Where will I get the Money for college? !!!
Again, no worries my friend! I did two things that really helped my college budgeting. First, I visited the Financial Aid Office in room M2115 in the Main Building. I made an appointment with a Financial Aid Advisor. The Financial Aid Advisor gave me information about Grants and Student Loans that I could apply for – they even have a Work-study Program.
By talking with a Financial Aid Advisor I was able to find outthat I qualified for a Pell Grant and a First Generation Scholarship! Both of these helped pay for my education. So I would recommend that you stop by the Financial Aid Office and see what financial resources are available to you!
Next, I applied to The College Opportunity Fund
The College Opportunity Fund is Money that the state of Colorado will pay toward your college tuition if you are a resident of Colorado!
If you are a Resident of Colorado, The College Opportunity Fund will pay $62 toward every college credit hour you register for - up to 145 credits total. Apply now! $$$ Apply for the College Opportunity Fund by going back to the Registration Checklist. Then click on the College Opportunity Fund link…it’s the wise thing to do!
How will I know what Classes to take?!!!
Don’t worry! ACC has an AcademicAdvising Department with Academic Advisors and CareerAdvisors that will help you plan your education and career goals. They will help you select the specific classes you will need to take for your selected area of study.
That’s right Oliver!Your Academic Advisor will use your ACT or Accuplacer Test Scores to help you determine what classes to take.
You are required to provide a copy of your ACT Test scores to the Testing Center. You can bring a copy of your test scores to the Testing Center, or you can fax a copy to the Testing Center at 303.797.5988. Note: If your ACT Test Scores are more than 5 years old they will not be accepted. In this case you will need to take the Accuplacer Test.
Bentley, remember, I got a GED so I didn’t have ACT Scores.I took the Accuplacer Test in the ACC Testing Center instead. The Accuplacer Test is a college placement test that evaluates your level of English, Reading Comprehension and Math skills.
If you would like to learn more about the Accuplacer Test there is additional information on the Testing Center web pages.Go to the ACC home page and click on the Student Resources Tab
In the left sidebar you will find a link to the Testing Center webpage – click on this link
On the Testing Center webpage you will find links to information about the Accuplacer Test. There is also a link to an online study resource which provides sample questions for each area of the Accuplacer Test
2.Provide Test Scores Once you have your student ID number, you can take your ACT scores to the ACC Testing Center on the 2nd floor in the Main Building in room M2280. OR, if you don’t have test scores ( or test scores less than 5 yeas old), take the Accuplacer Test. The fee for the test is $10.00 and you will need to provide a photo ID. Allow yourself two hours to take the test. 1.Submit an Application to the College. Within 3-5 business days you will receive an acceptance email or letter. In your acceptance letter will be your student ID number. Here are the steps you need to take to prepare to see an Academic Advisor… 3. See an Academic AdvisorOnce the Testing Center has your Test Scores, you are ready to see an Academic Advisor. Go to the Advising Office on the 2nd floor in the Main Building in room M2850. You can call and make an appointment at 303.797.5664, or you may come in as a walk-in.
WhenIcame to ACC, I had already taken several college courses at another college. So instead of taking the Accuplacer Test, I brought in a copy of my transcripts and showed them to my academic advisor. I was able to transfer several general education courses from my prior college into ACC, so I didn’t need to provide any test scores. How will I know what to declare as my major?
There is one more thing that you need to investigate before you meet with your academic advisor. You will want to be able to tell you advisor what your education plans are - or at least what you are interested in studying.
If you don’t know what you want to study, read through the variety of the degree and certificate programs that ACC offers. Then narrow down the programs that meet your interests. Narrow Down Your Interests
To see the list of the Degrees and Programs that ACC offers in our College Catalog go to the ACC Home page and select the Schedules/Catalogs link in the upper right hand corner of the webpage.
To view the list of Programs that ACC offers view page 31 in our online College Catalog. To view specific curriculum information about each program, scroll to the page number listed to the right of its title.
Its very helpful to your Academic Advisor if you have a idea of what you want to study. If you know what you want to study or know the career area that you want to work in, the Advisor can provide you with specific curriculum guidance and help you select classes to take.
Not sure what you want to study? If you don’t have any idea what you want to study or just have a general idea of what you want to study…(like “health care”) – it would be beneficial to see a Career Advisor. ACareer Advisor can help you narrow down your preferences for career choices and in this way help determine what classes you should take.
If you would like to talk with a Career Advisor call303.797.5809 to make an appointment, or come to the Career Center located on the 2nd floor in the Main Building in the Library. Questions about Careers and Jobs? Come to the Career Center to talk with a Career Advisor. A Career Advisor can tell you about job descriptions, the education required for specific jobs and the salary ranges for different career areas. Call 303.797.5908 For an appointment.
Bentley and I hope we have answered most of your biggest questions about starting out at Arapahoe Community College We know we enjoyed taking classes at ACC and we hope you have a great experience too.
If you have questions about any of the information presented, you can call the Academic Advising Department at 303.797.5664, or come into the Advising Office as a walk-in to see an advisor.Thank you for choosing ACC as your college.
