POSITION DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: DIRECTOR, MEMBERSHIP & EVENTS
REPORTS TO: EXECUTIVE VICE-PRESIDENT, AMES CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under minimal supervision, responsible for the development and effective deployment of a plan of work
to recruit and retain members of the Ames Chamber of Commerce. Membership is vital to the Chamber
and it will be incumbent upon the Director of Membership Development to implement a plan of work that
members respond to via events and an ambassadors program that engages existing members to support
the Chamber through member outreach opportunities. Additionally, this position is responsible for the
continuing development and execution of a successful Workforce Enhancement program for local
companies in the Ames area via a series of programming, events, and outreach.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND TASKS – MEMBERSHIP
1. Develops annual plan of work, including annual budget, for member recruitment and member
retention. This plan must include method for timely follow-up with prospects as well as
immediate outreach with new members to ensure smooth transition as businesses join the
Chamber. The plan must also include an annual sales campaign related to boosting membership
recruitment.
2. Coordinates a weekly member visitation schedule.
3. Develops plan of work for member thank you gifts and promotional items in partnership with the
Director of Sponsorships & Events and the Director of Communications & Marketing of the Ames
Chamber.
4. Coordinates and leads the following member events and programs: Ambassadors, Salute to
Educators Luncheon, ISU Orientation Resource Fair, New Member Brown Bags, and Member of
the Month.
5. Supports and assists with other member events: Business at Breakfast, Business After Hours,
Ribbon Cuttings, Golf Day, Steak Fry, Ames Day at the Capitol, Legislative Luncheons, Annual
Event.
6. Supports and maintains the Chamber member data via WebLink, in close and frequent
communication with the Vice-President of Finance & Operations.
7. Will actively use member reports via WebLink to support member retention efforts and highlight
benefits of Chamber benefits to our members.
8. Supports and works closely with the Executive Vice-President and the Director of Sponsorships
and Events of the Ames Chamber in fundraising opportunities to support the overall Chamber
plan of work.
INTERN/WORKFORCE PROGRAMMING:
1. Provide leadership in helping local companies with employee recruitment.
2. Develop an executive recruitment program for key positions at local companies and throughout
the community. This may include enlisting the help of Chamber or AEDC board members to assist
in community tours, etc.
3. Assist individuals with job placement as time allows.
4. Plan and coordinate various workforce attraction and retention marketing efforts and projects.
For example, ISU Career Fairs, Hire Our Heroes, etc.
5. Lead the implementation of the Summer Internship program, which will include promotion,
placement, and events throughout the summer to encourage students to look at Ames/Story
County as a place for employment after graduation.
6. Help coordinate and develop, as needed, job fairs for individual companies.
7. Maintain all data related to the Workforce Enhancement Initiative and maintain close
communication with the Executive Vice President of the AEDC since that position will work most
closely with all existing Story County industries.
8. Keep all other staff apprised of all aspects of the Workforce plan of work as this program as all
staff should be conversant with the programming related to this initiative.
9. Be an active member of the local Society of Human Resource Managers (SHRM) group along with
the Director of Story County Community Outreach & Government Relations.
10. All of the aforementioned items related to the Workforce Enhancement plan of work should be
done with the assistance and support of the Director of Story County Community Outreach &
Government Relations who will serve in a support role for the Workforce Enhancement Initiative.
11. Coordinates and implements the Annual Economic Outlook luncheon with support from the
Director of Story County Community Outreach & Government Relations.
 Contribute to the overall operation of the Ames Chamber of Commerce and Economic
Development Commission. May include answering telephones, reception, and some travel.
 Perform in a manner that strengthens the image of and promotes membership in the Ames
Chamber of Commerce.
Direct Reports: Intern for Workforce Enhancement
Access to shared Interns for Social Media; Graphic Design; Government Relations; Membership & Events
WORKING CONDITIONS:
This work is performed in a moderately noisy office environment. Work can stressful and
pressured by deadlines. Occasional travel may be required. May be asked to drive at
night or in inclement weather from time to time.
EFFORT:
Sitting for long periods of time at a desk. Constantly looking at a computer screen. Must
be able to see, hear, and speak. Filing, fingering and sorting is a usual activity. Must be
able to lift 25 pounds.
MACHINES, TOOLS, EQUIPMENT:
Computer, printer, calculator, photocopier, fax machine, telephone, and vehicle.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree preferred, but not essential. A combination of education and
experience may be substituted when proficiency is demonstrated.
Excellent organizational and administrative skills are essential to manage multiple
projects, as well as excellent communication skills. Must be able to work with deadlines
and must maintain a valid driver’s license.
Reasonable accommodations may be made to those who are able to perform the essential
duties of the job. The incumbent must be able to maintain the confidentiality of any
information he/she encounters.
SPECIALIZED SKILLS:
The incumbent must have computer skills. Experience with the following types of
software and/or Windows based applications is preferred: Microsoft Office products,
Internet and e-mail.

Director Membership and Events - POSITION DESCRIPTION
