What is the Rule of Thirds?
• It is a convention used in film and
photography to space out main points an
draw the viewer's eye to the main focus. A set
of nine boxes are placed as thirds, and the
point the photographer/cameraman wants
you to focus on will be on one of these lines.
• In the photos shown, a box has been put in to
show the thirds. The main point of focus has
been put on the intersection between one of
the horizontal lines and another vertical line.
This is often how it is shown.
Even professionals use this technique as seen in the Transformers 3 snapshot below...
From the biggest to the smallest every self respecting director, photographer and
cameraman has used it, to make the eye been drawn to the important things. This is
important as the lady is on an intersection of some grid lines while Optimus Prime,
Leader of the Autobots, Hero to Earth, is at the intersection of some more lines,
focusing the viewer’s eyes to the conversation
We used the rule of thirds to highlight the
figures and lined the bodies up with two of
the ‘Rule of Thirds’ lines. This drew attention
to the two people in the picture.
