The images above can be found on the Foam website.
www.foam.org is an online site for Amsterdam's Foam
magazine and art gallery, which specializes in
contemporary art photography.
Order issue #45: Back to
the Future
The images on the left show various pages
from Foam’s contemporary art photography
magazine. The theme for my product is
photography which makes this a good
example for a possible influence to my own
product as I had not considered creating a
photography magazine. This particular
magazine has countless pages of artwork with
very few pages of text however the pages that
do have text feature highly detailed articles on
the piece of artwork and the story behind the
creation. An element I would use in my own
product would be the overall layout as the
pages are not crowded with artwork and the
text is in columns similar to what you would
see in a formal newspaper. The text is also
written in an ordinary but bold font which I
think works really well against the soft colors
in the background, all of the statements above
combined make for a magazine that is really
nice to look at and enjoyable to read.
Existing Product
Here are two examples of an online photography
portfolio. These templates are taken from
photoshelter. The two photography portfolio’s are
themed on people and nature and are both very
aesthetically pleasing. An element I would use in
my own product is the layout of the portfolio
pictured at the top because there are as many
photos featured as possible on the screen
however the page does not look too crowded as I
think the creator of this particular portfolio has
selected carefully which photo goes where.
Another aspect of this portfolio that I like is the
simplicity of the navigation menu where viewers
have an easy way of finding the images of their
particular interest. Although I prefer the layout of
the portfolio pictured at the top, I really like the
photos taken from the photographer who has
created the portfolio pictured t the bottom. The
photographer has chosen their lighting carefully
as some of his photos feature sunsets that are
especially dramatic against the chosen
landscapes.
The images above are templates from
www.photoshelter.com/templates/
Existing Product
These images are examples of photography
printed on clothing. This is one of my original
ideas that has been further influenced by the
images shown on this website. An element of
this product that I could perhaps use on my
own is the way that the photographs are
displayed on the item. Although using just a
basic photograph printed on a T-Shirt is
affective, I quite like the idea of using collages
or frames. Another thing I could consider is
using text in a way that makes my design more
unique such as the images shown below. With
my own range of products I could perhaps
offer my own variety of colors and styles of
clothing too. The website design is simple and
the navigation bar is easy to use therefore my
own product will be very similar to this design
and although pricing is an aspect I should
consider later I still think that these prices are
reasonable.
The images displayed are taken from
www.maxphoto.co.uk/photo-gifts/photo-clothing.html
Existing Product
This photography website features various links to tutorials and walkthroughs that
are designed to help photographers that have just started or overall less
experienced which is an element that I could use in my own product however I
dislike the design of this web page as personally I think I could look a lot more
professional if different fonts and colors are used. From this website I can gather
ideas on how a website can improve which means that it has influenced me
differently to the other existing products I have talked about however similar to this
product my website will have the same basic concept of showcasing and explaining
different photos. My product much like this will be have various themed page.

Research Analysis
• What common features do the researched
products have?
• The researched products are aesthetically similar such as the photos chosen for the
website, portfolio and magazine, the layout of the photos are also similar as the
products focus more on the photography aspect of the product rather than the text
that is featured however products like magazines and websites do require some text at
least but personally I think its more about the quality of the text and the information it
gives you rather than the quantity.
• What aspects of the research will you include
within your on work?
• The aspects of research I hope to use in my products are the aesthetics of both the
layout and photography. I have decided to include a magazine in my range of products
as I have drawn a lot of influence from the website featured on the first slide. It will
have a very similar layout however it will include my own explanations and
photographs.
Questionnaire Analysis
Audience research
• Observation: 90% of people who responded to my survey are aged 16-19.
• What this says about my audience: A lot of the responses where from young people
who are at the age of still being in education or leaving shortly. This implies that my
audience will have, or certainly heard of, social networking like Instagram and other
that are photography based but less mainstream. I know this because social
networking of any kind is extremely popular with this type of age range.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: I can analyse aspects of social
networking that is favourable by my target audience and include these influences in
my own product. I could also chose themes to my collection of images that also
appeal to people of this age.
Audience research
• Observation: 80% of people that responded to my survey are interested in photography.
• What this says about my audience: This says that my audience would be willing to view and use my range
of products as from the responses I can see it’s a likeable subject amongst students however I can not tell
from this information what themes in photography are preferred by this audience.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: This question basically shows that an audience of this
type Is just generally interested in photography of any kind as my question does not specify what kinds of
subjects however this is certainly a good start as I know that as long as my product is photography it will
still be enjoyed.
Audience research
• Observation: 70% of people who responded to my survey do use Instagram.
• What this says about my audience: As predicted I can see that Instagram is in fact a
popular social networking site/application amongst my audience which confirms that
people of that specific age range already have some kind of experience with
photography. Instagram is the kind of social network where it gives you suggestions due
to what you have recently liked and although a lot of users post things like selfies and
random photographs, there are countless photography pages that are themed and those
that are not still carefully use certain photography elements to their posts such as
angling and lighting. This basically tells me that people generally like this platform as it
has easy navigation and interesting photography.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: As previously mentioned I can take
influences from popular social media platforms and due to this response I will specifically
take influences from this platform.
Audience research
• Observation: Photos of the natural environment is the most favourable topic.
• What this says about my audience: With this information I can take a step forward with my research as this
response identified the most favourable topic but only 50% of respondents have chosen this topic which made me
consider featuring more than one theme with my range of products however there is no second favourable topic
because this response shows there as a tie between another three. This means that I will only stick to one theme
as I will appeal to very specific audience with a strong following.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: Now that I have identified a popular interest I can now revolve my
products around that specific subject.
Audience research
• Observation: The majority of respondents prefer pictures with selective lighting instead of those being edited with
filters.
• What this says about my audience: Again this further specifies what type of photographs my target audience
would prefer to be featured in my range of products.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: My choice of photos should be those of natural landscapes and
anything nature inspired. The ideas that come to mind are sun rise, sun sets, flowers, sunshine and perhaps
landscapes featuring dramatic weather.
Audience research
• Observation: Portfolio is the most favourable way of presenting photography.
• What this says about my audience: This says that my audience prefers the layout of a photography portfolio rather than a
website but it also suggests that maybe my target audience prefer a product that is less text orientated. This also shows the
opposite for photography printed on clothing which is understandable for young people aged 16-19, as this was one of my
initial ideas I have decided to scrap that idea and feature a magazine in my range of product as it has shown to be more
enjoyable.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: Due to the response from this survey question I have decided to not
produce a product that features photography on clothing and instead go ahead with the production of a magazine.
Audience research
• Observation: Natural landscapes are the most favourable of the topics listed on the
question.
• What this says about my audience: Amongst a range of more subject areas, natural
landscapes still remains to be the most popular choice with my target audience. As this
answer has been favourable in two separate questions it has finalised my decision to
choose this specific theme.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: From the survey I have found that
photography themed around the natural environment is the best choice.
Audience research
• Observation: 70% of respondents have visited or posted on a photography website.
• What this says about my audience: This shows that my audience will be able to use my range of products
with ease due to past experience which includes things like navigation, commenting, liking, posting etc.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: Due to my responses I know that my audience have
previous experience with browsing websites which is expected of the specific age range that my product
will appeal to therefore a result of this would to be producing a website with a basic template and
navigation tools.
Audience research
• Observation: 70% of respondents have heard of Pinterest.
• What this says about my audience: Pinterest is more of a collection of themed photographs in which you choose various different subject areas upon signing up and
Pinterest will display the photographs or paintings of your chosen themes every so often. This shows that my audience will perhaps enjoy browsing a photography
portfolio as Pinterest has a similar concept in which many portfolios are combined together and inserted into one platform.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: As well as using Instagram as an influence for my website, I can use Pinterest as an influence for my portfolio by
featuring similar layout.
Audience research
• Observation: 80% of respondents do enjoy browsing various different artworks.
• What this says about my audience: This tells me that my audience also enjoy browsing artwork which is not a
question I previously asked but the responses implies that this is another subject area that young people of my
specific age range do enjoy.
• How will your product appeal to this audience: After adding this question I can possibly add art related
photography in my range of products.
Interviews
Interview 1
• What aspect of the naturally environment do you like to see in photography?
Yorkshire moors landscape
• Do you like bright and colourful photos or dark and soothing such as the night sky and moonlight lit
landscapes or environments?
depends on what kind of tone the image is going for but the colourful photos tend to be better
in my opinion
• Do you often take similar photographs yourself, whether it be on your phone or camera?
I take images on my IPad or Phone for making special Effects later on
• Do you know any local photographers?
No
• If so what type of photographs do they take, If not, is photography something you'd like to gain more
knowledge or experience in
• Not Really, I mean it can be useful but I prefer to concentrate on other things
Interview 1
• Observation:
• My audience would like to see photographs of our local environment.
• What this says about my audience:
• My audience would prefer local environments as the north Yorkshire moors was mentioned. This also implies that my
audience has a good eye for colour and contrasts as the North Yorkshire moors has a mixture of tones as some parts are
very dark colours such as dark reds and greens whilst some parts have rich greens and bright yellows.
• How will your product appeal to this
audience:
• Photography on the North Yorkshire moors is something I will have to consider as it is not too far away. As well as the survey
responses, this answer also implies that my audience would prefer raw, unedited photography considering that the moors is
naturally rich in colour.
Interview 2
• What aspect of the naturally environment do you like to see in photography?
Trees, Mountains lakes maybe animals of sorts
• Do you like bright and colourful photos or dark and soothing such as the night sky and moonlight lit
landscapes or environments?
I like both equally because one has the sky and the moon and the stars which is great in itself and the ones in
daylight are great because you get lots of detail of everything you see
• Do you often take similar photographs yourself, whether it be on your phone or camera?
I usually take pictures on my phone mainly because my camera is shit and I only really take pictures of large
landscapes during the day
• Do you know any local photographers?
No as far as I know
• If so what type of photographs do they take, If not, is photography something you'd like to gain more
knowledge or experience in?
• Yes I would like to gain more knowledge on the topic of photography because it is a fun and interesting
topic which you can take anywhere.
Interview 2
• Observation:
• My audience would be more than willing to gain further knowledge of photography.
• What this says about my audience:
• This says that my audience already has little experience with photography and are certain in what they would like to see in
my range of products.
• How will your product appeal to this
audience:
• I will feature natural landscapes and as things like trees and lakes and areas such as the moors were mentioned, I will try my
hardest to feature all of these aspects of nature into my own range of products.
Audience Profile
Category Demographic Content to appeal to this audience
Age Range
16-19 • Aspects of nature that make up for an overall pleasant experience
of viewing although this content can appeal to anybody, this was
the age range in which I received the majority of my responses.
Gender
Male/Female • My content will appeal to both genders as nature inspired
photography is not gender specific. As both genders are my
primary audience I will not change the use of colours or tones to
influence a primary audience such as using colours that can be
considered more feminine.
Psychographic
Socially conscious
Type A
• Anything nature inspired as this group care about the environment
very much.
Social Status
Social status of
any kind
• Again my product can be enjoyed by someone of any social status
as it does not feature subjects based on materialism as nothing in
my range of products would be up for purchasing.
Research Evaluation
Research Evaluation
• Give an overview of how you conducted your research. Discuss the strengths and
weaknesses of each method
– Product Research
– The products I researched were; photography magazine, photography portfolio, photography website and a website in which you can print
your own photographs on an item of your choice which featured things like t-shirts, sandals and cups. The strengths of researching these
products are that I could gain some knowledge on how each product is presented for example: navigation, templates, search filters and
colour schemes. Another aspect of research that was also helpful was being able to view popular themes amongst these types of products
such as architecture, street art, nature inspired photography and contemporary art photography. A weakness of this method of research was
finding the right target market as photography comes with a a large range of topics and styles.
– Questionnaires
– A strength of this aspect of research was that by asking specific questions I could firstly find out my target audience and what exactly they
would like to see in my range of products by asking questions like; do you use photo sharing platforms such as Instagram?, do you prefer
natural lighting in photographs instead of the use of filters? And what types of photos do you like to take? The responses from my questions
is really important information as I can narrow down the features that I will include in my product by finding out exactly what my audience
would and would not like to see therefore getting rid of or changing ideas that are the least favourable. The weaknesses of this method of
research are That the respondents must receive the link to my survey and as the only recipient of my link were students in my class, it
narrows down my target audience to that specific age range. There is also no way to tell how truthful my answers are which means I could
either have a much larger or smaller target audience than I was initially lead to believe.
– Interviews
– Unlike the questionnaires, the interviews are much more personal as I can closely asses the truthfulness of my answers by having the
individual sit and properly think about their answers as well as asking them questions. Another strength of this aspect of research is that my
questions are more in depth to those featured in my survey as they are more detailed questions that link to previous answers to give me a
deeper insight into what my audience would like to see in my range of products. Weaknesses of this aspect of research is that I am limited to
the people I can get to conduct my survey and the answers are very much opinion based which may effect my following decisions there is a
chance that the two individuals that conduct my survey might not have any knowledge or may dislike photography.
Research Evaluation
– What sort of a response did you get?
– Overall I had generally positive responses to my survey, I seem to have a very large target audience as photography
has proven to be a common interest amongst the students that conducted my survey. I know this because my answers
were quite consistent in terms of the likeliness of the subject. The questions that included a range of themes were
also very on sided as I was able to make the final decision of choosing to base my products on the natural
environment due to it consistently being the most favourable subject. I also could make the decision to feature raw
unedited photos which is something that proved to be favourable amongst the students that conducted my survey.
The interview questions also generated a positive response as from this I know what specific things want to be
featured in my products and that my audience is also willing to gain further knowledge and experience in this kind of
photography.
– How did you distribute your survey? Give an advantage and a disadvantage
– I distributed my survey via blackboard, the links posted directed the respondent to survey monkey which is the
website I used to create and collect my responses from my survey. A strength of distributed my survey in this way is
that it was a quick and easy process however as previously mentioned, my survey could only be sent to students via
blackboard which narrows down the respondents to students who were notified in my class and elsewhere. This
meant that it was difficult to have respondents of various ages as the majority of students in my class are aged
between 16-19 however there was one aged 20+ but it is impossible to tell which answers this student chose.

2. fmp research

  • 2. Existing Product The images above can be found on the Foam website. www.foam.org is an online site for Amsterdam's Foam magazine and art gallery, which specializes in contemporary art photography. Order issue #45: Back to the Future The images on the left show various pages from Foam’s contemporary art photography magazine. The theme for my product is photography which makes this a good example for a possible influence to my own product as I had not considered creating a photography magazine. This particular magazine has countless pages of artwork with very few pages of text however the pages that do have text feature highly detailed articles on the piece of artwork and the story behind the creation. An element I would use in my own product would be the overall layout as the pages are not crowded with artwork and the text is in columns similar to what you would see in a formal newspaper. The text is also written in an ordinary but bold font which I think works really well against the soft colors in the background, all of the statements above combined make for a magazine that is really nice to look at and enjoyable to read.
  • 3. Existing Product Here are two examples of an online photography portfolio. These templates are taken from photoshelter. The two photography portfolio’s are themed on people and nature and are both very aesthetically pleasing. An element I would use in my own product is the layout of the portfolio pictured at the top because there are as many photos featured as possible on the screen however the page does not look too crowded as I think the creator of this particular portfolio has selected carefully which photo goes where. Another aspect of this portfolio that I like is the simplicity of the navigation menu where viewers have an easy way of finding the images of their particular interest. Although I prefer the layout of the portfolio pictured at the top, I really like the photos taken from the photographer who has created the portfolio pictured t the bottom. The photographer has chosen their lighting carefully as some of his photos feature sunsets that are especially dramatic against the chosen landscapes. The images above are templates from www.photoshelter.com/templates/
  • 4. Existing Product These images are examples of photography printed on clothing. This is one of my original ideas that has been further influenced by the images shown on this website. An element of this product that I could perhaps use on my own is the way that the photographs are displayed on the item. Although using just a basic photograph printed on a T-Shirt is affective, I quite like the idea of using collages or frames. Another thing I could consider is using text in a way that makes my design more unique such as the images shown below. With my own range of products I could perhaps offer my own variety of colors and styles of clothing too. The website design is simple and the navigation bar is easy to use therefore my own product will be very similar to this design and although pricing is an aspect I should consider later I still think that these prices are reasonable. The images displayed are taken from www.maxphoto.co.uk/photo-gifts/photo-clothing.html
  • 5. Existing Product This photography website features various links to tutorials and walkthroughs that are designed to help photographers that have just started or overall less experienced which is an element that I could use in my own product however I dislike the design of this web page as personally I think I could look a lot more professional if different fonts and colors are used. From this website I can gather ideas on how a website can improve which means that it has influenced me differently to the other existing products I have talked about however similar to this product my website will have the same basic concept of showcasing and explaining different photos. My product much like this will be have various themed page. The images above are taken from iphonephotographyschool.com
  • 6. Research Analysis • What common features do the researched products have? • The researched products are aesthetically similar such as the photos chosen for the website, portfolio and magazine, the layout of the photos are also similar as the products focus more on the photography aspect of the product rather than the text that is featured however products like magazines and websites do require some text at least but personally I think its more about the quality of the text and the information it gives you rather than the quantity. • What aspects of the research will you include within your on work? • The aspects of research I hope to use in my products are the aesthetics of both the layout and photography. I have decided to include a magazine in my range of products as I have drawn a lot of influence from the website featured on the first slide. It will have a very similar layout however it will include my own explanations and photographs.
  • 8. Audience research • Observation: 90% of people who responded to my survey are aged 16-19. • What this says about my audience: A lot of the responses where from young people who are at the age of still being in education or leaving shortly. This implies that my audience will have, or certainly heard of, social networking like Instagram and other that are photography based but less mainstream. I know this because social networking of any kind is extremely popular with this type of age range. • How will your product appeal to this audience: I can analyse aspects of social networking that is favourable by my target audience and include these influences in my own product. I could also chose themes to my collection of images that also appeal to people of this age.
  • 9. Audience research • Observation: 80% of people that responded to my survey are interested in photography. • What this says about my audience: This says that my audience would be willing to view and use my range of products as from the responses I can see it’s a likeable subject amongst students however I can not tell from this information what themes in photography are preferred by this audience. • How will your product appeal to this audience: This question basically shows that an audience of this type Is just generally interested in photography of any kind as my question does not specify what kinds of subjects however this is certainly a good start as I know that as long as my product is photography it will still be enjoyed.
  • 10. Audience research • Observation: 70% of people who responded to my survey do use Instagram. • What this says about my audience: As predicted I can see that Instagram is in fact a popular social networking site/application amongst my audience which confirms that people of that specific age range already have some kind of experience with photography. Instagram is the kind of social network where it gives you suggestions due to what you have recently liked and although a lot of users post things like selfies and random photographs, there are countless photography pages that are themed and those that are not still carefully use certain photography elements to their posts such as angling and lighting. This basically tells me that people generally like this platform as it has easy navigation and interesting photography. • How will your product appeal to this audience: As previously mentioned I can take influences from popular social media platforms and due to this response I will specifically take influences from this platform.
  • 11. Audience research • Observation: Photos of the natural environment is the most favourable topic. • What this says about my audience: With this information I can take a step forward with my research as this response identified the most favourable topic but only 50% of respondents have chosen this topic which made me consider featuring more than one theme with my range of products however there is no second favourable topic because this response shows there as a tie between another three. This means that I will only stick to one theme as I will appeal to very specific audience with a strong following. • How will your product appeal to this audience: Now that I have identified a popular interest I can now revolve my products around that specific subject.
  • 12. Audience research • Observation: The majority of respondents prefer pictures with selective lighting instead of those being edited with filters. • What this says about my audience: Again this further specifies what type of photographs my target audience would prefer to be featured in my range of products. • How will your product appeal to this audience: My choice of photos should be those of natural landscapes and anything nature inspired. The ideas that come to mind are sun rise, sun sets, flowers, sunshine and perhaps landscapes featuring dramatic weather.
  • 13. Audience research • Observation: Portfolio is the most favourable way of presenting photography. • What this says about my audience: This says that my audience prefers the layout of a photography portfolio rather than a website but it also suggests that maybe my target audience prefer a product that is less text orientated. This also shows the opposite for photography printed on clothing which is understandable for young people aged 16-19, as this was one of my initial ideas I have decided to scrap that idea and feature a magazine in my range of product as it has shown to be more enjoyable. • How will your product appeal to this audience: Due to the response from this survey question I have decided to not produce a product that features photography on clothing and instead go ahead with the production of a magazine.
  • 14. Audience research • Observation: Natural landscapes are the most favourable of the topics listed on the question. • What this says about my audience: Amongst a range of more subject areas, natural landscapes still remains to be the most popular choice with my target audience. As this answer has been favourable in two separate questions it has finalised my decision to choose this specific theme. • How will your product appeal to this audience: From the survey I have found that photography themed around the natural environment is the best choice.
  • 15. Audience research • Observation: 70% of respondents have visited or posted on a photography website. • What this says about my audience: This shows that my audience will be able to use my range of products with ease due to past experience which includes things like navigation, commenting, liking, posting etc. • How will your product appeal to this audience: Due to my responses I know that my audience have previous experience with browsing websites which is expected of the specific age range that my product will appeal to therefore a result of this would to be producing a website with a basic template and navigation tools.
  • 16. Audience research • Observation: 70% of respondents have heard of Pinterest. • What this says about my audience: Pinterest is more of a collection of themed photographs in which you choose various different subject areas upon signing up and Pinterest will display the photographs or paintings of your chosen themes every so often. This shows that my audience will perhaps enjoy browsing a photography portfolio as Pinterest has a similar concept in which many portfolios are combined together and inserted into one platform. • How will your product appeal to this audience: As well as using Instagram as an influence for my website, I can use Pinterest as an influence for my portfolio by featuring similar layout.
  • 17. Audience research • Observation: 80% of respondents do enjoy browsing various different artworks. • What this says about my audience: This tells me that my audience also enjoy browsing artwork which is not a question I previously asked but the responses implies that this is another subject area that young people of my specific age range do enjoy. • How will your product appeal to this audience: After adding this question I can possibly add art related photography in my range of products.
  • 19. Interview 1 • What aspect of the naturally environment do you like to see in photography? Yorkshire moors landscape • Do you like bright and colourful photos or dark and soothing such as the night sky and moonlight lit landscapes or environments? depends on what kind of tone the image is going for but the colourful photos tend to be better in my opinion • Do you often take similar photographs yourself, whether it be on your phone or camera? I take images on my IPad or Phone for making special Effects later on • Do you know any local photographers? No • If so what type of photographs do they take, If not, is photography something you'd like to gain more knowledge or experience in • Not Really, I mean it can be useful but I prefer to concentrate on other things
  • 20. Interview 1 • Observation: • My audience would like to see photographs of our local environment. • What this says about my audience: • My audience would prefer local environments as the north Yorkshire moors was mentioned. This also implies that my audience has a good eye for colour and contrasts as the North Yorkshire moors has a mixture of tones as some parts are very dark colours such as dark reds and greens whilst some parts have rich greens and bright yellows. • How will your product appeal to this audience: • Photography on the North Yorkshire moors is something I will have to consider as it is not too far away. As well as the survey responses, this answer also implies that my audience would prefer raw, unedited photography considering that the moors is naturally rich in colour.
  • 21. Interview 2 • What aspect of the naturally environment do you like to see in photography? Trees, Mountains lakes maybe animals of sorts • Do you like bright and colourful photos or dark and soothing such as the night sky and moonlight lit landscapes or environments? I like both equally because one has the sky and the moon and the stars which is great in itself and the ones in daylight are great because you get lots of detail of everything you see • Do you often take similar photographs yourself, whether it be on your phone or camera? I usually take pictures on my phone mainly because my camera is shit and I only really take pictures of large landscapes during the day • Do you know any local photographers? No as far as I know • If so what type of photographs do they take, If not, is photography something you'd like to gain more knowledge or experience in? • Yes I would like to gain more knowledge on the topic of photography because it is a fun and interesting topic which you can take anywhere.
  • 22. Interview 2 • Observation: • My audience would be more than willing to gain further knowledge of photography. • What this says about my audience: • This says that my audience already has little experience with photography and are certain in what they would like to see in my range of products. • How will your product appeal to this audience: • I will feature natural landscapes and as things like trees and lakes and areas such as the moors were mentioned, I will try my hardest to feature all of these aspects of nature into my own range of products.
  • 23. Audience Profile Category Demographic Content to appeal to this audience Age Range 16-19 • Aspects of nature that make up for an overall pleasant experience of viewing although this content can appeal to anybody, this was the age range in which I received the majority of my responses. Gender Male/Female • My content will appeal to both genders as nature inspired photography is not gender specific. As both genders are my primary audience I will not change the use of colours or tones to influence a primary audience such as using colours that can be considered more feminine. Psychographic Socially conscious Type A • Anything nature inspired as this group care about the environment very much. Social Status Social status of any kind • Again my product can be enjoyed by someone of any social status as it does not feature subjects based on materialism as nothing in my range of products would be up for purchasing.
  • 25. Research Evaluation • Give an overview of how you conducted your research. Discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each method – Product Research – The products I researched were; photography magazine, photography portfolio, photography website and a website in which you can print your own photographs on an item of your choice which featured things like t-shirts, sandals and cups. The strengths of researching these products are that I could gain some knowledge on how each product is presented for example: navigation, templates, search filters and colour schemes. Another aspect of research that was also helpful was being able to view popular themes amongst these types of products such as architecture, street art, nature inspired photography and contemporary art photography. A weakness of this method of research was finding the right target market as photography comes with a a large range of topics and styles. – Questionnaires – A strength of this aspect of research was that by asking specific questions I could firstly find out my target audience and what exactly they would like to see in my range of products by asking questions like; do you use photo sharing platforms such as Instagram?, do you prefer natural lighting in photographs instead of the use of filters? And what types of photos do you like to take? The responses from my questions is really important information as I can narrow down the features that I will include in my product by finding out exactly what my audience would and would not like to see therefore getting rid of or changing ideas that are the least favourable. The weaknesses of this method of research are That the respondents must receive the link to my survey and as the only recipient of my link were students in my class, it narrows down my target audience to that specific age range. There is also no way to tell how truthful my answers are which means I could either have a much larger or smaller target audience than I was initially lead to believe. – Interviews – Unlike the questionnaires, the interviews are much more personal as I can closely asses the truthfulness of my answers by having the individual sit and properly think about their answers as well as asking them questions. Another strength of this aspect of research is that my questions are more in depth to those featured in my survey as they are more detailed questions that link to previous answers to give me a deeper insight into what my audience would like to see in my range of products. Weaknesses of this aspect of research is that I am limited to the people I can get to conduct my survey and the answers are very much opinion based which may effect my following decisions there is a chance that the two individuals that conduct my survey might not have any knowledge or may dislike photography.
  • 26. Research Evaluation – What sort of a response did you get? – Overall I had generally positive responses to my survey, I seem to have a very large target audience as photography has proven to be a common interest amongst the students that conducted my survey. I know this because my answers were quite consistent in terms of the likeliness of the subject. The questions that included a range of themes were also very on sided as I was able to make the final decision of choosing to base my products on the natural environment due to it consistently being the most favourable subject. I also could make the decision to feature raw unedited photos which is something that proved to be favourable amongst the students that conducted my survey. The interview questions also generated a positive response as from this I know what specific things want to be featured in my products and that my audience is also willing to gain further knowledge and experience in this kind of photography. – How did you distribute your survey? Give an advantage and a disadvantage – I distributed my survey via blackboard, the links posted directed the respondent to survey monkey which is the website I used to create and collect my responses from my survey. A strength of distributed my survey in this way is that it was a quick and easy process however as previously mentioned, my survey could only be sent to students via blackboard which narrows down the respondents to students who were notified in my class and elsewhere. This meant that it was difficult to have respondents of various ages as the majority of students in my class are aged between 16-19 however there was one aged 20+ but it is impossible to tell which answers this student chose.
