Questions?
17. Reconstructing the Business of Light:
A Sweeping Response to LEDs
LEDs have changed the paradigm of the lighting industry. We must reconstruct our
approach to suit.
Colour metrics are more accurate and complex.
There is a wide range of suppliers so we must work harder to obtain colour consistency
across a project.
We can now even prescribe what colour we want our white to be.
Instead of lamp life, consider useful life. Leveraging controls can reduce replacement
costs.
LED luminaires have allowed for unprecedented freedom in design.
The performance of LED luminaires depends on many things, such as: light engine,
driver, and optics.
There is a wide variety of configurations to achieve luminaire performance.
Modifications and custom are less difficult and more affordable.
Mock ups and reviewing samples are strongly recommended.
The process to specify and design with LED luminaires has added steps.
LED drivers are inherently dimmable.
Wireless controls are reliable and inexpensive.
It is critical to coordinate the lighting controls luminaire by luminaire.
Integrating technology can provide many experiential advantages, but adds layers of
design and coordination.
Aesthetically similar luminaires can have very different performance. It is often difficult
to find equals.
Competition is still possible with a single name specification.
Lighting design is now part of creating the experience!
