The treatment of dangerous substances, where the risk of explosion or fire exists that can be caused by an electrical spark, arc, or hot temperatures, requires specifically defined instrumentation located in a hazardous location. It also requires that interfacing signals coming from a hazardous location be unable to create the necessary conditions to ignite and propagate an explosion. This document deals with the physical principles and fundamentals of explosion protection. Regardless of geographic location, the physical principles of explosion protection are identical.
