  6. 6. PLAYFULCITIES By 2020 there will be an estimated 50 billion connected devices. +5 billion mobile phones. October 16 50% of the Internet traffic is Mobile. IoT sensors will trigger contextually-relevant, personalized content. AR and reactive environments will dominate. Pokemon Go was a first good test and learn. Further reading: pillowtalks.io and coming USC Engaging Cities Research New York pizzeria revenue jumped 75% The one unique thing about this game is that it requires players to go outside and search for the Pokémon characters. Essentially, it’s a virtual scavenger hunt.
  7. 7. While VR is driving new experiential formats, its penetration among consumers is expected to reach 6m in 2016 already through wired headsets (Oculus, HTC, Playstation). But we’re still discovering the language of this new media which will prove more and more immersive and social. Further Reading: pillowtalks.io, Strategic Note, UCLA Future of Storytelling Research Microsoft’s announcements of $299 mixed reality headsets, devices that can deliver anything from a virtual reality game to an augmented view of your living room, are a major reason behind Microsoft's investment in HoloLens. VIRTUALREALITY
  8. 8. Converging high end technologies (VR and eSports especially now) require physical environment to spread across audiences. Expand the live experience overtime and over platforms, similar to the golden age of Arcade Games in the late 70s. Further Reading: Strategic Note eSports arena in Orange County CA is the 1st ever dedicated arena for eSports competitions. 15,000 sq ft facility combines esports venue, community hub and production company LOCATION-BASED ENTERTAINMENT
  9. 9. The ever growing surplus of films, TV shows, video games and music limits the visibility of new content. Through human curation, as well as with the support of AI including recent chatbots developments, brands could help solve consumers quest for seamless experience. Further Reading: pillowtalks.io, upcoming UCLA UX/UI 2016 Research In 2009 Netflix launched the Netflix prize with $1 million in prize money inviting developers to create a recommendation system that could improve Netflix’s recommendations by up to 10%. CURATION PLATFORMS
  10. 10. “Speech has reached a tipping point in our society” - MIT. Voice control and conversational interfaces, powered by smart AI, will replace screens in computer-human interactions. What is the place for brands? Their voice and tone? Further Reading: pillowtalks.io, Strategic Note, upcoming UCLA UX/UI 2016 Research CONVERSATIONAL “INVISIBLE” UI Amazon tracks every interaction with Alexa, which also powers the Echo Dot and Amazon Tap. The percentage of interactions that are “nonutilitarian” is well into the double digits.
  11. 11. PREDICTIVE & PERSONALIZED CONTENT Real time personalization will create tailored serialized experiences for each user, integrating all the complexity of UX Design, from the interface to the Information Architecture. While AI will anticipate and deliver what the user will be most interested in at any moment. Further Reading: Sony CSL wants to use its system of machine-learning algorithms—which is named Flow Machines, and has been in development since 2012—to write and publish entire albums.
  12. 12. Cultural Industries are a Demand side economy solving customers issues. Consumers are increasingly turning to niche stories more relevant to their interests and discovering new formats proper to social platforms and their influencers, giving long tail content more importance. Franchises and mainstream IP are collapsing. Further reading: UCLA Future of Storytelling Research NICHE STORYTELLING & FORMATS The number of transgender characters had doubled to 16 this year. There was also a record high percentage of black characters on broadcast television, thanks mostly to shows like hip hop family drama "Empire," action-packed drama "Luke Cage," comedy "black-ish," and crime series "How To Get Away With Murder."
  13. 13. SOCIAL AND CAUSE MARKETING We are facing a shift from “Brand” to “Culture”, from a 2D to a multidimensional mode, where cultural connection with the audience is stronger. Causes are shared playground to be leveraged, solving consumers issues in a service design mindset. "Spent: Looking for Change," a documentary produced by Davis Guggenheim that shines a light on the millions of Americans shut out of the U.S. banking system.
