  2. 2. One Recommendation from Regain Your Balance Ataxia Solutions from The Nerve Whisperer Find Health and Healingin Six Complementary & Alternative Medicine Arenas $ 2.99 on Amazon.com http://www.amazon.com/Kimberly- Burnham/e/B0054RZ4A0If you follow one recommendation or do one exercise fromthis book, the most promising one comes from the sixtharena: nutrition. Eliminate gluten, the protein in wheat, barley and rye from your diet. You might be saying but I feelfine when I eat bread or pizza and that may be true of yourdigestive system but in some people gluten sensitivitydoesnt contribute to digestive problems but rather it affectsthe nervous system contributing to loss of balance andataxias. This book is a mix of medical referenced material for thosewho want to see what medical science is saying about hopeand the healing potential of ataxia or a loss of balance. Thereare also step by step self-care exercises that can change yourquality of life. you may decide to skip all the explanationsand just read and do the exercise component, that isperfectly fine. Each exercise and to-do-section is clearlylabeled for you.
  3. 3. Can the brain and spinal cord regenerate afterinjury or disease?Twenty years ago, neurologists were saying the brain, thespinal cord can‟t heal or regenerate. Today when you ask aneurologist who is reading their own medical literature theanswer is “yes, under certain circumstances.” This book isabout those circumstances. It is about what needs to changeso that you get a difference outcome that what you havebeen getting. This book is a road map for anyone who wants to develop abetter functioning nervous system, whether they are under alittle too much stress leading to imbalances or have beenrecently diagnosed with Huntingtons ataxia or cerebellarataxia or had a spinal cord injury twenty years ago. This isdesigned for anyone who finds themselves unsteady andfalling, losing their balance, or with a serious diagnosis likeFriedreichs ataxia or some other inherited balance issue. This book is designed to help you regain your balance bothphysical steadiness on your feet and smooth musclemovements as well as find the balance to live a morefulfilling, creative life. There are easy exercises, self-carerecommendations and scientific / medical research snippets.some of the exercises are based on the concept of using themind to heal the brain and explore the relationship betweenwhat you think and perceive and how that changes thephysical substrate of the brain and nervous system.
  4. 4. ExercisesThe exercises are designed to help you if you are strugglingwith walking and balance, speech and articulation issues, joint pain, sensory loss, depression, nerve pain or sensoryneuropathy. These exercises will also benefit you if you justwant to feel and function better and find new ways toimprove your nervous system as you age. This book is for you if you have been diagnosed withCerebellar Ataxia, Huntingtons Disease (a geneticmovement disorder), X-linked spinal and bulbar muscularatrophy (Kennedy disease), Friedreichs ataxia andmitochondrial diseases, Spinocerebellar Ataxia, Charcot-Marie Tooth, Dentatorubro-pallidoluysian atrophy(DRPLA), Inherited prion disease, Neuroacanthocytosis,Brain iron accumulation disorders, Benign hereditarychorea, Agenesis of the Corpus Callosum, focal dystonia(unusually tight twisted muscles), Parkinsons disease(tremor movement disorder), and Wilsons disease (geneticcopper processing disorder), Ataxia with isolated vitamin Edeficiency (AVED), Ataxia Telangiectasia, Cayman ataxia,Ataxia with oculomotor apraxia. There is also help for you if you have Acquired Chorea due tovascular disease, post-infective autoimmune central nervoussystem disorders (PANDAS), drugs, systemic lupuserythematosus, antiphospholipid syndrome, thyrotoxicosis,AIDS, chorea gravidarum, and polycythaemia rubra vera. This book includes unique exercises like the fractal visionexercises, disgust exercises for better balance (using themind to heal the brain) and homeopathic visualizations.
  5. 5. Enriched Environments and Brain PlasticityExercise: Look around your living and working space. Is itinteresting? Does it change? Are their puzzles and activities to engageand challenge your brain? Change something every day. Design yourspace with color, variety, and interest in mind. This is what is knownas an enriched environment, as opposed to boring and monotonous.Behavioral, cellular and molecular studies have revealed significanteffects of enriched environments on rodents and other species, andprovided new insights into mechanisms of experience-dependentplasticity, including adult neurogenesis [brain development] andsynaptic plasticity [adaptable brain connections]. The onset andprogression of Huntingtons disease in transgenic mice is delayed byenvironmental enrichment has emphasized the importance ofunderstanding both genetic and environmental factors in nervoussystem disorders, including those with Mendelian inheritancepatterns.A range of rodent models of other brain disorders, includingAlzheimers disease and Parkinsons disease, fragile X and Downsyndrome, as well as various forms of brain injury, have now beencompared under enriched and standard housing conditions. -Nithianantharajah, J. and A. J. Hannan (2006). "Enrichedenvironments, experience-dependent plasticity and disorders of thenervous system." Nat Rev Neurosci 7(9): 697-709.Recent studies have reported abnormalities in short-term plasticityin patients with Huntingtons disease (HD). "Our results demonstrateimpairment of both cortical and brainstem LTP-like plasticity insymptomatic HD patients which is similar to LTP deficits previouslyreported in HD animal models. These findings might well representthe neurophysiological correlates of memory deficits often present inHD. " - Crupi, D., M. F. Ghilardi, et al. (2008). "Cortical andbrainstem LTP-like plasticity in Huntingtons disease." Brain ResBull 75(1): 107-114.In other words, brain plasticity is affected in brain disorders andthere are things you can do like look at your environment that canimprove brain plasticity or the ability of your brain to heal and adapt.
  6. 6. What does the nervous system need to function and heal? The brain and spinal cord need nutrients and building blocks for thedevelopment and recovery process. The nervous system also needs space- the space within which to glidewith the movements of the body and send a flow of nervous systemimpulses along an unfettered pathway.Nerve need a clean environment, free of toxins, waste products andexcess fluid or swelling. This book is about simple, easy self-care approaches to providing thenervous system with what it needs to develop and heal. Here we willalso explore different modalities from the field of IntegrativeMedicine or Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) thatare developing more and more research and proof of benefits to thenervous system How can we communicate with our nervous system? This book will also explore ways to understand what our nervoussystem is saying to us and how to send messages to our consciousbrain, subconscious mind and autonomic nervous system, all ofwhich have important messages for us and are very much concernedabout our health and well being. With this book you can become “TheNerve Whisperer” for your very own nervous system and support andunderstand those around you better as well.
  7. 7. What is acute pain telling me?Acute pain or sudden pain is protective. The pain of stepping on atack, tells us to lift our foot. The burning pain of touching a hot stovetells us with draw our hand. The pain ensures that we will be morecareful next time. It ensures that we learn how to navigate ourenvironment safely. There are a few people who have no pain receptors and while thissounds like a pleasant thing, they often die at a young age becausetheir warning system is off. They don‟t realize that their foot isinfected or that they have a bleeding cut. They are trying to navigatethe world without the benefit of a warning system. What is the benefit of chronic pain?Chronic pain - long lasting pain with no ongoing tissue damage - onthe other hand is not telling us of dangerous situations where damageis currently being inflicted on the tissue. Chronic pain tells us thatthere is too much stress on the tissue and not enough of the thingsneeded for nerve and tissue healing and recovery. The solution tochronic pain is finding ways to increase nutrients going to the tissues, decrease toxins in the tissues, relax muscles and improve the amountof space available to the nerve, joints, muscles, tendons, ligamentsand muscles to do their job. Here we will discuss the evidence and reports of the benefits ofnutritional programs (vitamin E, CoQ10, Vitamin B12), glutenelimination, reflexology, massage, Integrative Manual Therapy,Alexander Technique, Acupuncture, physical therapy, occupationaltherapy and exercise. These approaches improve quality of life andthe overall symptom pictures in people with ataxia. In an extensive article on the genetics, protein folding dysfunctions, and characteristics of inherited ataxias, researchers said, “at present, limited therapeutic approaches are available for a few recessiveataxias, including vitamin E supplementation in Ataxia with isolatedvitamin E deficiency (AVED) and administration of coenzyme Qderivatives for Friedreich ataxia (FRDA) cardiomyopathy.
  8. 8. The development of biological markers that can detect the diseaseprocess before the patient becomes sick must be a research priority.”-DeKosky, S. T. and K. Marek (2003). "Looking backward to moveforward: early detection of neurodegenerative disorders." Science302(5646): 830-4.DiDonato, S. 10. 10. About the Author: Kimberly Burnham Who Do I Help? What do I do?Millions of people have lost their sensory connection with the naturalworld. I use my training, a PhD in Integrative Medicine andcertifications in Integrative Manual Therapy, Matrix Energetics andHealth Coaching to help improve the function of your nervoussystem. There is healing in just noticing the branching fractal patterns intrees and other parts of the natural world. Recognizing the patterncan decrease stress and anxiety and restores balance.More than nine million Americans over the age of 40 have maculardegeneration. They are losing their vision, their ability to watchtransformational movies, to read inspirational books like ChristineKlosers Pebbles in the Pond and to drive safely. Their world isgetting smaller. The purpose of my chapter in Pebbles in the Pond: The EyesObserving Your World is to demonstrate that you can improve youreyesight, vision and perspective as you get older. In my own personal story, at 28, I was working as a professionalphotographer and then found myself in an ophthalmologists office. In his white coat with his degrees hanging on the wall he told me Ihave keratoconus, which affects the cornea. "Kim, it is genetic sothere is nothing you can do about it. You need to consider how yourlife will go if you become blind.“
  11. 11. That day guided to me into massage school, a profession where youdont need to be able to see and that lead to a PhD in IntegrativeMedicine focused on brain health, especially Parkinsons disease.I have found solutions for myself and today at 55 my vision is betterthan when I was 28. My goal is to change the face of vision disorders, genetic issues and neurodegenerative conditions. No one can tell methat complementary and alternative medicine doesnt offer solutions, strategies and hope. I know in my body and in my eyes that I canheal. I know from my clients experiences that all of us can improvethe quality of our lives after a devastating genetic diagnosis, diseaseprocess or a serious injury. In 2012 I started training for a Cross-USA bicycle ride with Hazon, anorganization which promotes sustainable agriculture and foodjustice. Summer 2013 I will be bicycling 3300 miles across thisbeautiful country. To find out more or follow my progress see my blog athttp://blog.thatintersectionpoint.com andhttp://visualizehealth.net/SustainableAgriculture.phpI am the author of Our Fractal Nature and Journey of Self-Discoveryand Connection, as well as the upcoming book, The Nerve Whisperer,Recover Your Life Through Brain Health. Featured with otherthought leaders in two books, Jack Canfields Pearls of Wisdom, 30Inspirational Ideas to Live Your Best Life Now! (April 2, 2012) mychapter, "Fractals: Seeing the Patterns in Our Existence", offers aunique perspective on life patterns and how we can improve ourbrain health and memory by observing while seeking to understandthe world around us."The Eyes Observing Your World", in ChristineKlosers Pebbles in the Pond: Transforming the World One Person ata Time (May 20, 2012) tells a remarkable story of vision recoveryoffering hope for anyone with a potentially blinding condition, migraines, or immune dysfunction. I have used complementary and alternativemedicine (CAM) approaches to improve my vision, eliminate amovement disorders and the migraines I had for 10 plus years as wellas become symptom-free despite a genetic condition. Some people will say they don‟t have enough time or money or thatthere is no cure and they will lose out on the success that so manypeople have already experienced. It is a different world today, different from a generation ago whenWoody Guthrie was diagnosed with Huntington‟s or Michael J Foxwas diagnosed with Parkinson‟s. Today there are people who areseeing improvements in their quality of life as they age, regardless oftheir diagnoses. Here we will review the stories and experiences of regular peoplewith devastating diagnosis, as well as what complementary medicinepractitioners are doing to help people feel better and function better. We will also most importantly teach you fast and easy things to doyourself that will have life changing effects on your quality of life.
  14. 14. If you are like most people, what you want can be simplified into sixcategories: space, movement, clarity, energy, experience, freedom.Time and money, which most people would say they want fall intothese six categories. Time is really the energy and clarity to gain theexperience you want. Money is not the goal but rather the desire for acertain experience of life and the freedom to do what you want. Canyou think of anything you want that doesnt fit into these sixcategories?Let me know on Facebook. There is also weekly free health coachingsessions at The Nerve Whisperer Facebook Fan page. Do you want more space?1) You want a comfortable space. This entails having space, space tolive, to sleep, to work, to enjoy, to communicate, to move. To love. Itentails having a space that you feel good in. Your nervous system alsowants space, space to flexibly move, space from which to getnutrients and get rid of waste products, space to function and getinformation. More than anything else a pinched nerve want acomfortable space. It wants the space around it to be flexible, to belight, to touch it in a healthy and adaptable way.Movement 2) You want to be able to move through time and space.Moving through time and space is important for us at a whole humanbeing level, as well as at the level of systems in the body on down tothe atomic level. Your atoms are in constant motion as long as youare alive. You are never completely still. All of that movement createsinformation, information about internal processes and externalprocesses in your environment. Your nervous system uses thisinformation to move you closer to certain things and away from otherthings. A breakdown in the ability to move and voluntarily controlwhat you do and dont want to do is at the root of many nervoussystem disorders.
  15. 15. Clarity 3) You want clarity, the ability to think clearly, make goodchoices for yourself, be productive, be creative and learn from yourexperiences. So many nervous system problems are a result of a lackin this area.Energy 4) Many people say I wish I had more time, but is it reallytime they want or the clarity to be productive in the time they haveand the energy to do the things they want to do? Energy is vital to thenervous system. Nutrients and oxygen are converted into energy bythe mitochondria, the little power stations in your cells. Thesebuilding blocks of your structure and fuel for energy productiongiving your nervous system the ability to function well have to firstcome into your body, pass through the membranes in your lungs anddigestive system, go into the blood stream, be sorted and packaged(often in the liver) and then delivered to the cells for building, healingand energy production. Each step along the way is important.Experience 5) Sometimes people say I want more money, or I needmore money but really what are they looking for? You want a certainexperience of life or certain sensations - a beautiful place to live, theluxury of waking up with the sun streaming in the window and beingable to lay there and enjoy it, the ability to travel and see the EiffelTower or the Pyramids, or chose to read a book or garden or takeyour kids somewhere fun. Most of the time it is not really money thatwe want, it is what money will get us in terms of the experiences wewant to have. You nervous system has no need of money but it doesneed resources in order to create the energy, clarity and movement tomake it possible for you to accomplish your dreams. Many peoplealso say they want love, to be loved, to be appreciated, to berecognized. These are all emotional states that we wish to experience. We want to have the experience, the feeling. We want to experiencesuccess.Freedom 6) Another thing most people want is freedom andindependence. You want to have a choice and you want to be able todo what you want. Your nervous system has to have enough space, information, and energy in order to enable you to have choices andthe independence you want.
  16. 16. Surprising Results: One Womans Story of The Genetics of Hope andRecovery"Sometimes I forget that I was diagnosed with Huntington„s diseasealmost a year ago. Sometimes I wonder why people are talking to meas if I have a scary, life altering disease, until I remember the day inthe neurologist‟s office with my husband, when I got the news. Thegenetic neurologist, a 40 something, nice enough looking woman, painted the bleakest possible picture of my next 10-20 years. Thepicture of the progression of the disease I have been labeled withbriefly sucked the life out of my dreams and hopes. She spoke to meas if recovery of quality of life after a diagnosis of Huntington‟sdisease is impossible. She spoke the curses as if there is no possibilitythat tomorrow, someone might find a cure and brighten the outlookfor the more than a quarter of a million people worldwide withHuntington‟s disease or at risk of developing the disease. Shepredicted MY future without knowing my inner strength, resourcesand drive.Fortunately a month or so before that day, I met Kimberly Burnham,a PhD in Integrative Medicine with a unique take on health andhealing and the world in general. After only eight hours of treatmentover a couple of months, my outlook on the future was back to apositive, hopeful level. When I began seeing Kim for treatment of myataxia (lose of balance, dizziness and pressure at the back of myhead), those symptoms were interfering with my life on a 24/7 basis.I also had other symptoms including uncontrolled movement of myfeet, fingers, shallow/irregular breathing and face twitching. Athome, chores such as washing dishes, cleaning, and grocery shoppinghad to be broken down into tiny tasks in order for me to accomplishthem. My dizziness caused me to rest my head against the back of thesofa or chair frequently.During my first manual therapy session Kim stressed the fact that shewould be treating me and not the ataxia symptoms or Huntington‟ssymptoms. As soon as I made my first call to her office, she became atrue partner in my physical and emotional healing. After just the firstsession, I was able to sit straight for hours at a time, without restingmy head. After the first couple of sessions, my mom and husbandnoted that I was articulating my words better including on the phone.
  17. 17. Other symptoms that disappeared according to my husband, were theface twitches and difficulty picking up things from the table such as aglasses. He also noticed me just getting around easier. My measure ofthis is the fact that I can now clean the entire apartment in one day.The ability to do other things are also starting to come back, likewalking up a ramp, once an huge obstacle.Over the last year, there are many ways in which the hands-ontherapy (Integrative Manual Therapy and Matrix Energetics),nutrition (CoQ10), daily brisk walking and a whole sensory exerciseprogram Kim designed for me including disgust exercises and NikeSparqs glasses, has helped me move forward in my goal of going backto the field of education where I was a teacher and administrator. These are the things I can do that I couldn‟t do a year ago:-Walk at a brisk pace while observing the amazing world around me.-Walk on uneven surfaces, wet leaves and bumpy grass in a balancedconfident way.-Expand my rib cage and fill my lungs with air as I move through myday, ensuring that oxygen reaching my healing nervous system.-Read the advertisement on a moving bus, which might not be thateducational but now I have a choice to read it or not.I have a new neurologist now, one who is much more compatible withmy way of looking at things. When I see him, he notes theimprovements in my walking and movement and encourages me topurse the alternative medicine approaches I have found.Truly blessed, I am happy to have found options, which support myprogress and increase my quality of life, so that I can return to workthat has purpose and fulfills me, including the idea of writing a book.I get stronger every day, so that I can soon, I hope, support theeducation of the children near my home in Connecticut and bring amessage of hope to those around me. I am unstoppable." - Mary JaneGiardi.
