I came from Washington D.C. for this conference…if we wanted to ensure there were no air travel fatalities for folks coming to PTE, what would be the absolute best way to do that?<click>Best Air Travel Safety is to take a boat, and car, and train to get here. I would have had to leave last week, but there would be no air travel fatality.
Obviously, people want to fly and take the risk of flying, so let’s talk about Air Traffic Control.What is the best way to avoid collisions? <click>Only allow one aircraft at a time to fly!Obviously, very safe, but not very efficient.

Only one non-stop, and only during the summer.Less than 20 fatal incidents caused in some way by air traffic control.I would argue the system is safe, and we are really focusing on efficiency without degradation to safety.FAA’s NextGen, and SESAR, are really focused on sharing information and integrating decision support tools to increase efficiency.
At 50,000 feet, this is an overview of the FAA’s NextGen, the parallel to SESAR. I am not an expert. I am a vendor that works closely with the FAA on particular ATC solutions.Transition from Ground Based to Satellite Based Navigation and Surveillance. ADS-B provides 1 second updates to aircraft positions, allows ground ATC systems to stop relying on radar and be more reliable and reduce separation requirements.
But it also enables additional decision support and safety tools, like visualization of surrounding aircraft in the cockpit
And enabling In-Trail procedures, where properly equipped aircraft can fly through two aircraft following each other using standard separation.This is very critical in areas like oceanic flights, where standard separation is 50nm and new, better performing airplanes get stuck underneath slower and lower older airplanes. Best equipped, best served.
Speaking of best-equipped, best served, having satellite based navigation enables RNAV / RNP. Because of the better accuracy and automation, controllers can reduced dependence on radar vectoring, altitude, and speed assignments allowing a reduction in radio transmissions, saving time and fuel. This also makes for more efficient use of airspace, packing in more routes in the same space.
Every clearance in the US is given via radio. Voice communications contribute to operational errors due to miscommunication, stolen clearances (an air traffic control clearance for one aircraft is heard and erroneously accepted by another aircraft) and delayed message transfers due to radio frequency congestion. Data Communication enables automation to pass on information and will shift air traffic operations from minute-by-minute tactical control, to more predictable and planned strategic traffic management.
Back to the best-equipped, best served, having datalink allows complex clearances too difficult to read over the radio.
While the average facility has an expected useful life of approximately 25 to 30 years, 59 percent of FAA facilities are over 30 years old and the average age of an En-route center is 43 years!
