2. Research
Through out my research I came across a lot of useful information which has
helped me develop my final major project. At the start of research I began to
explore different poetry books so that I could understand the conventions that I
needed to include in mine when it came to production. To begin with I explored
Rupi Kaurs poetry book as this was the main poet I am focusing on. Rupi Kaurs
style for her poetry was very hand written and basic. The aspect I really wanted
to grasp for Rupi Kaurs book was strong illustrations which represent a power
style. From looking to Rupi Kaurs work I discovered that she only using lower
case words to present her poetry in. This is because she likes to view every
single letter as equal. This also allows people to read the poem in the tone they
want to. This is an aspect I considered when it came to production as I didn’t
want to sway to much away from tradition. The second book I looked at was a
Dr.Seuss book. This is because Dr.Seuss books mainly concentrate on bold
colours and powerful illustrations. From this I learnt that every single book had a
different colour scheme but the style of drawing was always the same. The style
of illustrations look very hand drawn as well as digitalized which is an aspect
which I wanted to grow and work on for a Rupi Kaur Fanzine. An aspect I realised
about the Dr.Seuss books is that the font is very basic. This is an aspect I was
exploring with through out production which made it interesting to see how others
did this. I feel like the basic font for the Dr.Seuss books works effectively due to
how busy the illustrations looks. The font helps settle it down and makes the book
less overwhelming for the audience. This is something I looked at changing with
mine due to making the don’t swirly and awkward to read.
3. Research
Another aspect I covered in my research was audience research. For this I
explored different media platforms because If I was going to produce my
work, the best way to get my work out there would be to post it on social
media. This is because my target audience for my project is 18-29 years old
females. From researching into Rupi Kaur I discovered she became famous
through instagram and tumblr. This shows that her main audience is 18-29
year olds. From researching into instagram the main attraction for this social
media is millennials and females. This tells me that if I was to post my
production work anywhere it would be best to do this on instagram. This is
because it would reach a wider audience as well as hitting my primary target
audience. From this, it lead me to conduct a few interviews with people of
this age group. A lot of them knew who Rupi Kaur was which expressed to
me that Rupi Kaurs work really applies to this audience. They expressed to
me that the poems were relatable which is what appeals them to her work.
From this, I have taken their advice on board and picked her most popular
poems. However, I have turned the style around by making it more
personalised to me. The colours used and the poems picked are relatable
and effective for this target audience. This makes my research helpful
because it has helped me achieve a successful piece of work for my target
audience. One thing I could improve on in my research is continuing to
research into the audience. This may allow my production to become more
effective, but I feel like my final project is good and well put together.
4. Planning
Through out my planning I encountered many issues as I found this
section difficult. I found this difficult because through out production I
kept changing my plan and editing it to make it better. However, some
aspects worked really well with my planning. For example: I created a
page that helped me express what illustrations I could use/do for
different poems. This helped me a lot when it came to production
because it have me a guideline to follow and from there I developed it
further. This worked well because it made my time more effective and
allowed me to develop my work further, causing my work to be a high
standard. The only issue with this section was I had to keep revisiting
it. This is because I decided to change a few poems through out
production. This is because the illustrations and my ideas for them
weren't ambitious enough. This did lead to my time managements
being effected because I had to re think a few ideas to make them
relevant through out my whole poetry fanzine. This change in poetry
effected my Colour Scheme as well as my running order. This was
because my original plan was to do half black backgrounds and half
white. However, as I went through production I discovered that my
work was better when it has a white background. This is because the
work was more detailed and effective. This again changed my poetry
and running order because the poetry became less dark and more
positive. This again effected the colour scheme because I began to
develop this further through out production. This was so the colour
scheme was consistent and helped show a clear indication that my
work was linked together.
5. Planning
As you can see I encountered many issues through out my planning which
made this section difficult for me. However, I showed my development and my
though progress through out. As you can see from the screenshots I have
displayed a piece of work which was completely scrapped from my plan. This is
because it wasn’t ambitious enough for my project. This shows I could of done
with experimenting more before I started my project, but I did manage to do
experiments through out production. This is because I made a lot of
improvements and learnt a lot of new skills whilst developing my work. Even
though this was more time consuming, I still managed to produce a high
standard level of work. From changing the poems and background colour idea I
had to change my running order. This meant I had to re visit all the poems I had
chosen and reflected to make sure there was a consistent theme through out my
work. I then narrowed the themes down to, love, feminism and nature. From this,
it allowed me to reflect on my colour scheme choice. From this i discovered that
pastel colours would work well for presenting my work. This is because it helps
show a sensitive side to my work. However, as I developed this further I realised
adding one bold colour added more meaning to the illustrations and the poetry.
This is because it helped highlight the important aspects that I was wanting my
audience to reflect on. I have also had to make sure the same pastel colours
were used through out. For example: if I used a pink, I made sure the same
pastel pink appeared through out my production. Overall, I feel like my planning
could be better. However, I did keep reflecting and developing my planning
which I feel like encouraged me to make my work as effective as possible.
6. Missed Opportunity
Through out my project, I encountered a few missed opportunity's which would have helped improve my
effectiveness of my work. One section I feel like this happened in was my research section. I feel like for my
research I could have expanded on researching into feminism more and explored identity through time. I feel like
this would have helped shaped my project because it would have made me think about what illustrations would
represent the poems I chose effectively. It would also allow me to have a more in-depth look into the history which
would have influenced my work more. This is because I would have had a better understanding of feminism and
why this theme is so important in history. This would have allowed me to explore different illustrations, colours and
styles which could have effectively made my work more effective. Another opportunity I think I missed was doing
more experiments before production. This is because I feel like I should have experimented with drawing. This was
a style I should have explore more because through out research, Rupi Kaurs poetry books do contain hand drawn
pictures. This would have allowed me to incorporate this style into my illustrations which would have still followed
Rupi Kaurs traditional style. This could have potential of taken my illustrations to the new level. However as i
developed my own style through out, i did use a lot of the paint brush and pencil tools on photoshop. This allowed
me to still make my designs hand drawn but also made them more robotic. However, i could have explored with
scanning drawn photos in on the computer and this would have allowed me to look at different effects which could
have potentially made my work more interesting. Another missed opportunity I should have explore more was
playing with font more. This was because whilst producing I was trying to follow a David Carson style. However,
because my designs and font chose didn’t follow his style this ended up failing. I feel like this was a missed
opportunity because it would have allowed me to pursue my original plan. However, the traditional lay out of the font
works effectively too.
7. Time Management
Through out my final major project, I have had a few ups and downs with my time management skills. This has been mainly
because my planning and the amount of develops I carried through out this project. However, my time managements for my
research was great. This is because I made sure I did all my research to a good standard before moving onto planning. This
helped me grasps a good idea on what I wanted my project to look like. However, with my planning and developments this
caused a delay. I struggled with my planning because I kept reflect back and forth from this through out production. This lead for
me to change a few of my ideas due to discovering what style worked best for my project. For example: my original idea was to
do half the fanzine being black background and half white. However, as I developed my production work I came to terms with the
fact my white background work was more effective and reflected my style more. I also felt like with the white background the
colour scheme could be more adventurous. From making this change it made my work more consistent and more effective. This
is because I felt like I could add more delicate details in my illustration work instead of making it so bold and basic. This again
effected my colour scheme because I could be more versatile with this. This is because when you have a bold background It
makes the colour scheme limited because pastel colours would look odd on a black background. However, even though this
made my overall work more effective it postponed time through out production. I also had to develop my illustrations through out
which postponed my production time. This is because I was still trying to find my own individual design when it came to
production. This is because I wanted to make my work unique and personal to me. I feel like once I achieved this, it became
easier to achieve through out my whole fanzine. However, it took me a few weeks into production to find my style. After this, I had
to consider if the font was effective. After looking over my work, I decided to make the font basic rather then all over the place.
This is because I realised simplicity with the font made the illustrations more effective. It also made my work more effective. I
discovered this through my research into the Dr.Seuss books. I do feel like my time was managed well overall, but I do feel like I
had a few hiccups on the way which lead for me to take longer then expected on a few sections of my work. Even though this was
time consuming, I feel like it has made my work as effective as it can be.
8. Emotional Reflection
Through out my final major project I have encountered a large amount of emotion. This has been from happy to frustration. To
begin with, I felt excited about getting on with the project because its exciting creating whatever project you are wanting to. This
made the research enjoyable because I began to explore a project I wanted to develop and become knowledgeable in.
However, as I hit the planning the work became harder. This is because I had to plan colour scheme and make sure the poems
I chose were accurate to the style and image I was wanting to present. I struggled with my planning which did effect my
production when the time came. The most frustration I have felt with the whole project was with my production. This is because
I had to keep re doing and experimenting further to make sure my illustrations and font style was up to standard. This caused
stress because I began to worry that I would be short on time and wouldn’t finish when I wanted to. I had to do a lot of
improvements through out my work which did postpone a large chunk of my time. I also changed a few of the poems I chose
because I felt like I wouldn't do them justice with my illustrations. This meant I had to keep reflecting going back to my planning
and editing the colour scheme and poetry. This is because it helped show a clear plan of what I was wanting to achieve and it
helped structure me.
After this, I decided I needed to develop my work as I hadn't found my individual style yet. This was discovered as I went
through production which meant I had to keep changing my illustrations to make them better and consistent.
After improving my illustration and font I felt relieved. This is because It became a hassle to keep developing my work.
However, this development has allowed my work to be more effective which has allowed my progression and final product
worth it. Overall, I have had my ups and downs in this project but I feel like I’ve managed my time and stress well.
9. Technical Qualities
Through out my final project I came across many issues with the technical side of my work. This was from photoshop files being too large,
to work being corrupted and the issues with accuracy to use software accurately. However, I did discover new skills which allowed my
work to be positive. Even though I feel like my work is strong, I came across many hurdles through out. The first hurdle I came across
with production was when I was creating my illustrations for a page of my poetry, the page became 2GB large. This cause many issues
with photoshop because I had too many layers opened on my work. This caused photoshop to crash which made me lose half of my
illustration work. I feel like I could of approached this situation differently. I would of made sure the folder wasn’t so big so that the file
didn’t crash. I would of also made sure I saved my work regularly so it doesn’t cause issues like this again. After re constructing my work, I
linked layers together which allowed the size of the file to shrink. This allowed the file not to be faulty and made my production time speed
up. I have learnt from this that I need to be more thorough with saving my work incase issues like this occur again. Another issue that I
encountered was using the software and accuracy. Through out my whole project I have been improving my production drastically to
achieve the best results in the end. To start with, my illustrations were basic, very similar to already existing designs and basic. This was
because I hadn’t explored photoshop enough to develop a unique and individual design. This lead for me to experiment with different
brush tools. This is because the brush tools added textures to my work which added depth and allowed my illustrations to become more
ambitious. This is one aspect which I felt like worked really well and I feel like it helps me develop my work perfectly. This allowed me to
add textures in hair and add more depth throughout. From this, I began to develop my own sticker tools on photoshop. I discovered how
to do this by researching a tutorial on youtube. The shape I was wanting to create was a leaf shape, so I created two different ones. The
first one was just an outlined leaf and the second leaf was a fully filled shape. This difference allowed me to add texture to my work. It also
allowed my work to be even more unique and personalised to my style because I wasn’t using a generic shape that everyone can use.
This has been added to a few of my illustrations and has been proven to be effective. Another aspect I improved on was my use of the
pen tool. This helped me gain a accurate outline for my illustrations before I decided to fill them in and add more detail to them. I learnt
how to use this tool round a bend corner. This allowed my work to become less square shaped and smoother round the edges. The use
of this made all of my work improve. This was because it allowed me to improve my accuracy which was an issue I struggled with before.
Overall, I have encountered a mixture of both good and bad issues with the technical side of my work. However, I overcame every hurdle
which allowed me to achieve an effective piece of production.
10. Aesthetic Qualities
Title:
The title of my poetry fanzine is ‘Rupi Kaur Poetry’. This is because I wanted to make it clear
that the poetry in the book is Rupi Kaurs. I’ve chosen the font I have for the Front Cover
because I feel like it gives off a robotic but also a hand drawn feel. This helps reflect that the
illustrations within the book are a similar theme to this. I’ve positioned it at the bottom of the
page because my main focus for this book was to concentrate on illustrations. This is why the
title has been surrounded by them and it explains why I have made the front cover busy.
Illustrations/Colour Scheme:
The illustrations I have included on the front cover are bold and powerful. This is because I didn't’t want to make
the front cover subtle. I also wanted to make it controversial and bold so that people question what the poetry
book is about. The illustrations on the front also represent the themes that are within the book. For example:
woman empowerment, nature and peace. These three themes are all positive and I felt like they were most
relevant to me as I wanted to make this project as personal as possible. I’ve included my own individual style
which you will see all through out my fanzine. This is the dotted line technique which adds depth to the
illustrations. I feel like this little detail adds a more hand drawn effect to my overall work. This allows my work to
be detailed but not too complex. This adds to the boldness. I have chosen bold colours for the front cover
because this is the page that is going to intrigue the audience to read it. I have chosen bright blues and pinks
because I feel like they are the stereotypical colours used to display genders. I chose them because I wanted it
to be controversial so that it makes the audience feel emotive. This could either make them angry or it’ll allow
the audience to clearly see what the theme is through out the whole poetry fanzine. I’ve also used blues and
greens to add to the nature and peace aspects of the poetry. This is because green is a typical colour for nature.
Where as, blue is a peaceful and calm colour. This allows the front cover to contrast and clash due to the bold,
dominate colours mixed with the pastel blue. This contrast allows the front cover to be bold, making it more
appealing to my target audience. One aspect I would improve is making the illustrations more interesting. This
would allow each illustrations to be more prestige and effective.
11. Aesthetic Qualities
Font:
The font I have used to display the poetry is basic and simple. This is because traditional poetry is displayed
with a basic format. Also, this font gives a robotic and hand written effect which links with the illustrations more.
I’ve positioned the font around the mouth of the woman because it looks as If she is speaking the poetry. This
allows the poetry to intertwine with the illustrations. I’ve used lower case because that’s how Rupi Kaur sets her
work out. This is so all the letters are equal to each other. This is why I have also laid the poetry out how Rupi
Kaur would so that it reflects her views combines with mine.
Illustrations/Colour Scheme:
The illustrations used for this poem created a statement. I decided to use the silhouette of a woman because to
me the poem represents loving yourself. For this illustration I included my own individual style again with the
dotted lines everywhere. This has allowed my work to be more detailed and effective. This effect makes the
woman look like she has veins over her body which are allowing the nature to keep flourishing around her. I
have used pencil and paint tools to get the effect of her hair. I did this by using different stroke textures to
create a beautiful, vine effect to the hair. This links into the nature theme I have gone for here. I’ve also included
in depth flowers because I feel like this helps empathises the use of nature. This is why I have chosen to use a
bolder colour here. I have gone for a pink and green colour scheme because this poem reflect two different
themes; Woman empowerment and nature. The pinks are there to show passion. I have used a pastel shade
on her body to show the delicacy and elegance. I have then used a bright pink to display the flowers. This
contrast lets the audience become immediately intrigued by the flowers. This is attraction is also added with the
unusual textures in the hair. The greens are used to display environment and fertility. This is why I have used
two different shades of green because it helps display this image further. Another aspect I feel like is a nice
touch is the background. The background is covered in stickers of leafs. I created this shape on Photoshop so
that it added to my own individual design. I also felt like this was more personalised then using a sticker already
on Photoshop. For the stickers I used green because I feel like the combination of greens and pinks work well
together. This is because pink represents love and green represents fertility. This allows the poem to easily be
linked to the illustration.
12. Aesthetic Qualities
Font:
The font I have used is consistent with the font used through out. This font used is basic
and simple because that links with traditional poetry. I have chosen this font because it
displays both a hand written and robotic effect. This allows the font to link in with the
illustrations. The lay out of the poetry is how Rupi Kaur lays her work out. I’ve stuck with
this tradition as it shows how she wants the poetry to be viewed. I have also stayed using
lower case through out because Rupi Kaur believes all the letters should be equal.
Illustrations/Colour Scheme:
I have chosen these illustrations because I feel like they are relevant with the poem. I have
chosen to do an illustration of the sun because it symbolises the rise and fall of a day. I have
used different shades of colours to create an in depth version of the sun. This has allowed a
geometric, 3D effect to come through. I have again included my own individual signature
with the dotted lines. This allows the illustrations to seem more hand drawn as well as
digitally made. With this page I have concentrated on using a variety of different colours to
make the illustrations more in depth. Another effect I have used with the illustration is
changing the transparency. This is because it made the colours more pastel and this linked
better with the whole theme of my fanzine through out. This also made the illustrations less
harsh, making the overall effect better. I chose to use blues and yellow/oranges because it
is easily identified by the audience as what they are representing. The blues add a calming
effect to the whole piece which is feel is relevant with the pastel theme I have used through
out. However, you can tell that the sun is the main attraction. This is because I have
included more bold colours so that the audience is easily intrigued by this.
13. Aesthetic Qualities
Font:
The font used on this pages has been used through out my whole poetry fanzine. This has
allowed consistency through out. The font is delicate, hand drawn and robotic which adds
to the style of my illustrations. Through out production I experimented with different font
styles and positioning and I feel like this works best. This is because its simple and follows
the simple rules of traditional poetry. The lay out of the poetry is how Rupi Kaur lays her
work out, which shows I am sticking to the writers views on how this poem should of
displayed. This is why I haven't included any capital letters in my work. This is to follow the
traditions of Rupi Kaur.
Illustrations/Colour Scheme:
I have chosen these illustrations for this poem because I felt like nature was a great
way of showing abandonment. This is why I decided to shows two sides of a tree. One
beautiful and blossomed and the other decayed and miserable. For the texture on the
tree I used different brushes and strokes to create a detailed bush like effect. The
flowers I have layered on top of each other to get a 3D effect. This drastic pop of
colour also adds more depth to the illustration. The leaves scattered all around the
illustrations is a creation of a tool I created on photoshop. I created my own sticker
because I felt like it made my work more unique and individual to my person style.
This worked effective. I did two different stickers to add depth. I created leaves with
just the outline and then vice versa. This allowed more depth and character to be
added to the illustrations. The colour scheme I went for here was greens because
green connotates harmony and self care. These two values are important for this
poem. I also added purple flowers because it shows ambition and power which I feel
like reflects the poem. I do feel like I could improve on the grass section of the
production. This is because I could of experimented more with different depths of
greens.
14. Aesthetic Qualities
Font:
The font I have used for this illustration is the same font I have used through
out. I have chosen this font because it is both digital and hand drawn. This
helps link In with my illustrations adding to the effect of them. I have also set
the poetry out how Rupi Kaur has to respect her views on her poetry. I have
also kept all my work lower case because Rupi Kaur believes all letters
should be equal. This is why she incorporates this into her own poetry.
Illustrations/Colour Scheme:
The illustrations I have used for this poem is to help reflect the poetry. I
have chosen to create a sunflower because it connotes loyalty. I feel like
this works well with the sun because they are loyal to each other to help
each other grow. I also felt like the colours of yellow should be powerful in
this piece, which allowed me to experiment with different levels of yellows.
For this illustrations I went with a more abstract style. For this I used the
paint brush tool and created different depths to allow the piece to be
effective. However, I also added my dotted effect to the leafs so that the
style is still consistent. I have also used different brush tools in this
illustrations to create depth. For example: the mud In the plant brush is a
different texture to the plant pot. This allows my illustrations to be more
interesting because of how abstract it is. One thing I would improve on this
illustration is looking at a different way of presenting it.
15. Aesthetic Qualities
Font:
The font I have used here I have used through out. This font is basic,
hand drawn and robotic at the same time. This works in effectively with
my illustrations. I have also used all lower case letters to stick with the
traditions of Rupi Kaur. This is because she likes all the letters to be
equal because that’s a theme she is strong about.
Illustrations/Colour Scheme:
The illustrations I have included on this page is to illustrate peace. This
is because the poem reflects the world become full of hate and being
possessive. This is why I have included a lot of greens in this post. This
is because It shows jealousy. This works well with the world because
it’s a contrasting meaning. This is because the green represents
jealousy and the earth represents peace. This contrast allows the
poem to be more effective. The earth also links into the front cover
which allows symbolises to be included through out my pages. This
consistency allows the fanzine to become more effect. I’ve included
bold red flags on the earth because it shows possession. The spikes
included underneath the flags make the flag seem more like a weapon
which is reflecting the destructive side to this illustration. This again
helps make the poem more powerful as the illustrations display
different themes. I have also included my dotted lines in this illustration
which allows the style to be consistent through out my whole fanzine.
16. Aesthetic Qualities
Font:
The font I have used is the same through out the fanzine. I have
chosen a robotic but hand drawn effect so that it links in with my
illustrations. I have also used all lower case for the poetry as Rupi Kaur
does this in hers. This is due to her wanting all the letters equal.
Illustrations/Colour Scheme:
The illustrations I have used for this poem is symbolic towards the
poem. I included a human heart as I felt like this was a powerful section
of the poem so I wanted to make it the main attraction. That is why I
made the heart bright red with some depth. This is why the heart looks
detailed and veiny. I have included flowers surrounding the heart
because I wanted the heart to seem like the source of life. Also, it
shows growth which reflects the poem. I have also put the heart in a
test tube because it gives the impression of experimentation. This
again reflects the ’heart’ being played and messed with. I chose a
mixture of colours here. This is because the mix of colours give a calm
but powerful feel to the piece. This again helps link into the poem. I
have also included different styled flowers which I feel grasps a
abstract feel to this piece. This is because it allows the audience to
interact with the piece more. This is because the audience will prefer
different styles.
17. Aesthetic Qualities
Font:
This is the same font I have used through out my whole fanzine. It is basic,
hand written and robotic. This allows the font to link into the illustrations. I
have used all lower case letters because this is what Rupi Kaur does in her
work.
Illustration/Colour Scheme:
The illustrations I have used for this poem is mainly represented by colour
as well as illustrations. The colours are important here because it helps
reflect the change in each character. The grey character represents lonely
and the pink represents finding yourself. I’ve used pinks here because it’s
a passionate colour. I’ve also used a variety of colours for the butterfly
because It represents the growth in character and a consistent flow of
processing through life. I have included my dotted line signature which has
been shown through out the whole of my fanzine. This has allowed the
illustrations to be unique in there own way by linking the illustrations
together so the fanzine flows better. One thing I feel like I could improve on
here is the graphics of the woman. I feel like I could make them more
interesting but I do feel like the woman are displayed in a way that makes
the butterflies stand out more. This is something I was wanting to achieve.
18. Aesthetic Qualities
Font:
The font used on this page has been used through out the whole of the
fanzine. This has a robotic but hand written effect to it which makes the
overall font link in with the illustrations. Again, I have used all lower case
letters because Rupi Kaur has expressed she does this because she likes all
the letters to be equal. I thought it would be best if I stuck to this tradition.
Illustrations/Colour Scheme:
The illustrations I have used for this poem are symbolic. I have included
a illustration of some lips because I feel like it symbolises how words
can hurt/heal. This is why I’ve included flowers and petals because I feel
like it helps add to the delicacy. The blue petals surrounding the lips
represent the ‘drowning’ aspect of the poetry. This allows the illustration
to look like water but its actually a petal. This shows two different
meanings for this aspect. I’ve also included the same style of dotted
lines that I have through out my heart. This has allowed my work to be
consistent and unique as it shows my individual style throughout. The
one thing i would improve on this illustration is making the teeth seem
more interesting. This is because they could do with looking more
detailed. However, this might not work.
19. Aesthetic Qualities
Font:
The font used on this page has been the same font used through out.
This is because It shows consistency. I have also used a hand written
but robotic style of writing because it helps link into my illustrations
better. I have also stuck with using lower case letters because Rupi
Kaur believes that each letter should be equal.
Illustrations/Colour Scheme:
The illustrations I have used for this poem is powerful. This is
because I feel like this power shows a powerful messages that
should be represented with a powerful illustration. I have made a
illustration of a womans face so that its clear that this is about
woman. The powerful side of the picture is including the guns and
bullets. This is because these items are aggressive and will instantly
tell the audience there is danger in the illustrations. I have then
added blush on her cheeks but made them look like blood. This is to
give the effect of a damaged soul. I’ve used pinks because I believe
them to represent passion. This links into the front cover with the
bright pinks. This allows the illustration to be controversial which is
what I was aiming to do. This is because it will help anger the
audience, adding to the passion shown in this illustration.
20. Aesthetic Qualities
Font:
The font used on this page has been used through out my whole fanzine.
This font is robotic and hand written which helps link into the style of my
illustrations. I have used all lower case letters because Rupi Kaur likes
the letters all being equal to each other.
Illustrations/Colour Scheme:
The illustrations I have used on this are relevant to the poetry. I chose
to illustrate an eye because I feel like the poem is about memories. To
me the eye is symbolic of this journey because it links with the
expression ‘eyes are the window to the soul’. This is why I have made
the eyes look wavy because by adding different depths it shows
different adventures and stories. This links to the poem because the
eye is mesmerizing. I’ve added flowers in because there's a
consistent theme with nature. I also feel like this poem concentrates
on aspects like weddings and family. This is why I’ve bunched a few
flowers together. I’ve chosen blue because its calming which makes
this section mesmerizing. I’ve used a combination of orange flowers
because it represents happiness and determination. All these colours
represent the mood of the poem.
21. Aesthetic Qualities
Font:
The font used on the back cover is the same font used through out the
book. It is simple, robotic and hand drawn which makes the overall
appearance link with the style of illustration. The only difference with the
back page is the poetry adds the authors name on the end. This is
because as the book finishes people should remember the writer of the
poems that have been selected.
Illustrations/Colour Scheme:
The illustrations I have include on the back page is a graphic version
of Rupi Kaur. I felt like this would be a good way of ending the book
because its puts the face to the author of the poetry displayed in the
fanzine. I have included some main features of Rupi Kaur so that she
is easily recognised. For example: the red lipstick is a signature for
Rupi Kaur. I have also included my own individual style with the use
of the dot work again. This adds a more hand drawn effect to her. I
have also included a branch in blue and pink surrounding the
background. This is to help the back cover link with the front cover.
The use of the blues and pinks helps display the colour scheme
through out the fanzine.
22. Production Summary
Through out production I have come across many challenges and many successes. My intention at the start of
the project was to create a book/fanzine on a poets work. I feel like my end product has reflected my intentions
clearly showing I have achieved this.
I have achieved finding my own individual style through out production which has been a vital part of making
my work effective. This has also made my work unique and makes the project a lot more personalised to me
which I feel like was an important part of my project. I found this unique style by developing my production
work. This has lead for many illustrations to be changed and ideas. However, I did come across a few negative
aspects whilst in production.
Whilst producing I had the intent of incorporating David Carson inspired work. After creating weird fonts and
making it flow differently, I decided that this was definitely not the most effective way of approach my work.
This lead for me to change the font idea to a traditional poetry setting making the font more basic. I have also
had to change the colour scheme through out which has caused a few issues. This is because I needed to
make sure the theme of colour was consistent through out the whole of the fanzine. This has allowed my work
to flow better causing my work to become more linked. However, this did effect a few pieces of work. This
meant I had to re do certain layers because the layers were linked on photoshop. This added to my time
management by postponing time. One aspect that changed through out was my concept that was written at
the beginning of the project. I wanted to go with a more David Carson inspired piece of work. However, after
researching and reflecting, a more basic approach was more effective.
Overall, the finished product of my production is effective. This is because everything is consistent through
out causing the production to be an complex and detailed piece of work.
23. Production Comparison
As you can see from the photos on the left this is the layout of Rupi Kaur poetry
book. This is comparison to my final product, is drastically different. This is
because my front cover is very busy and bold. Where as, Rupi Kaurs poetry book
is simple but effective. I feel like for what I was wanting to achieve that the busy
front cover works well. This is because i was mainly trying to concentrate on the
illustrations rather than the poetry. This is because my main goal was to discover
my own individual design which i feel like i did achieve through out this project.
However, the one thing i feel like links together is the hand drawn effect to the
illustrations. I tried to explore this on photoshop because i wanted to add a
personal twist to my work but because i feel like it reflects Rupi Kaurs work more
effectively. This is because i see poetry as delicate because it’s personal to every
individual. Also, i kept with this style because my target audience is females ages
18-22 years. Rupi Kaurs work appeals to this audience which is why i wanted to
explore the illustrations being hand drawn as much as possible. This is because of
how unique it is for a poetry book to contain illustrations.
Through out production I did explore different font selections. This was because I wanted to explore a David Carson inspired work. However
this didn’t work which allowed me to go back to the traditional side to poetry. From this, I followed the same guidelines Rupi Kaur did. This is
why throughout the whole fanzine that I have created, I have stuck to all lower case because this is something Rupi Kaur does in her poetry.
I have used a simple font in my own work because I wanted to explore illustration more. However, even though the font was simple it was
swirly because it added more interest and linked into my style a lot nicer. Overall, I feel like Rupi Kaurs original work is effective because it
suits what she was wanting to achieve. Her book is unique compared to the poetry books and her goal is to concentrate on the poetry.
Where as, mine is effective as well because i was wanting to concentrate on illustrations and finding a style which would work well but also
reflect my own individuality. This is why both of these pieces of work is effective. I did feel like I could of improved on my front cover and
maybe explores doing a more simple page. However, it is effective because it is bold and it definitely makes a statement. Where as, Rupis
book is very symbolic which is shown through out. This is because you easily identify her book with the bumble bee.
24. Final Concept/Proposal
Through out this project I had a goal and a final concept which I was wanting to achieve. This goal was to discover my
own individual design and to create a book or fanzine with illustrations on poetry. I also wanted to explore David Carson
designs so that I could incorporate it into my work. I feel like I did achieve what I wanted to but I also didn’t with a few
aspects. I feel like I achieved finding my own individual design. This did prove a challenge and it did become stressful to
discover this. This is because I should have explored this before I began production because it added a lot of time onto
production. This is because I didn’t discover my own style until half way through. However, I did achieve this in the end
which did cause my work to be more effective and even more personal. Another aspect I achieved was to create a
fanzine on Rupi Kaurs poetry. This worked effectively because I explore illustrations which is what I was wanting to
develop. This is because I wanted to further my knowledge on photoshop and other pieces of software. This is because I
am wanting to expand my knowledge as much as possible as this is something I am passionate about. With this project it
has helped me develop my knowledge and my own style which is the main goal of this project. One aspect I feel like
didn’t live up to my final concept and proposal was wanting to explore David Carson in more depth. I wanted to explore
typography in this project as well. However, I feel like I should have experimented with this before production started. This
is because as I was going through production, I tried too hard to make the font qwerky and weird. However, this made my
work look messy and attracted a lot of the attention off the illustrations that I had created. This is why i decided to go back
to traditional lay out and font choice. This allowed my work to be mainly illustration based. This is why I worked the poems
around my graphics. Overall, i feel like i mainly followed what my initial plan was. This has allowed my final concept to
reflect my original idea. This did change with the David Carson inspired designs, but i feel like the overall project was
successful. The main reason for this is because my work is consistent with font, colour scheme and style. I have explored
my own style which makes my work unique and i feel like this has contributed to making my work successful.
25. Audience Appeal
Whilst planning and researching, I concluded that my target audience is females aged between 18-24 years. From
conducting three interviews, I discovered that my target audience discovered Rupi Kaur through social media. This meant
the work I produced needed to be effective on social media as this would be the best platform to advertise my work on.
They also suggested that what appealed them to the poet was the poetry itself. This is because the themes she displays
through out her two poetry books are relevant to todays issues. The themes being about: feminism, peace and religion. All
these factors remain relevant to todays society. From this I thought the best way to display Rupi Kaurs work is by making it
very visual. This is why I stuck with a basic font format, even though I did experiment with using David Carson. I mainly
concentrated on presenting my illustrations as bold and relevant. This is why I included a mix of pastel and bold colours.
This is so the poetry links into the illustrations more effectively. The bold colours help highlight the important parts of the
illustration which instantly allows the audience to identify the poems by the bold symbols used. For example: I have used
butterflies in one of them because it is about growing and flourishing. Also, pastel colours add a more subtle and sensitive
side to the overall effect. This tends to appeal more to females as its more relatable. This is also why I’ve included a lot of
pinks because it’s a controversial colour for females. This intrigues females as it represents passion. Where as, males tend
to enjoy the brighter and bold colours. My illustrations does cater for this, but my main target audience is females. This is
why it mainly caters for them. The font I decided to use was a swirly but simple font. This is because I wanted to achieve a
robotic but hand drawn effect to the overall design. The use of a swirly font adds elegance to the work which females tend
to relate to more. This is why the font mainly caters for females. However, due to the font being robotic it appeals to males
too. This is because its more simple and bold. Overall, I have taken my target audiences advice on board and I feel like it
has helped make my work effective as possible. This is why I have done thorough research into the most popular poems
and the most relatable ones to appeal to my audience better. If I could change one aspect of my work it would be to
experiment more with the illustrations. This is so I could try and make them more appealing to the male audience. This
would allow my audience to be more versatile.
