The document discusses the key elements of art including line, shape, form, space, and others. It explains that elements are the basic building blocks used by artists to create works of art. Lines can suggest various effects and when lines intersect they can form shapes. Shapes can be geometric or organic. Forms are three-dimensional shapes that express length, width and depth. Space refers to the area between objects and the feeling of depth in a work of art. The document provides examples and definitions of the core visual elements to help analyze and understand how they are used in artwork.
2. PRINCIPLES OF ARTS WORK TOGETHER TO CREATE AN ARTWORK
The first way to think about a principle is that it is something that can be repeatedly and
dependably done with elements to produce some sort of visual effect in a composition.
The principles are based on sensory responses to visual input: elements APPEAR to have
visual weight, movement, etc. The principles help govern what might occur when
elements are arranged in a particular way. Using a chemistry analogy, the principles are the
ways the elements “stick together” to make a “chemical” (in our case, an image).
The principles of design help you to carefully plan and organize the elements of art so that
you will hold interest and command attention. This is sometimes referred to as visual
In any work of art there is a thought process for the arrangement and use of the elements
design. The artist who works with the principles of good composition will create a more
interesting piece; it will be arranged to show a pleasing rhythm and movement. The center
of interest will be strong and the viewer will not look away, instead, they will be drawn into
the work. A good knowledge of composition is essential in producing good artwork
3. The Visual Elements are Line - Shape - Tone - Color - Pattern - Texture - Form.
They are the building blocks of composition in art. When we analyze any drawing,
painting, sculpture or design, we examine these component parts to see how they
combine to create the overall effect of the artwork.
The Visual Elements have a relationship to one another:
Most images begin their life as line drawings.
Lines cross over one another to form shapes.
Shapes can be filled with tone and color, or repeated to create pattern.
A shape may be rendered with a rough surface to create a texture.
A shape may be projected into three dimensions to create form.
4. ELEMENTS OF ART
Elements of art are stylistic features that are included
within an art piece to help the artist communicate. The
seven most common elements include LINE, SHAPE,
TEXTURE, FORM, SPACE, COLOUR AND VALUE.

5. LINE
-Path of a dot through space
- A set of points moving in space
-A mark with greater length than width.
Line is the foundation of all drawing. It is
the first and most versatile of the visual
elements of art. Line in an artwork can
be used in many different ways. It can be
used to suggest shape, pattern, form,
structure, growth, depth, distance,
rhythm, movement and a range of
emotions.

SHAPE is a closed line. Shapes can be geometric, like squares and
circles; or organic, like free-form or natural shapes. Shapes are flat
and can express length and width
10. SPACE is the area between and around objects. The space around objects is often
called negative space; negative space has shape. Space can also refer to the
feeling of depth. Real space is three-dimensional; in visual art, when we create
the feeling or illusion of depth, we call it space.
