The document describes the process of designing merchandise and promotional materials for a barbershop. It discusses initial logo designs using a graphics tablet, including a skull and scissors design. Various designs and color adjustments are explored for t-shirts, with the final designs using a skull logo in different color combinations. Posters and price lists are also designed with adjustments to fonts, colors, and layouts. A promotional video is produced, featuring branding, interviews, color corrections, and a final end card with contact information.
2. To begin my production I wanted to design some merchandise for my barbershop. I wanted the
merchandise to be modern and stylish whilst linking in to the streetwear culture and style of
clothes. I began by using a graphics tablet to try and draw a skeleton that was holding scissors. I
think this would of worked really well as it links in with the urban theme that I am going for and
the skeleton holding the scissors is a cool design whilst the scissors link to the jumper being a
product promoting the barbershop. I then used a graphics tablet to try and draw what I had in
mind however I think it is fair to say that drawing isn’t my strong point and it was a lot harder than
I originally thought it was.
I then decided that as I wasn’t able to draw a full skeleton then maybe try and have a skull and
have a skull coming out of a barber pole so that the concept of what I had in mind was similar and
all still links in with the urban theme however the design changed slightly. I then again used a
graphics tablet and attempted to draw it and it didn’t turn out too bad however I wasn’t happy
with it and I wanted a product that I would like and wear myself. I do think if I spent a bit more
time on the design I could of made it look a lot better to the point where I would of wore it
however I didn’t want to spend too long on just this logo when I had other products that I had to
design still.
This was my final design for the logo where I had the skull with the scissors going
through it. I used these imagines and uploaded them into Photoshop changed the
hue / saturation to make the colors of the skull and scissors look darker. I liked the
way that the first one looked however I thought it would also look good if it was a
bit darker still so I made it even darker and this is the final product for the front of
the jumper
3. I then designed the back of the jumper and thought I would have the name of the
barbershop to brand the business however instead of doing this in a boring way
thought I would have “mark john” on one side with barbering going down the middle
and “”mark john” reversed on the other side
This was my first design however I didn’t think the dark skull went well with the bright
text so I decided to change the white so that It matches the skull. This also didn’t look
good because because yellow and gray just didn’t go together in my opinion.
I decided to change the text color from yellow to gray so that it matched the skull and
where it said barbering going down the middle I changed that to white as gray and
white go well together. This is how it turned out and I was happy with this design.
I also liked the back yellow and white text on the back of the jumper and I didn’t want
to scrap that so I decided because yellow and white go well together then instead of
changing them colors change the color of the skull o I did so and made the skull
brighter and tis is how it turned out. So I decided to use these as my final products so
that the jumpers are the same design but there are 2 different color ways of the
jumper.
I made one last design where on the back of the jumper it simply just says mark john. I
got inspiration from this jumper by asap rocky. This jumper is simple and promotes the
brand effectively whilst looking stylish and interesting to the audience. .
4. I then made my opening time poster for the barbershop. The first design I made
was very simple and got the job done. It was on a black background with white
text so that it could be read easily by the consumer. I had the branding at the top
of the page which as when customer see this it is brand recognition and it will
catch their attention. I had the opening hours in the middle of the page and the
website at the bottom of the page. I liked this first design however I thought It
looked a bit boring just being on a black background so I included a photo that I
took at the barbershop and put this layer at the bottom of all the other layers and
changed the tolerance down so that you are still able to read the text and the
background is still dark however it is more interesting than the image just being
plain black. I then thought the bottom part of the poster looked quite plain so I
added in the social media of the barber shop to promote their instagram and
Facebook. This made the poster look better but I thought there were a few
improvements I could of made. The improvements were to move the text down
closer to the bottom of the page and to also spread the text out so that it is all in
line and looks aesthetically pleasing.
5. I the made a pricelist for the services that the barber shop
offer. I wanted to keep this simple I first thought I would use a
plain black background with red text as I thought that red and
black go really well together. This is what it looked like and it
didn’t look as good as I thought. It appeared to be quite hard
to read so I thought I would change the background color to
white and see what that looked like. Again I thought it looked
alright however I wasn’t 100% happy with this so I decided to
change the font color to black and leave the background white
This is how it turned out and I liked this
design however I thought that the top was a
bit plain so I then decided to add some
branding to it and after that I thought that I
was done and was going to leave that as the
finished product however I had an idea to
flip the colours and to have the background
black and the text white so I did this and I
preferred the new design with black
background so I stuck to using that one as
the finished product
6. I then went to go make my promotional video. With the clips I had a lot more footage
than what I actually filmed however I wasn’t able to use all the footage because in
some of the footage you aren't able to hear it because in some there is another
barber cutting a customers hair which then meant all you could hear in the
background was the clippers and you couldn’t hear the barber speaking so I didn’t
bother using these. When my video starts it begins by having the barbers logo, I chose
to do this because it allows the audience to easily identify the brand. The logo then
fades out and goes to a shot of the barber. I liked the interview in the video because I
felt that it allows the consumer to get to know the barber and I thought this was a
good way to get the customer to get to know the barber. Throughout my video I
haven't used that many effects. I used colour correction to make my video look nicer
to watch and it just helps to balance the colours out nicely. I also added a warp
stabilizer to the videos. The warp stabilizer helps to make the footage look more
stable and this makes the video look aesthetically better and it will make the audience
want o watch it because nobody would want to watch a video that is very shaky and
looks messy. When editing my video I experimented with different fonts for the
questions that I asked the barber and the font I chose was Adobe Garamond Pro and
the reason why I chose this text was because it was the same text as the store front
so it links into the barbershop and as well as this I thought it looked good and went
well with my video as well. The end card of my video includes the barbers logo at the
top to promote the barber shop again and so when customers see this logo they will
immediately think of this barbershop and as well I have included the barbershop
social media and website. I included this at the end of the video because I thought
that it was important to the consumer to know where they can find the barber online
and look at any existing work that they have online. I designed this end card using
Photoshop and then saved it as a photo so I could include it in the end of the video. I
think it works really well when the last clip fades out and then it moves into the end
card. This transition works smoothly and in my opinion it was a smooth transition to
do and it works effectively.
