2. Discovery of Canada Canada was discovered by Vikings. The first European Viking to come to North America was Leif Ericson. No one knew about this discovery so Canada was forgotten until1497 when an Italian man named John Cabot sailed west from Bristol, England. The voyage led to the rediscovery of the eastern shores of Canada.
3. Canadian Food One type of Canadian food is poutine.It comes from Quebec, and is French fries with gravy and a special type of cheese on top. Ottawa is known for making beaver tails. Maple syrup is made from maple tree sap in eastern Canada. Tim Horton's is a Canadian coffee and donut restaurant. On commercials they say, “Always fresh, always Tim Hortons.”
4. Canadian hockey One of Canada's national sports is Ice Hockey. Wayne Gretzky is Canadian and is the best hockey player to ever play the sport. He is known as “The Great One” He won the Stanley Cup 4 times with the Edmonton Oilers. (Stanley Cup = gold medal for hockey)
5. Terry Fox Terry Fox is a very famous Canadian. He got cancer in his leg so it was amputated when he was only 19. They gave him an artificial leg. He started running across Canada to raise money for cancer research. Unfortunately he got sick when he was still running and passed away. Every year since his death we do a Terry Fox run to raise money for cancer research.
6. Marathon of Hope The Marathon of Hopestarted as a dream – two friends (Terry running and his friend driving the van), a 42 km section of highway every day, and the belief that they could make it across Canada.
