The goal of my project isnt just to inform you on school violence statistics and what bullying is, because\ni think everyone knows what that is, but to raise awareness to it. \nI don&apos;t think people realize how badly the effects of bullying are what horrible outcomes can come from just one word. \n I believe that if more people in the school were friends, and if people understood each other and understood\nwhat people have to go through everyday, it would eliminate the different types of violence that\nhappens at school.\n
  3. After attending Challenge day at our school, i got to experience something that i have never experienced\nbefore. I got to know people i usually wouldnt, and had a better understanding of people. It made me realize\npeople act the way they do because of events and certain situations that has happened to them in their lives. It made\nme realize the reason for bullying and violence are all over ridiculous reasons, and opened my eyes as person and the\nway others should be treated. That one day changed the rest of the way i spent my school year.\nAs a student here at Upper Merion, I see violence happen every single day, whether its bullying \namongst the hallways, students being excluded from group work, physical violence, or on the internet.\nIf affects me in a sense that everyday I witness these things everyday here at school, and I want to make\na difference to help stoping this violence at our school, as well as everyone else can help to stop it. Although\nviolence will always be apart of society, we have ways to eliminate in here in our school. \n\n

  5. School violence is any form of violence inside a school. This incluses bullying, fightng, weapon use, gang violence, \nor electronic aggression. School Violence occurs world wide, grades kindergarden-college. There is not just one \nreason for violence to occur, kids could get an infulence by their home life, video games, tv shows, or other students. \n\n\n
  6. From 1992-2007 there has been approximately 270 deaths due to violence occurring in schools. \n207 of them were gun violence, but then still leaves 63 deaths to what? Someone beat up so badly\n they got killed. Situations like the should not be happening anywhere, but especially on school grounds. \nThe most common type of school violence is bullying. \n\n
  7. A Bully- A blustering, quarrelsome, overbearing person who habitually badgers and intimidates smaller\npeople. In other terms, a controlling, loud, aggressive person who repeatedly and annoying scares people\nwho they view as below them. They try to belittle others, to build themselves up\n
  8. Although there are many different types of bullies, such as gender, race, religion ect, all bullies seem to\n have similar characteristics. The first is poor self esteem. They build themselves up, by putting others\n down. They take there anger they have towards themselves out on other people.\nNext, is being raised in a broken home. Most bullies were not taught the respect they should\n show for others, becuase they were not given that same respect. Bullies often show no remorse after \nwhat they do, which represents a lack of sympathy towards others. And lastly, lonely. Although a lot of\ntimes they dont show it on hte outside, on the inside they feel a lack of love from people in their lives. \n
  9. Bullying occurs when someone intentionally hurts or scares another person. Bullying consists \nof unwelcome behavior such as name calling, teasing, exclusion, humiliated, and\nphysical behavior. Bullying is not just one thing, bullying can be done in different forms but it\nstill leaves the same effects. Each day in America 1 out 4 students will be bullied\n

Cyber bullying is defined as&quot;willful and repeated harm inflicted through the use of computers, cell phones, and other electronic devices.&quot;\nCyber bullying is intentional, deliberate behavior carried out repeatedly over time, and consists of malicious messages, posts, pictures, or\n videos of another person in order to intentionally hurt another person. Studies have found that 19% of youth between the ages of 10 and\n 17 had experienced cyber bullying either as a victim or offender. Cyber bullying is different from other types of bullying in then sense\n that you can do things anonymously. Now a days on the internet you have many different sites in which you can post blogs or comments\n about another person without that person even knowing. One example of that is Formspring. A website where you can anonymously ask\n questions or make posts about that person. This is an easy way to bully others because you don&amp;#x2019;t have to say it to their face, and they dont\n have to know who it is, yet you still get to hurt them. \n\n

Verbal bullying includes name calling, teasing, and emotionally tormenting another. \nVerbal abuse has the most impact on a persons emotions in the long run. words that are harmful\ncan have a big enough impact on you that could taunt you for a long time. Although it&amp;#x2019;s\nnot taken as seriously by others, its the most damaging to a person and can cause behavioral\nissues within that person. \n
  12. Physical bullying consist of hitting, punching, pushing, hair pulling, slapping, pinching, \ntripping, and scratching. Usually the physical bullying comes after someone is verbally\nor cyber bullied. Physical bullying is dangerous to a persons health issues, as well as it\ncan cause mental health issues from the after effect of being violently touched. Although\nthe other forms of bullying is just as serious, it seems that physical bullying is taken more\nseriously by schools such as ISS or detentions, or even getting arrested for physically \nharming someone, yet sometimes verbal abuse is worse, yet not taken as seriously\n
  13. Sexual Bullying is when a student is bullied due to their sexual preference. Sexual bullying also consists\nof making fun of someone who is gay, lesbian, transgender, ect. The other side of sexual bullying is\nforcing or pressuring another person to do sexual things with you when that person is unwilling. If the\nbullying continues it could lead to more serious problems such as rape. \n
  14. Mental Bullying is when someone bullys you, without having to physically do it, and without verbally abusing\nyou. This includes taunting, spreading rumors, and exclusion without speaking. \n
  15. The effects of bullying can cause not only mental health problems, but physical health problems as \nwell. These small problems escalade and slowly turn into larger problems, and thats what most \npeople dont realize. They dont realize the harmful effects of it and how it can put people in danger\nof living a healthy life\n
  16. The first one is low self esteem. Students who are bullied are 3 times more likely to lack self esteem. \nSelf esteem and confidence is important to have in life in order to try new things and expirnment. Students\nwho lack self esteem tend to hold back on things they really want to do. \n
  17. Stress and Anxiety are two other effects of bullying. Anxiety If a student is constantly being bullied, \nthey tend to be scared of that person, which causes a concern in the brain, which leads to stress. Stress\ncan take over a persons life and lead into further and more serious issues. \n
  18. Stress further leads to depression. Depression is the state of being unhappy. Students who are bullied\noften become depressed. Statistics show that 1 out of 8 teens suffer from depression. Depression can \naffect any gender, race, or age, although it is more common for girls to suffer depression then boys.\nDepression affects a person for the rest of their life, whether they conquer it or not. Depression puts\npeople in a dark place in life and it doesnt allow you to live happily. \n
  19. Depression is a serious disease, which leads into more serious effects, such as suicidal thoughts. It is\n estimated that 32,000 people in the United States committee suicide each year. 32,000 people taking\ntheir lifes, most due to unhappiness or a lack of fulfillment in life. Suicide is the third leading cause of\ndeath in people from the age of 15-24. This next video im about to show you is a video i put together\nabout just how much bullying can effect a persons life. \n
  20. Although those students unfortunately felt that they had no way out except for taking their own \nlives, some victims of bullying tend to do the opposite of killing themselves, and lash out and kill others, which leads me to my next topic. \n
  21. Although school shootings do not happen as often as bullying, they are common, and happening\n around the world daily. School shootings are defined as a student bringing a gun to school in the\n hopes of harming students or faculty around them. Students who seem to bring weapons to school\n often have a good reason in their minds why. Some say its bullying that triggered it, and other\n times it can be a physiological disorder or behavioral or it could just be from being pure evil. 1 out\nof 5 guys in 2000 were reposted of bringing a weapon into school. \n
  22. In the united states its estimated that each day 200,000 students bring a gun to school. \nObviously, not all students pull the trigger and use the gun, but they brought it in for a \nreason with the intentions of harming others. So what makes them pull the trigger? and \nwhat is it that keeps them from doing it?\n
  23. I believe its one comment. One little comment you say can make or break a persons day, whether\n its a nice comment, or a mean comment. If someone brings a gun to school, and is walking down\n the hallway and someone yells out &amp;#x201C;your ugly&amp;#x201D; or &amp;#x201C;your a loser&amp;#x201D; they are more likely to attack. Small\nwords such as those, are enough to put someone over the edge, which people dont realize. On the other\n side, one little comment can brighten a persons day. A simple compliment is enough to make someones day. \n
  24. Unfourtunly, in some cases, people never get that nice comment they seek for, or the attention \nthey lack which leads to serious things, such as school shootings. \n
  25. There has been thousands of shootings worldwide, but some of the most devastating ones\n have been here in the United States. One inperticular would be on April 16, 2007 in Blacksburg\n Virginia. This shooting happened at the Virginia Tech College campus. 33 people were killed \nthis day, including the shooter himself. \n
  26. Cho Seung-Hui was the name of the shooter. He was 23-year senior at Virginia Tech and currently\nmajoring in English. Some say he was a quiet student and tend to keep to himself, yet others said\nthey saw warning signs from the beginning. Cho had had three previous hospitaliztions where his\nfamily heard him mumbling angry thoughts, but didn&amp;#x2019;t think too much of it.Cho sent harassing messages\n to two female students, a Virginia court ruled him a danger to himself and others, which caused some\npeople to blaim Virginia for not giving him a more serious consequence. Two months prior to the shooting\nCho had purchased two guns, and days before the shooting, he had purcahsed more bullets. \n\n
  27. The shooting started at about 7:15 am in the West Ambler Johnson hall. A 911 call was made\n stating that there was a gunman in the building. Cho manged to go back to his dorm and make\na video which you saw in the clip above, blaiming others. Police immediately fled to the scene and armed\n up forces. By that time, Cho had moved buildings after shooting multiple students in that\nbuilding. The school was sent e-mails throughout the day and were told to stay put to wherever \nthey were and that the school was now on lock-down. When the police found Cho, they found\nhim dead. After murdering 32 students, and injuring many, he took his own life.\n
  28. This was a quote of one of the lucky surviors who had to witness the rest of her classmates \nget killed, or injured. No college student should have to witness that. \n
  29. Here are all of the students and staff that were killed this day. 32 students were killled. \nThis day will be remeberd in history as the worst school shooting attack in the United States\n
  30. The columbine Massacre was the second worst school shootings to happen in the United \nStates. It happened at Columbine Public High School in Littleton Colorado on April 20, 1999. \nEric Harris and Dylan Klebold were the minds behind the massacre, Eric being 17, Dylan being\n18. They had planned to graduate in just a couple months but were both troubled boys. Both boys\nwere not your &amp;#x201C;normal teenager&amp;#x201D; yet they weren&amp;#x2019;t total outcasts. They grew up in good homes and\nthroughout Elementary school and middle school participated in sports. It wasn&amp;#x2019;t until high school\nthat they had a hard time fitting in and finding the right clique. Sophomore year was when they went\ndownhill. An extreme shift in both personalities occurred.\n
  31. Both boys had deep emotional issues. Dylan had thought about committing suicide two\nyears before the attack. Evidence from there notes, journals, and videos shows that the\nboys had been thinking about planning the attack a year before it actually happened. Both\nboys kept journals where they wrote their hatred for people, their school, and their own\nlives. Both boys were serious about acting upon their hatred, so they started planning\nfor there big attack\n
  32. Eric wrote this in Dylans yearbook a year before the attack. This was just one of the hundreds of nasty writing the boys had made. They \n
  33. The boys started looking up recipes on the internet on how to make pipe bombs along \nwith other explosives. In their journals they kept exact times for what was going to\n happen the day of the attack. They wanted to use bombs, explosives, knives, and guns\nand their intentions were to kill as many people as possible\n
  34. Dylan &amp; Eric arrived to school at 11:10 am on the morning of Tuesday April 20th.\nThe boys placed two pipe bombs out on the open fields and they had been set to\ngo off at 11:20 so police officers would be distracted by these bombs opposed from\nwhat was going to happen inside the school.\nThere first attack in the school they had planned were there bombs. They had propane\nbombs that were set to go off at 11:17 in the cafeteria. The boys placed the bags in the cafeteria and\nwalked out waiting for the bomb to go off. After several minutes of the bomb not going\noff they realized something must of went wrong, and the bombs were no longer going\nto go off. Police said that if these bombs would have went off all 488 students that were\nin the cafeteria that morning would have been killed.\n
  35. They boys continued walking up and down the hallways, laughing while shooting and \nthrowing bombs. The boys entered the library, taunting students, and injuring many.\n They continued shooting out the windows at the police men and paramedics. Minutes after, \nthe boys re-entered the library where they each shot themselves in the heads... Ending\n the massacre. \n
  36. Within a 48 minute rampage, the boys killed 12 students, 1 teacher, and themselves. Together they\nhad fired 188 shots, and had exploded 30 bombs. The boys got the attention they always\nseeked for. They made it on every possible news station across America, and have created\nthe second worst act of school violence in the United States. \n
  37. Every year on April 20th Colmbine high school closes the school\nand pays their respect to the families who lost their children. \n
  38. Isolation and neglect are both huge factors when it comes to bullying and violence. \nIt plays a part in all 3 murderes, yet it also plays a huge role in the bully.\nBeing neglected weather its at home or in school, can trigger a bully, or can cause a person to become a target for a bully. \n\n
  39. Students who suffer from being neglected at home are more likely to have problems socially \ninteracting with others. The lack of attention they receive at home, causes them to seek attention\nat school, no matter if its negative or positive. They seek reactions out of others, for example, \nstarting a fight. They also seek for laughter, for example, making fun of other students in order\nto get laughter from others. \n
  40. There are ways to break up the violence, and ways to stop bullies. Step 1- Talking &amp; Telling. \nIf you are being bullied, TELL SOMEONE. No one wants to be the one to get someone in trouble\nor be considered a &amp;#x201C;taddle tale&amp;#x201D; but thats one of the most effective ways to get it to stop. Another thing is\ntalking, talk to someone. You have teachers and counselors who are always here to listen, and you\nhave students. Students who are willing to listen and reach out for you and give advice. \n
  41. Step 2- Stop stereo-typing. Live by the saying, &amp;#x201C; Dont judge a book by a cover.&amp;#x201D; You have no idea what \npeople go through just by looking at them. You don&apos;t know what happens at home, in school\n, or what they have been through in their lives. Events build up a persons personality and makes\n them who they are. You have no idea what a person goes through unless you take a day to walk\nin there shoes. \n
  42. Step 3- Accept others for who they are. No matter what gender, race, skin color, hair color, sexual\n preference, ect. Everyone is their own person and everyone is beautiful in their own ways. Everyone\n has something their good at, and you should be proud of that thing that you are good at. Embrace your\nuniqueness and love yourself for who you are. \n\n
  43. For my application, i held an event with community of Caring called Challenge Night. For those of you\nhave participated in Challenge day at our school, it had a little bit of that mixed with fun physical and \nmental activities like our activities night. You signed up with a group of four, your &amp;#x201C;clique&amp;#x201D; essentially, \nand then after a few activitys you were put into new groups with people you usually wouldn&amp;#x2019;t be friends\nwith. \n
  44. The goals of Challenge night were to Challenge yourself by doing physical activities, mental activities,\n and social activities. The Physical activities consisted of a blind obstacle course, and 3 legged race. \nThe Mental activity was our block building activity. There was a structure made of blocks and the \ngroups had to work together to build the structure with a couple obstacles a long the way. Such as, only \none person can see the structure, and that person had their hands tied behind them so it required thinking\nand communication. For the social aspect, once you were put into new groups, you were forced to socially\ninteract with your new group, and talk about yourself in order for them to get to know you. You got the\nopportunity to split away from your group, meet new people, and have fun with both your old clique and\nyour new clique. \n
  45. Along with these activities, we had other small activities of the night such as the human knot, face painting,\nthe newlywed game, find your shoes, and poster design. \n

  47. The point of this activity is to show that everyone is similar in ways\nyet everyones different. It gives you a better understanding of what people go through and what people have been through. \n
  48. This quote really stood out to me because its saying don&apos;t let someone else define you. Don&amp;#x2019;t let\nsomeone else bring you down in life, YOU define YOU. You decide how you live yourself, and don&amp;#x2019;t\nlet someone else bringing you down effect the way you live. You create your own story in your life, \nand in every story theres a few bad chapters, but dont let that discourage you. Never be harassed or \nbullied to point of silence. Stand up for the person you are, and don&apos;t be discouraged by others. You\nare in control of your own life, not any one else. \n
