric engine with the
HoloLens in order to identify a
corresponding packaging. In this way,
the optimal packaging can be found
without using a tapeline.

6. Level 3 - Real-time data dissemination
Example
Microsoft’s HoloLens enables to
communicate data of the current
process without taking safety gloves
off. Therefor checklists as well as input
windows to document for instance
mixing proportion are displayed in
workperson’s field of view. Furthermore,
displayed operating instructions ensure
an ergonomically way of working. An
additional advantage is the immediate
transfer of information in real time
without a time-consuming walk to the
next manufacturing terminal.

(YAVEON Enterprise Solutions GmbH, 2016)
7. Level 4 - Active decision support
Example
The use of head-mounted displays in
order to navigate through warehouse.
Here a permanent location tracking
allows to compute the shortest way to
searched storage areas. Withal arrows
show the route in the worker’s field of
view. That way order picking mistakes
as well as incorrect routes can be
prevented by decreasing complexity
at the same time.

8. Level 5 - Flexible personnel placement
Example
Another promising field of application
for augmented reality relates to
maintenance processes of machines.
For one, head-mounted displays are
hands-free media which allow the
operator to have information in front of
his eyes while maintaining the machine
at the same time. But additionally, the
operator’s comprehension can be
ensured by virtualizing important
operating instructions. In this relation a
flexible personnel placement can be
also practiced, because experts can
be contacted and displayed in the
field of view or head-mounted displays
completely replace service technicians
