It’s in our self-interest to protect the natural world, and by building upon a foundation of science, partnership and fieldwork, CI finds global solutions to global problems. At this organisation, success is based on human terms. While many people believe that environmental initiatives are about saving nature, CI works on the basis that people need nature to thrive. Nature is in fact the only way to save ourselves, and the goal of environmentalism at the end of the day is to protect humanity. Thus, CI is calling for a shift in people’s perspectives on their relationship with nature through a strategy of identifying the game-changing innovations needed to support its efforts, displaying its solutions on the ground in more than 25 countries by showing how protecting nature leads to positive change for people, and partnering with prominent institutions to strengthen the lessons it has learnt beyond the geographical boundaries of its field demonstrations. “ ‫يقول‬ Indonesia's The Bird's Head Seascape. © Conservation International/photo by Sterling Zumbrunn. Indonesia’s The Bird’s Head Seascapeis now a global model for community-driven conservation at scale and is turning the tide on threats such as destructive fishing methods and overfishing. In 2004, Conservation International forged an unprecedented collaboration with The Nature Conservancy, the World Wide Fund for Nature and numerous local partners to sustainably manage coastal and marine resources in the Bird’s Head Seascape. The collaboration ensures food security and sustainable economic benefits for local communities while also preserving the Seascape’s globally significant biodiversity. © Conservation International/photo by Sterling Zumbrunn.

Nature doesn’t need people, but people need nature as our food, water, health and jobs depend on the health of the planet’s ecosystems. However, humans have been taking more than nature can give, destroying the earth’s ability to provide the clean air, stable climate, fresh water and food we rely on and creating a global crisis. CI’s Chief Operating Officer, Jennifer Morris, comments, “Nature conservation has proven it can improve economies and livelihoods. Two years after joining CI, working directly with local community-owned businesses, I led the formal establishment of CI’s Verde Ventures fund to boost small- and medium-sized businesses that support human well-being by protecting the important services – like fresh water, food, energy and more – that communities receive from healthy ecosystems. Since its creation, the businesses supported by Verde Ventures have generated sales of nearly USD 200 million, employment of nearly 60,000 people in 14 countries and the protection and restoration of more than 515,000 hectares of important ecosystems.” Since its founding in January 1987 in Washington DC by Peter Seligmann and Spencer Beebe, CI’s 900-strong team in over 30 countries, together with more than 2,000 partners, has helped to protect over 3.4 million square kilometres of land and sea, from Madagascar and Brazil to the the Pacific Islands. That first year, CI signed the first-ever debt- for-nature swap agreement with the Bolivian government, purchasing a portion of its foreign debt in exchange for the protection of 1.5 million hectares in and around the Beni Biosphere Reserve, which went on to inspire many similar deals. In 1991, it created the first global map showing how few unaltered habitats remain on earth, attracting international attention. Two years later, it played a key role in the creation of a marine protected area in the northern Gulf of California – its first-ever marine engagement. Today, some of CI’s recent projects include saving Africa’s elephants, financing long-term marine protection i n t h e P a c i f ic, e v a lu at i n g o ce a n health worldwide, protecting forests in M ad aga sca r a nd F iji to combat climate change, improving lives in B ol iv i a a nd Br a z i l, s a feg u a rd i ng manta rays in Indonesia, boosting European and US government funding for conservation, creating opportunities for g r e e n g r o w t h i n G uy a n a a n d furthering environmental standards for consumer goods. It’s financing of these initiatives stems from a diverse range of sources. In FY13, it earned USD105.6 million in revenue, with 34 per cent from corporations, 27 per cent from foundations, 19 per cent from governments, NGOs and multilaterals, 10 per cent from individuals, 4 per cent from investments and 6 per cent from other income. THINKING BIG CI’s current approach recognises nature as the foundation of a healthy society. In 2009, it shifted its mission to focus on human well-being after two decades of conservation impact to better reflect its core belief that people need nature to thrive. It encourages sustainable production, working with companies, especially big business with sizeable Africa-Madagascar. © Conservation International/photo by Sterling Zumbrunn. Encouraging effective governance, it engages with national governments to make certain that leaders possess the knowledge and tools required to sustainably administer their countries’ natural wealth for the long-term well-being of their populations. While small-scale interventions in remote villages may have proven successful in the past, CI realised that to achieve the necessary level of impact, it had to scale it up and work at every level to find solutions. Morris notes, “In many ways, our current ‘macro’ approach to achieve systemic governance change is a lot harder than working with individual villages. But I firmly believe that the impacts we will have if we’re successful are much, much greater than before.” Looking at the big picture, rather than just collaborating with local communities all over the world, CI works closely with governments, foundations and businesses and brings all relevant parties to the table so that decisions are made collectively and responsibly, and because together they can make a larger impact. It champions big ideas that advocate planet-sized changes to fix global problems in the long term rather than focusing on one sector or one issue, drawing on the influence of its numerous partners and decades of experience. Morris explains, “Given the enormity of the issues facing the health of our planet, all sectors must do what they can to measure the value of natural assets that were once taken for granted.” Having lived in Namibia teaching English to local women over 22 years ago where she noticed that many of the hea lth issues faced by its communities were directly related to poverty and to the environment, Morris shares, “Working daily with women there, I learnt that their land, close to environmental collapse, was negatively impacting health and economic development in ways I had never imagined. As business drives economic growth, it believes that caring for nature and growing the bottom line aren’t mutually exclusive. Given the rate of human consumption, the effects of climate change and a growing population, humanity is headed towards an unsustainable future where the earth is unable to meet its demands. Therefore, companies can and should be conservation champions, satisfying increasing global demands for food, water and energy in ways that benefit both people and the planet. For over 20 years, CI has actively engaged with companies that have the biggest impacts to help them become better guardians of the environment and teach them that protecting the planet can increase profits, too. In 2001, it established the Center for Environmental Leadership in Business to assist companies in reducing their environmental footprints. It has worked collaboratively with a range of businesses, from small-scale farming co-ops to the world’s largest multinationals, including ArcelorMittal, BHP Billiton, Northrop Grumman Corporation, United Airlines, Toyota, Shell, HP, HSBC, Coca-Cola and Disney. Morris remarks, “Working with committed corporate partners, CI is demonstrating the important role the private sector can have in financing the creation and long-term financing of protected areas which benefit people.” the linkages between the health and well-being of people with the health and well-being of nature. More than half of modern medicines are derived from wild plants and animals, yet we’ve elevated the extinction rate to 1,000 times its natural level. I realised that in order for these people to not only survive, but thrive, the ecosystems that provided for them had to be protected and managed sustainably. Protecting nature in a bubble is not the answer. We need to make sure that the people who own and use the resources – whether they be local communities, global businesses or national governments – are able to benefit more from keeping nature intact rather than destroying it.” “Given the rate of human con sumption, the effects of climate change and a growing population, humanity is headed towards an unsustainable future where the earthisunabletomeetitsdemands.” Greater Mekong Region CI is working in the Greater Mekong to restore and protect forest resources and ensure that Cambodia’s Tonle Sap Lake and its floodplains remain a healthy, naturally functioning freshwater ecosystem. We focus on improving the well-being and economic resilience of the “floating villages” atop the lake — ensuring that people have access to food, safe drinking water, renewable energy and diverse ways to make a living. © Kristin Harrison & Jeremy Ginsberg. As all businesses have an impact on the planet, CI both challenges and collaborates with them, encouraging them to improve their business practices and invest in conservation. Secondly, it supports sustainable sourcing. As the source of most products comes from nature, CI works with corporate leaders and industry associations to secure the sustainability of those sources, preserving the forests, fresh water, oceans and other natural resources necessary for the survival of mankind. Thirdly, it invests in forest carbon because deforestation is one of the main causes of global climate change. Since protecting forests is the most direct and cost-effective way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, CI and its partners embrace innovative ways to reduce global carbon emissions through its forest carbon offset programme. Lastly, CI convenes corporate leaders through its Business & Sustainability Council, a forum for influential companies to discuss conservation with CI’s experts on science and sustainability. Council members representing a variety of industries and more than 3.8 million employees share success stories, talk about new and innovative field projects and promote leadership in sustainability. In 1991, CI entered into its first corporate partnership with McDonald’s on the Amistad Conservation and Development Initiative, where the food giant’s funding helped local farmers, community groups and businesses make existing farms more profitable, thereby averting encroachment into the La Amistad Biosphere Reserve stretching from Costa Rica to Panama. In 1996, it began work with high-impact industry in one of the first examples of collaboration between a leading non-governmental organisation and a major energy company: it partnered with Mobil Oil Corporation to examine environmental and social impacts related to oil exploration in the Peruvian Amazon. In 1998, it joined forces with Starbucks, the globe’s largest specialty coffee company, by supporting local projects in biodiversity-rich coffee growing nations like Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, Peru and Indonesia. Together, they developed guidelines for the ethical sourcing of coffee to benefit both people and the environment. The programme, which granted farmers better access to markets and supports sustainable production, improved the livelihoods of more than a million workers on 100,000 coffee farms in 20 countries. In 2004, CI started collaborating with Walmart to integrate environmental sustainability into its business, thereby greening the supply chain of the world’s biggest retailer, from a traceable jewellery line to palm oil and beef that has not contributed to deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon. NATURE IS SPEAKING “Nature is speaking and it’s time for humanity to listen up,” asserts Morris. Launched last October, CI’s “Nature Is Speaking” awareness campaign (www.natureisspeaking. org), which uses a series of short films narrated by Hollywood celebrities like Penélope Cruz, Harrison Ford, Edward Norton, Robert Redford, Julia Roberts and Kevin Spacey to highlight the close links between nature and human well-being, aims to give environmentalism a major makeover. In giving voice to nature, the ocean, rainforest, soil, water, redwood, coral reef and even Mother Nature herself speak directly to audiences. “I have fed species greater than you, and I have starved species greater than you… I am prepared to evolve. Are you?” asks Mother Nature, voiced by Julia Roberts in the first film of the series. “Every living thing on this planet needs me,” states the ocean through the voice of Harrison Ford, who also serves as CI’s Vice Chairman. Sub-Saharan Africa - CI has had conservation projects in the Ankeniheny- Zahamena Corridor since 1996. They are currently supporting the government of Madagascarinthedevelopmentandimplementationofaconservation-conscious sustainable development strategy for the area. Together with the government, nonprofits and local communities, their work is helping to keep the forest healthy for the nearly 325,000 people who call the area home and the millions more who depend on it. © Conservation International/photo by Russell A. that people need nature to survive, we are turning the conversation around and making the movement relevant to entirely new audiences.” Encouraging people to support CI is secondary, while the campaign’s main purpose is to convey the idea that saving nature is really about saving ourselves and to incite people to consider just how much we all depend on nature every “The environmental movement has missed the mark when talking about nature because it tends to present nature as something that is separate from people,” says Dr M Sanjayan, CI’s Executive Vice President and Senior Scientist. Conservation International is a founding partner of the Ocean Health Index and serves as the managing partner. The Ocean Health Index identifies people as part of a human-ocean ecosystem. The Index is the first assessment tool that scientifically measures key elements from all dimensions of the ocean’s health — biological, physical, economic and social — to assesshow sustainably people are using the ocean.Morethan65scientistsandpartnersworkedtogethertodeveloptheIndex,whichprovidesanannualassessmentofoceanhealthusinginformationfromover100scientificdatabases.©LeviS.Norton.
  8. 8. 104 30 ‫شواطئ‬Shawati’ 30 AD day, for ever ything. By reframing the conversation, the message is that saving nature is a means to an end – nature isn’t at risk but people are – and that environmental conservation helps to solve people’s daily problems including alleviating poverty and fighting disease. Incredibly resilient, nature has been around for over 4.5 billion years, evolving and adapting to the whims of humankind, whereas people are fragile and reliant on what nature provides. Dr Sanjayan notes, “For too long, environmentalism and conservation have been focused on saving nature for its intrinsic value. We talk about enda ngered species a nd nat iona l parks, and worry about the state of the world’s coral reefs. We don’t really talk much about people except almost as an afterthought. In some instances, we’ve even allowed our efforts to be framed as favouring nature at the expense of people. But I have become frustrated with the view of nature as a fragile painting: a Sistine Chapel dripping with life, to be admired from afar and described in reverent tones. Sure, some people are drawn to this idea, but they are far outnumbered by the number of people negatively impacted by the rapidity with which we are stripping our forests, mining our soils, drying up our water and fundamentally altering our planet’s atmosphere and ocean’s chemistry. Love alone is not enough; we need this place.” Morris concludes by elaborating on CI’s future plans, “Scaling up our work with governments, businesses and local communities. Mother Nature is trying to take care of us, but we’re not show ing her enough respect. The world’s forests filter our air and maintain a stable climate, yet we have chopped down nearly half of them. Today, 842 million people across the globe do not have enough to eat, yet if we are to keep up with a population ba l loon ing from seven bi l l ion to nine billion by 2050, we will need to double our supply of food, water and energy. The challenges facing us are monumental. We must protect nature’s ability to provide our food, water and the air we breathe now and for generations to come. These aren’t just issues for the developing world. Nature is essential for all of us.” ً‫جميعا‬ ‫لوجودنــا‬ ‫األساســي‬ ‫العنصر‬ Amazonia - A new five-year project supported by the GEF will assess the vulnerability of the Chingaza- Sumapaz-Guerrero corridor, which provides water to the city of Bogotá, and implement adaptation actions to guarantee water regulation and provision to the city. © Luis Alejandro Bernal Romero.
