3. Donating blood is an important part of global healthcare. It concerns blood transfusions as life-supporting and life-saving
procedures and forms of therapeutic phlebotomy as major medical interventions. More than 100 million units of blood are
donated each year worldwide. Blood donation and transfusion are life-saving procedures
World Blood Donor Day is celebrated on June 14th each year. This day was created to: Raise global awareness of the need for safe
blood and blood products for transfusion
Currently, the Egyptian blood donor rate is only about 1% of the total population, far below the normal blood donor rate. The normal
donor rate is the 2-3% needed to supply enough blood from Egyptian blood donations alone
People know very little about donating blood and have the wrong attitude towards donating blood
Therefore, this study is important because it aims to improving blood donation, discover current barriers, assess the awareness and
perceptions of, knowledge and misconceptions about, and motivations for blood donation, as well as reasons for not donating blood,
among a sample of Port Said University students.
4. Aim
Identifying the factors that
contribute to the
willingness to donate
blood among
the students of port said,
Egypt
Objectives
1 To identify factors which
may prevent students from
blood donation.
2. To evaluate students’
awareness and attitude
towards blood donation.
3. To assess the
relationship between
socioeconomic background
and perceptions on blood
donations.
5. Study design and study population
descriptive cross-sectional study was
conducted among students at Port Said
University
sampling procedure
Students were recruited non-
randomly using a convenience
sampling method
Subjects
the study included 745 students, to participate in the study. A total of 112 students
were unwilling to participate, leaving 633 students eligible for the study, with a
response rate of 84.9%.
6. Data collection
The questionnaire used in this study
is an online self-administered
questionnaire Microsoft forms online
software
Data Analysis
Results of the questionnaire were
extracted using Excel and then
imported and analyzed using SPSS
version 26
Questionnaire
The constructed questionnaire consists of four sections, with a total of 39 questions, of
which four are open ended questions
part A :sociodemographic Information and Items Associated with Blood Donation Status
part B : Motivators to Donate Blood
Part C: Barriers to Donate Blood
Part D: Knowledge Assessment on Blood Donation
7. The majority of the respondents were
males (52 %), and only (48 %) were
female.
Among the respondents, 135 (21.3%) had donated
blood at least once in their lifetime and 498 were
non-blood donors.
8. More males than females are likely to donate
blood (71.1% vs. 28.9%) and this proportion
difference is statistically significant.the
majority of age groups between 20-21 years in
both genders were more likely to donate blood
(48.9%), compared to the other age groups.
9.
10. method of selection of the sample is convenience method and regarding data collection, which is collected through online self-
administrated questionnaire using Microsoft form.
Questionnaire Form consists 5 sections of questions about sociodemographic information, motivators and barriers to donate
blood, knowledge assessment and ways to promote blood donation.
Questionnaire are responded by 745 students containing 112 incomplete responses so they were excluded, this resulted in a total
633 complete responses (84.9%).
the results revealed that majority of participants were male (52%) and female (48%).
Analyzed data showed that the donors were 135 out of total 633 (21%) .
our study revealed that majority of donors in age group between 21-22 (48.9%) .
The blood donors had a higher mean knowledge score (M = 56.3%, SD = 19.8) than the non– blood donors (M = 47.4%, SD = 20) .
11. In addition, The most common motivators reported by blood donors are donating to help patients
(68.1% strongly agree, 26.7% agree).
Also analyzed data helped us to know barriers of blood donation, that showed that the most common
barriers reported by non-blood donors are failing to meet the requirements (18.5% strongly agree, 27.2%
agree).
Analyzed data revealed that the most effective ways of promoting blood donation selected by all the
participants are raising the awareness of blood donation (79.6%), followed by increasing blood donation
sites (54.7%), and provide mobile blood donation system (51.8%). Most of the participants agreed that
developing a mobile application would help in promoting blood donation (43% strongly agree, 46% agree) .
12. • assessing the knowledge level of both blood donors and non-blood donors and understanding the motives and barriers for
blood donation is critical to develop effective strategies to recruit more donors to meet the clinical need.
• Interestingly, the current study revealed that knowledge level was not associated with donation status.
• Altruism and the presence of mobile donation units were the main motivators for donating blood among blood donors.
• These findings suggest that raising the awareness about blood donation among young adults in Port Said may increase blood
donation frequency. Future work could focus on younger age groups to understand more about their motivation.
• More efforts should be put into using social media and influencers to raise blood donation awareness, as the survey found that
participants had already heard about blood donation through these methods. Therefore, further consideration and research
are needed to attract future donors.
13. •These findings suggest that there is a potential for increasing blood donation rates in Port Said by raising awareness of the
provision of blood to those aged between 18 and 35
•To gain a better understanding of their motivation, future work could concentrate on the younger age groups
•In view of the fact that this survey revealed that participants had already heard about blood donation via these methods,
more efforts should be taken to use social media and Influencers in order to increase Blood Donation Awareness
•To attract future donors, further consideration should be given and research carried out
