SEO for business: Hold on to your ‘white hat’!

  1. 1. SEO for business: Hold on to your ‘white hat’!
  2. 2. © Knct Lab | www.knctlab.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- • If you are tossing your hat into the SEO ring, make sure it is white and not black! Businesses that keep their strategies clean and follow ‘white hat SEO’ techniques will benefit while those opting for short- term gains will suffer in the long run.
  3. 3. © Knct Lab | www.knctlab.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Stay on the right side and win • Employing SEO techniques for better visibility and higher ranking in search results is legitimate and even encouraged. But SEO will work only if used correctly and lawfully. • As websites begin to understand SEO better, some are tempted to use the so-called black hat SEO tactics which might initially bring in more traffic and better visibility. • big brands and prestigious websites like the BBC, Mozilla, BMW and many others have been penalised by Google for black hat techniques, intentional or otherwise, such as spamming, unnatural links and cloaking.
  4. 4. © Knct Lab | www.knctlab.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Some of the common black hat tactics and the possible consequences of employing them: • Keyword overuse This is the most common black hat tactic that businesses employ. Perhaps because it is the easiest to implement. • If the content does not read well and smooth and is cluttered with the keywords, the user will have trouble reading it and be repelled rather than be attracted to your website. • This will not only affect the website’s credibility in the eyes of the user but it might also lead to penalisation for trying to trick the search engine with too many keywords.
  5. 5. © Knct Lab | www.knctlab.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- • Cloaking Some websites try to be too clever by half and employ a black hat technique known commonly as cloaking. • What they do is code their web pages in two ways – one web page will show a set of keyword-stuffed content to only search engine crawlers while the other website will have another set of more ‘readable’ content for viewers. • This might not put off readers but it definitely will fail search engine guidelines that specify that content should not be created exclusively for search engines.
  6. 6. © Knct Lab | www.knctlab.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- • Invisible text This is similar to cloaking. Hidden text is content that only search engines can view but the viewers cannot. • These texts are used to put in extra keywords to increase the page’s rankings. • This can be done by putting white text on a white background or hide links by attaching it to a single character etc. These might help the website for a while but sooner or later, such black hat techniques will be discovered.
  7. 7. © Knct Lab | www.knctlab.com ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- • Social networking spam Spamming social networks and comments with links and messages or posting irrelevant links and social messages on web pages come under the gamut of black hat tactics and thus will lead to penalisation. In conclusion, if you hope to get long-term benefits out of SEO, wear a white hat!
