Overview
Well managed research outputs & data
management are more discoverable &
available for re-use & contribute to
increased research impact, enhanced
research practice (including collaboration)
& improved research outcomes

Library e-Strategy
• Changes in academic libraries
• Include a redefinition of the library’s support to research
• Library E-Strategy and CPUT Research Environment
• To develop a service infrastructure aimed at comprehensively
supporting the whole life cycle of research at a university
• Critical starting elements
• Policy and guidelines development
• Setting up of a Research Data Management Working Group
• Run a pilot project and
• Implement the project

e-Research initiatives and international
partnerships
• CPUT Libraries part of international university libraries
group actively involved in developing collaborative
e-Research infrastructure: members are from:
• Germany
• Thailand
• Ireland
• South Africa
• Canada
• Singapore

Scholarly Communication Landscape at
CPUT
• Research outputs
• MTech and DTech Research Reports
• Published articles
• Conference papers
• Books and Book chapters
• Technical papers
• etc…..

Digital Knowledge
• Digitizing both print and born digital scholarly content into
and Institutional Repository
• Increasing the visibility of the university’s research outputs
• Creating opportunities for researchers to be identified for
collaborative research ventures
• Open research – renders its self to scrutiny and confirms its
credibility

New Focus of Library’s Research Support
• Building a service infrastructure aimed at
comprehensively supporting the whole life cycle of
research at a university
• Library’s involvement in the research process will include:
• research proposals
• data collection planning
• field research
• analysis of data
• publication of results
• storage of analysed research data
• controlled access to stored data

Research Cycle and RDM
• RDM - part of the research process, and aims to make the
research process as efficient as possible, and meet
expectations and requirements of the university, research
funders, and legislation.
• How it concerns researchers:
• Create data and plan for its use
• Organize, structure, and name data
• Keep it – make it secure, provide access, store and back it up
• Find information resources, and share with collaborators and more
broadly, publish and get cited

Global Trends in Open Access & RDM
• Open Access
• Various Declarations on Open Access – to make publicly funded
research more accessible
• Institutional Repositories
• RDM
• A requirement in many countries that publicly funded research
make data more accessible
• Certain types of research – simply require that data is shared
among researchers – e.g. climate data, physics, and many other
disciplines

National (RSA) Environment
• Various Open Access and RDM initiatives
• Yunus and Zanele’s presentations

CPUT Environment
• DRUSSA: The development and implementation of the
research uptake and research uptake management initiative
which seeks to actively ensure public benefits and utilization of
research
• RTI Blueprint:
• Supportive, modern library facilities, and expanded curation functions
(7.1.3.j)
• “improvement of systems which relate to the entire spectrum of
support services to ensure seamlessness and effectiveness in service
delivery at all stages of the RTI cycle”.
• World-class research, technology and innovation information
technology systems (7.1.3 i.)

The Way Forward
• Policy Development and approval
• Working Group on Research Data Management
• Policy implementation through:
• Provision of strategic and operational leadership to the CPUT Libraries
and key stakeholders in the development of a research data
management infrastructure for CPUT
• Reporting to:
• Senate Research Committee on Research Data Management Activities
• Senate Library Committee on Research Data Management activities
• ICT Committee
