Will County Health Department, Family Health Services
Healthier U.S. School Challenge:Smarter LunchroomsResearch
 Researched this program for the CDASH grant
 Created educational materials for members working under this grant so they can get
a better understanding of the program
 Members working under this grant can then take these materials and educate
schools on the program as a form of promotion and outreach to get schools to
participate
 Materials:
o Team Nutrition Program informative sheet
o HUSSC:SL Program informative sheet
o Steps to apply for the HUSSC:SL program
o Obesity facts and statistics
WeWILL WorkHealthy Summit
 Assisted Dominique with filling RTYD bags
o Each organization to attend the summit was able to take a bag with them
o Bags included posters, toolkits, RTYD water bottles, etc.
o Materials allowed organizations to set up RTYD and promote the campaign in
their own workplace
 Attended WeWILL Work Healthy Summit (Presence St. Joseph)
o Learned about promoting wellness in the workplace
o How to start and promote a wellness group in the workplace
o The importance of wellness in the workplace
Social Media Posts
 Used the research I had begun collecting to create 3 different Facebook posts (with
images/infographics) for the WCHD Facebook page
o Week 1: Health Benefits of Walking
o Week 2: Setting Up a Walking Routine
o Week 3: Walking and Staying Active at Work
 Attended a Will County Partners for Healthy Families meeting and created a
Facebook Post for their Facebook page
o Facebook post on upcoming 5K walks and events that are family/kid friendly
o Facebook post on healthy recipes for Christmas events
o Facebook post on healthy snack options for classroom Christmas parties
Smoke Free Housing
 Helped Amrita by copying over contact information of all Real Estate agents and
offices in Will County into an excel spreadsheet
o She contacts each office/agent to educate them on the benefits of smoke free
housing
 Researched contact information for condominiums and homeowners associations in
Will County
TobaccoComplianceChecks
 Went on a compliance check with Amrita and Cindy to a bar in Will County
o Upon entering the bar, we walked around and looked for evidence of indoor
smoking (cigarette butts, ashes, ash trays, etc.)
o Found evidence inside the bar and also a lack of signage explaining it is a
smoke free institution due to the Smoke Free Illinois Act
Created and Hosted EmployeeWellness Walk
 Spent the first 5 weeks of internship researching topics related to walking for health
and the health benefits of walking
 Designed and presented a Wellness Walk plan to Cindy
o Plan included:
 Materials I would need
 How many volunteers I would need
 Information and handouts that would be discussed and available
 Which paths I would have employees walk
 Different stations and activities participants would complete
 Prizes that would be offered
o Plan was edited and discussed and input on ways to improve the plan was
accepted and acted upon
o Plan was then finalized for Sharrita to present at Wellness Committee
meeting
 Created a volunteer sign-up form for Wellness Committee members to
volunteer for various jobs and assist me on the day of the walk
 Designed promotional materials regarding the Employee Wellness Walk for WCHD
staff
o Wellness Walk event flyer
o Wellness Walk event email that was sent out to each staff member
o Wellness Walk newsletter paragraph for FHS newsletter
 Designed and printed walking event handouts for the information table on the day
of the event
o Health Benefits of Walking
o Participant sign-up sheet
o Employee Walking Group interest sheet

o How to Start a Walking Routine
o Walking Groups and Clubs in the area
o Informative sheet on the Apple iPhone Health App
 Crafted prizes as incentives for walk participants
o Purchased prizes such as Fitbit arm bands, cell phone running arm band,
water bottles and measuring cups
o Laminated Rethink Your Drink infused water recipe cards to attach to water
bottles
o Researched healthy food recipes, typed up recipe cards, printed and
laminated them to be attached to measuring cups
o Attached recipe booklets to water bottles and recipe cards with metal hooks
and ribbons
 Created informative dry-erase boards for each station
o Station 1: Pre-walk warm up
o Station 2: How to Take Your Resting and Target Heart Rate
o Station 3: Post-walk stretching
 October 16th, 2015 – Hosted Employee Wellness Walk
o Set up information table and station tables
o Worked information table
 Handed out documents
 Answered employee questions and provided guidance
 Educated employees on the importance of walking and staying active
 Handed out and collected raffle tickets
o Broke down materials, tables, and stations
o Pulled raffle tickets and called winners to hand them out

 Assessed amount of employees who showed interest in an employee walking group
at the Wellness Walk by looking over sign-up sheet
 Created a list of survey questions to be emailed out to WCHD employees
o Survey purpose is to:
 Further generate and assess interest
 Find a coordinator for walking group
 Gather which days and times would work best for employees
 Created the Employee Walking Group Interest Survey on Survey Monkey
 Assessed survey results
 Compiled a list of interested employees
 Compiled a list of coordinator responsibilities and summarized survey results
 Contacted potential walking group coordinators
Designed Educational Materials
 Put together a bulletin board on the health benefits of walking
o Including the prevention of chronic diseases and Will County obesity and
chronic disease statistics
 Designed and printed a brochure on the health benefits of walking
o Including statistics, tips for including walking in your daily schedule, and
WCHD campus walking trails map
 Put together a bulletin board for the Wellness Committee here at Will County Health
Department in the main hallway
o Included upcoming wellness events, a copy of the campus walking trails,
pictures of Will County Health Department employees exercising during
meetings and in their personal gardens, and a copy of the current wellness
newsletter
 Created an email response for Will County Partners for Healthy Families with links
to websites for active family activities in the Will County area
o Indoor rock climbing, bowling, swimming, roller skating, laser tag, etc.
