  2. 2. Botanical status of tomato •Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), flowering plant of the nightshade family (Solanaceae), cultivated extensively for its edible fruits. Labelled as a vegetable for nutritional purposes, tomatoes are a good source of vitamin C and the phytochemical lycopene.
  3. 3. Nutritional value of Tomato •Tomatoes are the major dietary source of the antioxidant lycopene, which has been linked to many health benefits, including reduced risk of heart disease and cancer. They are also a great source of vitamin C, potassium, foliate, and vitamin K.
  4. 4. Medical value of Tomato •Lycopene is an antioxidant -- it fights molecules called free radicals that can damage your cells and affect your immune system. Because of that, foods high in lycopene, like tomatoes, may make you less likely to have lung, stomach, or prostate cancer. Some research shows they might help prevent the disease in the pancreas, colon, throat, mouth, breast, and cervix as well.
  5. 5. Economic Status of Tomato •Tomatoes contributed about 211 billion Indian rupees in the Indian economy in fiscal year 2019. The highest gross value of the output of about 225 billion rupees was recorded in 2017.
  6. 6. Commercial use of tomato  TOMATO KETCHUP  Tomato ketchup is a condiment made by mixing concentrated tomato paste with water, sugar, vinegar, salt and seasonings.  Tomato ketchup commands about 60-70% of the sauces market in India
  7. 7. Domestic Use of Tomato •It is used in diverse ways, including raw in salads or in slices, stewed, incorporated into a wide variety of dishes, or processed into ketchup or tomato soup. Unripe green tomatoes can also be breaded and fried, used to make salsa, or pickled.
