Website testing

How we will test the website (P5)
First of all we want the client to be involved and want them to make sure that
everything is right for them since the customer is always right, we would create a
sample for them to test not only to make sure that links are correct but also to make
sure the information is correct, relevant and isn’t too big or small for them. We would
ask for feedback on the design and make relevant changes. We would then consult the
staff, students and other clients as well as the Business Department head of the
website and give them access to a testing sample as they would be the common users.
The info that is used is provided from the client to make sure it is accurate, after the
information is added we would advise the client checks the content to further make
sure it is correct as they may have missed or thought of more information to add. This
is useful because it ensures that the client puts down what is relevant to them but it is
also a disadvantage if constant changes need to be made. We will maintain the
website provided that the client provides us with information to update it with we will
then test the website with acceptance testing, different technical environments,
connectivity and accessibility.
Acceptance testing
The first thing that needs to be addressed is the general use of the website, before we
go any further the website will need to be tested by users such as students, staff and
parents. It will need to be ensured that the website is easily usable and that the links
all work on the webpage. To do this we will send copies out to a select few to test the
website.
Technical environment
Many people use different browsers, the way the website has been laid out is
optimised for all browsers and will be tested before going live, the site has also been
optimised to fit to any screen size using “100%” as the width so it stretches the height
and width accordingly. However as some browsers do not use images and the website
is made purely of images it may be an issue so text alternatives will need to be made.
If we were to use java scripts such as live feed updates this wouldn’t work for all
visitors.
Connectivity
The website will be made so that people can connect within seconds, according to
statistics it takes four seconds of loading to deter a visitor and we aim to take under a
second. To do this images have been split up so rather than loading the whole thing at
once it will load in chunks which will increase the speed of loading. The website will

also be available through the LAN connection itself so that school computers have an
instant connection.
Accessibility testing
To test this when the site goes live we will address parents of students as well as staff
of the website and ask for feedback on how easy the website is to use and to make
sure everything is correct, this ensures that all links on all pages work correctly and
are optimised to work for that persons computer, this is the best way to make sure of
this as just doing it without others may produce a biased conclusion as we would
clearly want the website to be “outstanding”.
Evaluation (M2)
To evaluate the website, it has its advantages and disadvantages, the good thing is that
the website is optimised for all browsers and screen sizes, the links can easily be
adjusted to have mouse-over scripts that highlight when selected, the website links
can easily be changed at any time in the coding, the website fits with the colour
scheme of the school and the latest news can easily be shown either manually or the
use of scripts. The bad things are that the website is made purely of images, even the
text, this means that a user that can’t see images due to a browser issue will not be
able to use the website at all, the information cannot be changed with coding and has
to be changed manually by reworking the website, this is easy for the designer but
means the client cannot do it themselves. The website will also not work too well on
certain web browsers that have restrictions such as compatibility view.
Future improvements
We would like to change the fact the website is a bunch of images in a table so it has a
variant used for browsers that don’t show images, we would like the website to be
more accessible from mobiles, possibly with a mobile website, we would like the
website to be more easily updatable for the client, we would like the website to make
use of scripts for live news and mouse over functions. Finally we would like to add
more pages to the website such as pages about courses and other Business Department
related pages.
