Best Practices
We’ve made 3 core changes to Klip editing:
First, we’ve simplified Klip creation with our drag and drop interface. It’s a lot easier to get started building Klips, and it’s even easier to build sophisticated Klips.
Second, you can quickly enhance existing Klips without having to dive into code -- you can now start simple and add to a Klip over time with ease.
Third, we’ve added a host of powerful design elements to grant you pixel-level control over the appearance of your Klips.
One of the biggest changes you’ll notice is the component’s palette. This palette provides you with access to all the components or visualizations within Klipfolio. To build a Klip, select a component from the palette and drag it into your Klip.
This solves two problems. First, you can create Klips with multiple components in seconds, without having to edit code.
Second, if you decide you want to use a different visualization in your Klip, you don’t have to start over -- just drag that visualization into your Klip.
These features make it much easier for novice users
Experienced Klip builders will appreciate this next features -- right-click context menus.
Not only can you use these menus to copy and paste components within a Klip, you can copy and paste components between different Klips. Don’t worry, I’ll demo this feature in a few minutes.
The net benefit here is that it’s much easier to build Klips, whether you’re build something simple or sophisticated.
The next theme we worked on in this release is making it easier to upgrade or enhance existing Klips.
One of the key aspects of this is the layout grid component. The grid allows you to arrange components in a horizontal or vertical layout. You can upgrade any existing Klip to use the layout grid, and you can start any new Klip using this component.
The label component is another new component introduced in this release.
I like to think of this component as a jack of all trades. It can be used to display text, numbers, or mini charts in your Klip. The primary use case for this component is to provide additional context for end-users viewing metrics on the dashboard -- although it can be put to use in many creative ways.
The last theme I want to touch on are powerful new Klip design features. When used in tandem with all the other features we’ve talked about, you have much more flexibility when it comes to designing compelling dashboard.
One of the key elements to come out of this release is the separator component. This component allows you to insert horizontal or vertical lines between components. Separators work exceedingly well with the layout grid by allowing you to precisely control white-space within a Klip.
Across the board, we’ve made sure you have more control over key design elements within Klipfolio. The most obvious change is the addition of the layout panel within the editor, which allows you to control padding, width, and alignment for cells within the layout grid.
These controls give you precise control over the way your Klips look and feel on your dashboard.
These changes have made it more important than ever to be aware of some best practices when building dashboards.
First, you will want to plan out your Klips ahead of time, or at the very least, have an idea of what type of visuals you want to use. This will save you time and effort in the end.
Second, always aim to keep your Klip designs as simple as possible. My philosophy is that each Klip should strive to solve a single problem or answer a single question.
Lastly, I recommend that you always design Klips with mobile devices in mind. This will help direct you down a path of responsible design, and to keep things as simple as possible.
