Summary
In low-income communities, many children have no access to quality childcare.
Families who can’t afford good childcare have to settle for overcrowded, low-
quality daycares where the childcare providers are more interested in making
money than providing the care these children need.
Because childcare costs are so high, these same children often go hungry even
as their parents struggle to provide for them. After school, latchkey kids in these
communities go home to empty homes, alone and vulnerable. Many of these kids
become high school dropouts or, worse, juvenile defenders.
According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, children from
low-income families are more likely to engage in risky, violent behaviors than
children from middle-income homes.

What’s the problem?
You have a dream to open an educational commercial childcare center with a
mission to serve children from low-income families. In order to realize this dream,
you need a few things, including a location, a business plan, a daycare license, and
a plan for funding.
At this moment, your most promising lead for a location has fallen through.
Without a location, you can’t complete the daycare licensing process. Without a
daycare license, you can’t develop a comprehensive business plan. And without a
business plan, you will be hard-pressed to secure funding through grants, loans,
or investors.
Obviously, without funding, there is no facility. There is no curriculum, no Spanish
program, no family meetings. There are no Little Wings or Little Angels or Little
Footprints. Sadly, without money—there is no Destani’s Daycare.
What’s the solution?
Fortunately, we have a plan.
In these pages, we have laid out a comprehensive solution to all of these problems
with one goal in mind: getting your doors open. We’ve thought critically through
all stages of this process to bring you location options, a developed business plan,
a procedure for securing a daycare license, and suggestions for finding funding.
Through all of it, we’ve kept your autonomy as a businesswoman in mind. By
prioritizing your integral role in the leadership of this business, we have developed
these things as tools at your disposal. Once you fulfill the requirements of our
plan, you can do with the results what you will. In the end, it’s totally up to you.

Creating a Business Plan
No matter what funding method you decide to pursue, a business plan will be
essential to obtaining those funds. Investors and financiers will want to see a
thought-out, well-developed plan for how the business will function and where it
will go. You need to be able to give them the story of your business so that they
can believe in your dream as much as you do.
Building a Plan
Your business plan helps sell your dream to the people who can make it a reality. It is
important that you use this document to set yourself apart from your competition
and convey your passion for childcare.
Your business plan should have the following sections:

To aid you in creating your business plan, we have provided an interactive business
plan template in the digital appendix (3business-plan/template.pdf). This template
is tailored to Destani’s Daycare and its needs, and it will guide you through every
step of writing your business plan.
Plan of Operation
Your vision for local children and families in South Dallas is life-changing, and
our goal is for you to build a strong foundation that will sustain your business
for many years to come. Our plan includes features like government subsidies
programs to keep the cost of tuition down, CACFP food reimbursement to help
you provide healthy meals, and curriculum programs to better prepare children to
enter school. These programs are the building blocks for your plan of operations.
Additionally, we make timeline recommendations for which plans you should start
with and which plans you should implement later because we know that if you
take the time to build a strong business foundation, your business will thrive and
you will change lives.
Food Reimbursement Program
To maintain an affordable tuition rate for the children who attend your center,
we recommend enrolling in the Child and Adult Food Care Program (CACFP)
as soon as you open your center. CACFP is a federal food program that will
reimburse you for 2 meals and 1 snack each operating day. CACFP requires 10%
of enrolled children to come from homes with incomes below the federal poverty
line; reimbursement rates will depend on family income per child.
CACFP Enrollment Requirements
•	 Obtain a child care center license.
•	 Maintain a 25% or higher enrollment of low-income children.
•	 Update eligibility documentation for each child annually
•	 Maintain daily records of meal times, meal
counts, and labor necessary to the
food service.
•	 Require kitchen staff to attend a
program training session prior to
the center’s participation in the
program, and annually.
Government Subsidies Program
Many families cannot afford quality
childcare; to maintain an affordable
tuition for low-income children, we
recommend that you offer assistance
for parents to sign up with the Texas
Workforce Commission for subsidized
childcare. Your assistance will help you
attract new families and keep families who
suffer from financial turmoil. Using the Texas
Workforce Commission will also guarantee at least
partial payment for children in the program.
Subsidized Child Care Requirements
•	 Maintain daycare center license.
•	 Children must be under the age of 13.
•	 Family must be transitioning from public assistance, receiving or needing
protective services, or be low-income.

Curriculum Programs
Low-income families face a difficult choice when trying to find childcare centers
that are safe and affordable. Families like the ones in the DeSoto, Cedar Springs,
Duncanville, and Lancaster areas have an even more difficult time because of the
lack of local centers. Your dream of providing a learning environment for children
goes above and beyond the expectations of the parents in these areas.
Because this opportunity is vital to your dream, we want you to take the time to
find a plan that is right for you. We recommend that you start the center using a
free or trial curriculum. With these curricula, you can explore what materials work
for your center and your children without the risk of paying for something that
is ineffective for you. We recommend that you explore the free or trial curricula
options listed below for at least one year before committing to a paid curriculum.
English Curricula Options
•	 Letter of the Week Curriculum is an online source for ages 0-11; this curriculum
offers bi-weekly learning themes and a pre-written planning calendar.
•	 KidZone Curriculum is an online source for ages 0-11; this curriculum offers a
flexible plan with topics like math, science, geography, and language arts.
•	 Kidsparkz Curriculum is an online source for ages 0-5; this curriculum offers
a daily schedule of activities with topics like dinosaurs, transportation, shapes,
and wild animals. This curriculum costs $28 dollars for a one-year trial with
options to buy more material.
Spanish Curricula Options
•	 SpanishTown.ca is an online source for any age; this source provides basic
Spanish lessons through downloadable worksheets and video lessons. The
curriculum offers topics like colors, about me, and greetings.
•	 Spanish Lessons TV is a video library via youtube.com; this source offers
Spanish lessons from basic to advanced.
•	 Teach Beside Me is an online source for any age; this source offers video
lessons, lessons via music, and downloadable content and activities.
Getting Licensed
Once your business plan is in place, there are four major steps you will need to
take to get your Daycare Provider’s license. You’ve already done your research,
so we’ve provided all the forms and documentation in the digital appendix
that you can easily fill out and submit, as well as a checklist to keep everything
in order.

To obtain your license, you will take these steps:
Step One: Attend a class.
Attend a Daycare Center Pre-Application Class in which licensing staff will speak
with you about requirements for licensing. This class may include an interview
with licensing staff, group meeting or orientation class. During this class, the staff
will provide you with the forms you need to fill out to complete the application.
(See these forms in the digital appendix.)
Step Two: Apply for a license.
Submit the application form and pay all applicable fees. We have attached a
checklist of all items needed in the digital appendix (4daycare-license/checklist.
pdf). All required forms are also provided in the digital appendix (4daycare-
license/forms), including:
•	 Application form (2910application.pdf)
•	 Plan of operation (2948plan-of-operation.pdf)
•	 Verification of fee payment (3010verification-of-fee-payment.pdf)
•	 Request for background checks (2971request-for-background-checks.pdf)

You will also need to provide the following:
•	 A floor plan estimating the dimensions of the indoor and outdoor areas
•	 Proof of liability insurance
•	 A certificate of good standing or formation (if applicable)
If you meet certain requirements as listed on the application, you may need to
provide additional information such as proof of high school diploma, proof of CPR
certification, and so on.
The licensing office has 21 days to review the application. After that time, they
will notify you that the application has been accepted for processing or that the
materials are incomplete or do not comply with the minimum standards required
to obtain a license. This notification will inform you what you need to complete
the forms or comply with the standards.
After revising your materials, you may then resubmit them for review. Note that if
the application is determined to be incomplete three times in one year, you will be

unable to apply again for one year from the date the third incomplete application
is returned.
Step 3: Get inspected.
Request inspections from local fire and sanitation officials. They will come to
your property and conduct a fire and sanitation inspection, which includes a gas
leakage inspection if the building has a gas line.
Before issuing the license, licensing officials will contact you to set up a permit
inspection. This inspection will ensure that you and your operation comply with
the minimum standards and laws. If there are deficiencies, licensing officials will
inform you and set a due date for corrections.
Your permit will be approved or denied within 60 days of receipt of application.
Step 4: Obtain your license.
If all of the requirements are met, the licensing office will issue an initial permit.
This permit allows you to operate your business pending issue of a non-expiring
license. The non-expiring license will be issued after three months and at least
three permit inspections.
If you are unable to begin operation before the non-expiring license is issued,
the licensing office will not issue an initial permit. If you are unable to obtain a
non-expiring license after the initial period, a new initial permit will have to be
requested and obtained. You can only go through this renewal process once.
Once you obtain a non-expiring license, it is valid until relinquished or revoked
as long as:
•	 Your business is regularly providing childcare
•	 Your business meets minimum standards
•	 Your business has paid its fees
•	 Your business’ ownership has remained the same or new ownership did not
change policies or procedures
•	 Your business has not changed locations or type of services*
*You may obtain an amended permit if your business moves locations without
obtaining a new permit.

Forecasting the Future of Your Business
After you’ve successfully established Destani’s Daycare, you’ll want to consider
how the company will grow as a business. We have explored your possible profit
and operating costs, including interactive spreadsheets that you can access in
the digital appendix, as well as possible plans for expansion to make Destani’s
Daycare everything you want it to be—a haven for educational childcare.
Profit
We have developed a comprehensive forecast spreadsheet for your expected
profit, per child, for the first months after you open your doors. Take a look at the
spreadsheet in the digital appendix (1budget-templates/profit-forecast.xls) to play
around with these numbers and see how much business you need to attract in
order to become a profitable enterprise.
Additionally, we have laid out your monthly operating costs in another interactive
spreadsheet (1budget-templates/operating-budget.xls). Manipulate this tool to
find the monthly cost of running your business.

information you provided and our own research into government statistics on

Plan for Expansion
Of course, our plan doesn’t include all of the elements you wanted. So far, you
haven’t seen any indication of an after school care program or a nighttime
care program.
Our strategy is to start small and start strong—then, when you have a solid
foundation and a flourishing business, add these supplemental elements to grow
your company, your profits, and your community impact.

We’ve outlined preliminary plans for making the following expansions:

Take a look at the budgets we’ve developed for these expansions in the digital
appendix. Then, return to the Timeline section on page 9 to see our projections
for the development of your business, from opening to expansion and beyond.
After School Care Program
Your plan to provide after school care will provide the community with a valuable
service and keep many latchkey kids safe while their parents are at work. We know
that providing after school care is important to you, so we want you to implement
it as soon as feasibly possible.
Providing after school care means that you will need to buy and maintain a few
vans or a small bus; you will also need to hire more employees to pick up and
care for the additional children. After school care regulations also dictate that you
provide 35 square feet of building space per child and a study area.
Based on our proposed budget and research, we recommend that you expand
your services to include after school care after you do one of the following:
•	 Experience 9 months of profit (if your building already has the proper amount
of space for the additional children)
OR
•	 Experience 18 months of profit and expand your building
This timeline may seem tedious, but our goal is to keep you in business so that
you can help more families long-term.
Nighttime Care Program
Nighttime care is a rare and usually expensive option for parents in the DeSoto,
Cedar Springs, Duncanville, and Lancaster area. Operating a 24-hour, low-income
childcare facility is an admirable aspiration. Because a 24-hour operation is costly
to start up (with extra supplies, more employees, more paperwork, and required
bathing facilities) we recommend that you expand your hours of operation to
24-hours only after you:
•	 Experience one full year of profit
OR
•	 Receive a grant specifically for the 24-hour expansion

We understand that 24-hour care will help you provide a great service in your
area, and we believe that waiting for this expansion will give you a greater chance
of success. Before you are ready to expand to a 24-hour program, you will
need to:
•	 Provide a crib or cot for each child in the center
•	 Provide separate toiletries (towels, toothbrushes, soap, toothpaste, and so on)
for each child
•	 Add 1 bathing facility for every 15 children in the nighttime care program
•	 Accommodate nighttime staffing regulations

Once you’ve created your business plan and submitted your license application,
it’s time to move forward with the most important step: finding startup funds.
Many small businesses have a hard time finding funding for their startups, but
there are a lot of agencies who want to help you do it. There are also great
alternative funding sources that you can explore to turn your plan into a reality.
We’ve looked into a few of them for you.
Resources
For businesses like Destani’s Daycare, there are many non-profit agencies that can
point you toward the perfect funding options and offer suggestions for how you
can make your dream a reality.
These resources include:

Funding Options
Become a Non-Profit
Non-profit organizations are much more likely to receive government and grant
funding, and organizations like Destani’s Daycare typically operate as non-profit
agencies. While we understand that you would prefer to maintain control over
Destani’s Daycare as a for-profit business, there are many benefits to becoming
a non-profit organization, especially if you want to provide deep discounts for
low-income families. These benefits include tax-exempt status and access to
grant funding.

While grants to for-profit businesses are rare, there are a number of contests

been able to accomplish their dreams with sites like Kickstarter and GoFundMe.
Individual Development Accounts (IDAs)
These are matched savings accounts that allow low-wealth individuals to save
for goals such as business startups within a specific time frame. If you meet your
savings goal within the time frame, the sponsoring organization will match the

Microloans
These are small loans a business can borrow from multiple sources to fill business
needs, typically in the amount of $500-$35,000. To find microloans, you can

Forgivable Loans
These are loans for which funders may not require repayment if their requirements
of lending are met. The typical loan amount is $99 and you can borrow from
multiple sources. Boefly.com is an online application form from which you can
apply to several lenders at once.
Angel Investors
These are the most difficult funders to access and many require an invitation to
pitch your idea or participate in funding competitions. Some angel investors in

first four years. We want to ensure that Destani’s Daycare is not part of that 75%,
and the best way to make that happen is to arm yourself with information. Our
proposal has provided you with the research and the resources to give Destani’s
Daycare its best chance at success.
Funding for a location and startup costs is all that stands between you and your
beautiful dream to care for and improve your community. In order to gain that
funding you will need to turn your dream into a comprehensive plan that you can
present to investors and financiers. Having this plan will not only aid you in selling
your idea to people who can help you secure startup capital, it will also help you
to anticipate future problems, plan for future expansions, and acquire additional
future funding.
Through our research, we have put together a comprehensive, itemized budget
that examines both your startup costs and the cost of operation. You will have to
justify why you are requesting the amount of money that you are, and this budget
will be an invaluable tool in doing so.
Our team has based our proposal on the founding principle that the key to your

  • 5. Executive Summary In low-income communities, many children have no access to quality childcare. Families who can’t afford good childcare have to settle for overcrowded, low- quality daycares where the childcare providers are more interested in making money than providing the care these children need. Because childcare costs are so high, these same children often go hungry even as their parents struggle to provide for them. After school, latchkey kids in these communities go home to empty homes, alone and vulnerable. Many of these kids become high school dropouts or, worse, juvenile defenders. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, children from low-income families are more likely to engage in risky, violent behaviors than children from middle-income homes.   • 7. 7 The Goal What’s the problem? You have a dream to open an educational commercial childcare center with a mission to serve children from low-income families. In order to realize this dream, you need a few things, including a location, a business plan, a daycare license, and a plan for funding. At this moment, your most promising lead for a location has fallen through. Without a location, you can’t complete the daycare licensing process. Without a daycare license, you can’t develop a comprehensive business plan. And without a business plan, you will be hard-pressed to secure funding through grants, loans, or investors. Obviously, without funding, there is no facility. There is no curriculum, no Spanish program, no family meetings. There are no Little Wings or Little Angels or Little Footprints. Sadly, without money—there is no Destani’s Daycare. What’s the solution? Fortunately, we have a plan. In these pages, we have laid out a comprehensive solution to all of these problems with one goal in mind: getting your doors open. We’ve thought critically through all stages of this process to bring you location options, a developed business plan, a procedure for securing a daycare license, and suggestions for finding funding. Through all of it, we’ve kept your autonomy as a businesswoman in mind. By prioritizing your integral role in the leadership of this business, we have developed these things as tools at your disposal. Once you fulfill the requirements of our plan, you can do with the results what you will. In the end, it’s totally up to you. We believe that the time is right to make your dream a reality. You have the passion and expertise, and, right now, we have the plan. Hopefully, we can work together to empower the young minds of South Dallas through quality educational daycare, brought to you by Destani Lewis. 7
  • 8. Step One Find a location. Your location must meet all federal and state regulations for childcare facilities. You will need a floor plan to apply for a license. See page 11 for three location options we have found in our research. Step Two Create a business plan. You must have a detailed business plan to apply for a daycare license and secure funding through a bank or investors. See the digital appendix to fill out our interactive business plan template. Step Three Get licensed. 1. Attend a pre-application childcare class. 2. Apply for a license. The office will respond within 21 days of receipt. If you do not pass the first inspection, you have two more chances to submit an application within 1 year. See the digital appendix for a license application checklist. 8
  • 9. Step Four Secure funding. Apply for business loans, become a non-profit, secure a grant, and/or take advantage of one of the alternative funding opportunities we have laid out on page 21. See the digital appendix for forms and links to these funding opportunities. Step Five Operate! • Begin operation within 6 months of receiving the initial permit. • Schedule 3 inspections for the non-expiring license. • Schedule fire and sanitation inspections. If you do not meet the requirements for the non- expiring license, you must renew the initial permit for an additional 6 months. Step Six Expand your business. As your business grows, add the afterschool program and nighttime care program, taking care to adhere to all federal and state regulations.   • 12. 12 The Plan Creating a Business Plan No matter what funding method you decide to pursue, a business plan will be essential to obtaining those funds. Investors and financiers will want to see a thought-out, well-developed plan for how the business will function and where it will go. You need to be able to give them the story of your business so that they can believe in your dream as much as you do. Building a Plan Your business plan helps sell your dream to the people who can make it a reality. It is important that you use this document to set yourself apart from your competition and convey your passion for childcare. Your business plan should have the following sections: • Cover Page • Executive Summary • Company Description • Market Research • Service Line • Marketing & Sales • Financial Projections To aid you in creating your business plan, we have provided an interactive business plan template in the digital appendix (3business-plan/template.pdf). This template is tailored to Destani’s Daycare and its needs, and it will guide you through every step of writing your business plan. Plan of Operation Your vision for local children and families in South Dallas is life-changing, and our goal is for you to build a strong foundation that will sustain your business for many years to come. Our plan includes features like government subsidies programs to keep the cost of tuition down, CACFP food reimbursement to help you provide healthy meals, and curriculum programs to better prepare children to enter school. These programs are the building blocks for your plan of operations. Additionally, we make timeline recommendations for which plans you should start with and which plans you should implement later because we know that if you take the time to build a strong business foundation, your business will thrive and you will change lives.

Food Reimbursement Program To maintain an affordable tuition rate for the children who attend your center, we recommend enrolling in the Child and Adult Food Care Program (CACFP) as soon as you open your center. CACFP is a federal food program that will reimburse you for 2 meals and 1 snack each operating day. CACFP requires 10% of enrolled children to come from homes with incomes below the federal poverty line; reimbursement rates will depend on family income per child. CACFP Enrollment Requirements • Obtain a child care center license. • Maintain a 25% or higher enrollment of low-income children. • Update eligibility documentation for each child annually • Maintain daily records of meal times, meal counts, and labor necessary to the food service. • Require kitchen staff to attend a program training session prior to the center’s participation in the program, and annually. Government Subsidies Program Many families cannot afford quality childcare; to maintain an affordable tuition for low-income children, we recommend that you offer assistance for parents to sign up with the Texas Workforce Commission for subsidized childcare. Your assistance will help you attract new families and keep families who suffer from financial turmoil. Using the Texas Workforce Commission will also guarantee at least partial payment for children in the program. Subsidized Child Care Requirements • Maintain daycare center license. • Children must be under the age of 13. • Family must be transitioning from public assistance, receiving or needing protective services, or be low-income. 13Creating a Business Plan “Your business plan is what sells your dream to the people who can make it a reality.”
  • 14. Curriculum Programs Low-income families face a difficult choice when trying to find childcare centers that are safe and affordable. Families like the ones in the DeSoto, Cedar Springs, Duncanville, and Lancaster areas have an even more difficult time because of the lack of local centers. Your dream of providing a learning environment for children goes above and beyond the expectations of the parents in these areas. Because this opportunity is vital to your dream, we want you to take the time to find a plan that is right for you. We recommend that you start the center using a free or trial curriculum. With these curricula, you can explore what materials work for your center and your children without the risk of paying for something that is ineffective for you. We recommend that you explore the free or trial curricula options listed below for at least one year before committing to a paid curriculum. English Curricula Options • Letter of the Week Curriculum is an online source for ages 0-11; this curriculum offers bi-weekly learning themes and a pre-written planning calendar. • KidZone Curriculum is an online source for ages 0-11; this curriculum offers a flexible plan with topics like math, science, geography, and language arts. • Kidsparkz Curriculum is an online source for ages 0-5; this curriculum offers a daily schedule of activities with topics like dinosaurs, transportation, shapes, and wild animals. This curriculum costs $28 dollars for a one-year trial with options to buy more material. Spanish Curricula Options • SpanishTown.ca is an online source for any age; this source provides basic Spanish lessons through downloadable worksheets and video lessons. The curriculum offers topics like colors, about me, and greetings. • Spanish Lessons TV is a video library via youtube.com; this source offers Spanish lessons from basic to advanced. • Teach Beside Me is an online source for any age; this source offers video lessons, lessons via music, and downloadable content and activities. Getting Licensed Once your business plan is in place, there are four major steps you will need to take to get your Daycare Provider’s license. You’ve already done your research, so we’ve provided all the forms and documentation in the digital appendix that you can easily fill out and submit, as well as a checklist to keep everything in order. 14 The Plan
  • 15. To obtain your license, you will take these steps: Step One: Attend a class. Attend a Daycare Center Pre-Application Class in which licensing staff will speak with you about requirements for licensing. This class may include an interview with licensing staff, group meeting or orientation class. During this class, the staff will provide you with the forms you need to fill out to complete the application. (See these forms in the digital appendix.) Step Two: Apply for a license. Submit the application form and pay all applicable fees. We have attached a checklist of all items needed in the digital appendix (4daycare-license/checklist. pdf). All required forms are also provided in the digital appendix (4daycare- license/forms), including: • Application form (2910application.pdf) • Plan of operation (2948plan-of-operation.pdf) • Verification of fee payment (3010verification-of-fee-payment.pdf) • Request for background checks (2971request-for-background-checks.pdf) • Personal history statement (2981personal-history-statement.pdf) • Controlling person form (2760controlling-person.pdf) • Governing body/director designation form (2911governing-body-director-designation.pdf) You will also need to provide the following: • A floor plan estimating the dimensions of the indoor and outdoor areas • Proof of liability insurance • A certificate of good standing or formation (if applicable) If you meet certain requirements as listed on the application, you may need to provide additional information such as proof of high school diploma, proof of CPR certification, and so on. The licensing office has 21 days to review the application. After that time, they will notify you that the application has been accepted for processing or that the materials are incomplete or do not comply with the minimum standards required to obtain a license. This notification will inform you what you need to complete the forms or comply with the standards. After revising your materials, you may then resubmit them for review. Note that if the application is determined to be incomplete three times in one year, you will be 15Getting Licensed
  • 16. unable to apply again for one year from the date the third incomplete application is returned. Step 3: Get inspected. Request inspections from local fire and sanitation officials. They will come to your property and conduct a fire and sanitation inspection, which includes a gas leakage inspection if the building has a gas line. Before issuing the license, licensing officials will contact you to set up a permit inspection. This inspection will ensure that you and your operation comply with the minimum standards and laws. If there are deficiencies, licensing officials will inform you and set a due date for corrections. Your permit will be approved or denied within 60 days of receipt of application. Step 4: Obtain your license. If all of the requirements are met, the licensing office will issue an initial permit. This permit allows you to operate your business pending issue of a non-expiring license. The non-expiring license will be issued after three months and at least three permit inspections. If you are unable to begin operation before the non-expiring license is issued, the licensing office will not issue an initial permit. If you are unable to obtain a non-expiring license after the initial period, a new initial permit will have to be requested and obtained. You can only go through this renewal process once. Once you obtain a non-expiring license, it is valid until relinquished or revoked as long as: • Your business is regularly providing childcare • Your business meets minimum standards • Your business has paid its fees • Your business’ ownership has remained the same or new ownership did not change policies or procedures • Your business has not changed locations or type of services* *You may obtain an amended permit if your business moves locations without obtaining a new permit. 16 The Plan
  • 17. Forecasting the Future of Your Business After you’ve successfully established Destani’s Daycare, you’ll want to consider how the company will grow as a business. We have explored your possible profit and operating costs, including interactive spreadsheets that you can access in the digital appendix, as well as possible plans for expansion to make Destani’s Daycare everything you want it to be—a haven for educational childcare. Profit We have developed a comprehensive forecast spreadsheet for your expected profit, per child, for the first months after you open your doors. Take a look at the spreadsheet in the digital appendix (1budget-templates/profit-forecast.xls) to play around with these numbers and see how much business you need to attract in order to become a profitable enterprise. Additionally, we have laid out your monthly operating costs in another interactive spreadsheet (1budget-templates/operating-budget.xls). Manipulate this tool to find the monthly cost of running your business. Here’s a summary based on our own estimates, which we produced from the information you provided and our own research into government statistics on commercial childcare centers. Plan for Expansion Of course, our plan doesn’t include all of the elements you wanted. So far, you haven’t seen any indication of an after school care program or a nighttime care program. Our strategy is to start small and start strong—then, when you have a solid foundation and a flourishing business, add these supplemental elements to grow your company, your profits, and your community impact. 17Forecasting the Future of Your Business

We’ve outlined preliminary plans for making the following expansions: • After school program • Nighttime care program Take a look at the budgets we’ve developed for these expansions in the digital appendix. Then, return to the Timeline section on page 9 to see our projections for the development of your business, from opening to expansion and beyond. After School Care Program Your plan to provide after school care will provide the community with a valuable service and keep many latchkey kids safe while their parents are at work. We know that providing after school care is important to you, so we want you to implement it as soon as feasibly possible. Providing after school care means that you will need to buy and maintain a few vans or a small bus; you will also need to hire more employees to pick up and care for the additional children. After school care regulations also dictate that you provide 35 square feet of building space per child and a study area. Based on our proposed budget and research, we recommend that you expand your services to include after school care after you do one of the following: • Experience 9 months of profit (if your building already has the proper amount of space for the additional children) OR • Experience 18 months of profit and expand your building This timeline may seem tedious, but our goal is to keep you in business so that you can help more families long-term. Nighttime Care Program Nighttime care is a rare and usually expensive option for parents in the DeSoto, Cedar Springs, Duncanville, and Lancaster area. Operating a 24-hour, low-income childcare facility is an admirable aspiration. Because a 24-hour operation is costly to start up (with extra supplies, more employees, more paperwork, and required bathing facilities) we recommend that you expand your hours of operation to 24-hours only after you: • Experience one full year of profit OR • Receive a grant specifically for the 24-hour expansion 18 The Plan
  • 19. We understand that 24-hour care will help you provide a great service in your area, and we believe that waiting for this expansion will give you a greater chance of success. Before you are ready to expand to a 24-hour program, you will need to: • Provide a crib or cot for each child in the center • Provide separate toiletries (towels, toothbrushes, soap, toothpaste, and so on) for each child • Add 1 bathing facility for every 15 children in the nighttime care program • Accommodate nighttime staffing regulations 19Forecasting the Future of Your Business “Our strategy is to start small and start strong.”

  • 21. Moving Forward Once you’ve created your business plan and submitted your license application, it’s time to move forward with the most important step: finding startup funds. Many small businesses have a hard time finding funding for their startups, but there are a lot of agencies who want to help you do it. There are also great alternative funding sources that you can explore to turn your plan into a reality. We’ve looked into a few of them for you. Resources For businesses like Destani’s Daycare, there are many non-profit agencies that can point you toward the perfect funding options and offer suggestions for how you can make your dream a reality. These resources include: • Small Business Association • Minority Business Development Agency • U.S. Chamber of Commerce • National Women’s Chamber of Commerce • National Black Chamber of Commerce Funding Options Become a Non-Profit Non-profit organizations are much more likely to receive government and grant funding, and organizations like Destani’s Daycare typically operate as non-profit agencies. While we understand that you would prefer to maintain control over Destani’s Daycare as a for-profit business, there are many benefits to becoming a non-profit organization, especially if you want to provide deep discounts for low-income families. These benefits include tax-exempt status and access to grant funding. Here’s how Destani’s Daycare can become a non-profit agency: 1. File for articles of incorporation in Texas. (4funding-sources/forms/202tx- certificate-of-formation-non-profit-corporation.pdf) 2. Elect a board of directors that will represent the parents of the children Destani’s 21

Many of these contests are free to enter, and they allow startup businesses to pitch their ideas in front of investors. The Small Business Administration can help you locate some of these lenders. Though the application forms vary for each lender, here are some questions you’ll need to answer to complete the SBA loan form: • Why are you applying for the loan? • How will you use the funds? • What assets will you purchase, and who are your suppliers? • What other debt do you have? • Who are the members of your management team? • What is your personal background? Friends, family, and thousands of people who want to help small businesses like yours succeed can donate to your startup fund. Many people have been able to accomplish their dreams with sites like Kickstarter and GoFundMe. Individual Development Accounts (IDAs) These are matched savings accounts that allow low-wealth individuals to save for goals such as business startups within a specific time frame. If you meet your savings goal within the time frame, the sponsoring organization will match the funds. You can find current IDA programs online at cfed.org/programs/idas/ directory_search. Microloans These are small loans a business can borrow from multiple sources to fill business needs, typically in the amount of $500-$35,000. To find microloans, you can visit us.accion.org. Forgivable Loans These are loans for which funders may not require repayment if their requirements of lending are met. The typical loan amount is $99 and you can borrow from multiple sources. Boefly.com is an online application form from which you can apply to several lenders at once. Angel Investors These are the most difficult funders to access and many require an invitation to pitch your idea or participate in funding competitions.
