2. PURPOSIVE COMMUNICATION’S COURSE OUTLINE
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Purposive communication is a three-unit course on writing, speaking, and presenting to
different audiences and for various purposes. It is aimed at developing students’
communicative competence and enhances their cultural and intercultural awareness through
multimodal tasks that provide them opportunities for communicating effectively and
appropriately to a multicultural audience in a local or global context. It equips student with
tools for critical evaluation of a variety of texts and focuses on the power of language and the
impact of mages to emphasize the importance of conveying a message responsibly. The
knowledge, skills, and insights that students gain from this course may be used in their other
academic endeavors, their chosen disciplines, and either future career as they compose and
produce relevant oral, written, audio-visual and/or web-based output for various purposes.
3. COURSE INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES
Within the semester, you are expected to:
1. Describe the nature, elements, and functions of verbal and non-verbal communication in various
multicultural contexts/ demonstrate a deeper grasp of communication by accounting for what is embodied
and circumvented in an effective and responsible communication in various multicultural contexts;
2. Evaluate multimodal texts critically to enhance receptive (listening, reading, and viewing) skills;
3. Convey ideas through oral, audio-visual, and/or web-based presentations for different target audiences in
local and global settings appropriate registers;
4. Present ideas persuasively using appropriate language registers, tone, facial expressions, and gestures;
and
5. Adopt cultural and intercultural awareness and sensitivity in communication of ideas.

• Web-based awareness campaign for safety to eliminate fatal accidents in the
engineering/tourism/IT industry

CLASS CONFERENCING
Check your connectivity and virtual set-up at
all times.
Come to the virtual class on time.
Wear decent clothes/attire in front of the
camera;
Use the raise hand button when you want to
say or ask something during virtual class
discussions.
Set your audio on mute when you are not
speaking.
Ensure contents are utilized exclusively in
this class.
