Abstract—The idea of the present work is to use advance system
to improve the power management and smart metering with
integrated renewable energy resources. This Idea use renewable
energy sources for example solar panel at home and street poles
then by using smart metering system it canbe found how much
power produced by the customer and how much extra used by
him and accordingly the customer can be charged. Smart
metering system use RF or IR or optical communication system
to transfer data to the master meter reading instrument (MMRI)
or meter reading instrument (MRI). MMRI and MRI use GSM
to transfer data to the operator’s server and then received data is
processed according to the requirement and this data can alsobe
uploaded to the website used by the distributor, and further it can
be used to send billing information to the customers. This study
deals with the various advantages and disadvantages of
implementation of this system.
Keywords— MMRI; RF; power;GSM.
I. INTRODUCTION
This is an advance system to improve the power
management and smart metering with integrated renewable
energy resources. This Idea use renewable energy sources for
example solar panel at home and street poles and collected the
whole energy generated by this and power from the power
station then by using smart metering system to find out how
much power produced by the customer and how much extra
consumed by him and accordingly can be charged from the
customer
Smart metering system use RF or IR or optical
communication system to transfer data to the Master Meter
Reading Instrument (MMRI) or Meter Reading Instrument
(MRI).
MMRI and MRI use GSM to transfer data to the
operator’s server then received data is processed according to
the requirement and then data also uploaded to the website
used by the distributer. From the received data, Distributer can
send SMS to the customer regarding their bill. He provides
billing software for payment of bill.
A. SMART METERING
According to this idea, a RF, IR and optical
communication media can be used for downloading the meter
data from the customer meter, a RF communication mode can
be used for the transfer of the more than 100 meters data with
the help of Master meter reading instrument (MMRI) which is
installed with the GSM Chip, which help in sending data the
server.
On server end assessment of that data can be done.
This data can be formatted the particular way and further can
be sent to a particular website so that everyone can see their
electricity consumption and billing information.
Implementation the billing software is done further so that
customer can pay their bill online.
From the server, data can be assessed to inform the
customer about their bill through SMS to the registered mobile
number of customer.
Master Meter Reading Instrument (MMRI) can
assess data from meter with the help of RF Communication at
any free RF frequency band which is available and it can
communicate with the help of hopping method up to 150
meter or more depends on the accuracy of the program and
hardware.
Fig.1 Smart Meter communication
In the fig.1, it indicate the smart meter with the help
MMRI and MRI can send data to the LAN from where Service
provider can access the data. Service provider can format the
data and send data to the website.

Applications
MMRI send data in the packets so that if
communication breaks then also it can send data after
connection again establish. MMRI cannot send whole data at
one time if connection break then whole data will be lost or
corrupted. Each packet will be provided a unique number so
that easy to recognize the accurate data with correct sequence.
Meter can send the data to MMRI in packets so that
every meter can get its chance to send its data. We can also
send defecting or tempering of meter information to the
MMRI so that tempering can be detected and proper action
can be taken against that person for tempering of meter.
By using this type of record maintaining service
Provider can also analyze data so that they can find out the
timing zone in a day for which power consumption is more for
particular region so that they can increase power timing for
that particular region.
Fig.2 Block diagram of Power Management System with
smart metering.
In Fig.2 shows the whole Idea of the system, power from
power grid and from renewable energy resources i.e. solar
system collected at the power distribution station then
collected power can be utilized in the effectively. Data from
MMRI collected at the server end and after formatting
properly that data can be utilized for all application purpose.
Service provider can utilize that data for the improvement
of the meter and other hardware without interfering the
working of meter and customer by continues analyses of the
data obtained from meter along with data billing information.
Optical communication has less range as compared to
IR and RF so it is optional if anyone want to use it. IR
communication(760 nm wavelength) has approximately 1 or 2
meter range which can be extended for further improvement of
our hardware. RF communication has about 100 to 200 meter
range which can be extended by using hoping method in the
RF communication.
B. Master Meter Reading Instrument (MMRI)
MMRI can be installed in the any location which is
able to cover more meters in its RF range. MMRI has GSM
module and RF communication circuit.
It will be small device which can be powered by the
small charger with the rechargeable Ni-Cd battery with long
life. They can use GPRS system to it so that they can find out
the exact location of MMRI and defected MMRI can also
replace and can update its RTC (Real Time Clock).
It can be installed in any pole above the head so that
no one can harm to it. Service provider can use its protection
from moisture, rain and dust etc.
If data not send successfully then it can send data
again. It will store data for one weak and in its memory and
then after one weak it automatically erase its data after
successfully uploaded on the related server so that need not
much large amount of memory space.
Service Provide can provide USB and UART
communication port for manual downloading the MMRI and
we can develop meter reading instrument (MRI) for the
purpose of manual downloading of data with IR, RF and
optical communication.
II. BENEFITS
A series of benefits includes the following
• Man power reduced for maintaining record of each
individual meter.
• Transparency increase as all data uploaded on
website so that everyone can see easily their data and
billing regarding information.
• It will increase the digitalization of metering system
in India.
• Reduced cost as service provider can access data
about the defected meter remotely.
• Customer friendly as they receive information
through SMS and website also.
• Human error can be avoided.
• Demand and distribution management.
• Accurate billing because inaccurate billing give
difficult revenue planning.

Data Base ManagementWide Area Network
• Intelligent building are not imaginable without smart
metering devices
• Customer reduces emission of CO2.
• Can compensate the rate at the peak hour of
consumption.
• Load profile is the load record with time so that
production company manage according to load.
• 15 minute load profile so the maximum load used by
customer can be detected.
• It is very difficult to find fault in meter in the
customer end by manually.
• It is the two way communication and bidirectional
flow of energy.
• Better control of bulk generation.
• Real time monitoring and control of power system
reliability.
• Expert from different domain need to be involved.
• Cyber security and cloud computing bound to get
increasing important.
• On the spot billing using hand held system.
• Increase use of renewable energy sources which have
variable nature.
• Employee safety assures.
• Self-healing.
III. SECURITY
Service Provider should use encoding for
communication so that unauthorized user cannot access the
data and only specific software (used for that purpose) can
access the data and it also cannot change the data. Specific
server used for this purpose which is also password protected
and used other security also.
In this way they can get a much more secure system for this
purpose.
IV. CONCLUSION
In this paper we have presenting the case that power
management system with integrated renewable resources is
under research.
It poses many unique challenges and opportunity, e.g.
interoperability, scalability, and security. The success of future
power management depends heavily on the communication
infrastructure, devices, and enabling services and software.
Due to space limitations, there are a number of important
issues we have not discussed here in detail, e.g. power saving
technologies, distributed/centralized data processing, and
infrastructure management. In particular, an exciting research
challenge is how this power management system fits into the
overall picture of the future Internet, currently under
development.
V. FUTURE SCOPE
• By this method power supply automation can be
done.
• Home appliances can automatically controlled by
using sensors.
• Continuously analyze of system by using feedback
from the installed remotely meter find the error and
further improvement of the system.
• Cost of installation and maintenance can be reduced
drastically.
• Renewable energy integration.
• Awareness to the customer about new policy and rate
of power system.
