Professional Ethics in
Computing
TOPICS COVERED
UNITS
• ENGINEERING ETHICS
• ENGINEERING AS SOCIAL EXPERIMENT
• SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES AND RIGHTS
• GLOBAL ISSUES
• Evolution of human values
• Morality and Ethics
• Why do people behave
unethically
• Moral dilemma- The problem of
vagueness ,the problem of
conflicting reasons, the problem
of disagreement.
ENGINEERING ETHICS
Kohlberg’s theory
Moral development in human being occurs over age and experience. Kohlberg
suggested there are three levels of moral development, namely pre-
conventional, conventional, and post-conventional, based on the type of
reasoning and motivation of the individuals in response to moral questions.
Gilligan’s theory
According to Gilligan’s studies, men had a tendency to solve problems by applying abstract
moral principles
Men were found to resolve moral dilemma by choosing the most important moral rule, overriding
other rules.
In contrast, women gave importance to preserve personal relationships with all the
people involved.
Engineering as
Social
Experimentation
A test under controlled conditions that is made to demonstrate
a known truth, to examine the validity of a hypothesis, or to
determine the efficacy of something previously untried.
Failures in Project
• Partial ignorance
• Uncertainty
• Continuous monitory
• Learning from the past
CODE OF ETHICS
5 CANONS
• INTEGRITY
• COMPETENCE
• INDIVIDUALS RESPONSIBILITY
• PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITY
• HUMAN CONCERN
Safety, Responsibilities and Rights
RISKS
• Voluntary risk
• Personal Risk
• Acceptable Risk
• Job related Risk•
The knowledge about acceptance level of risk is useful to engineers.
Safety was defined as the risk that is known and judged as acceptable. •
Probability of safety = 1 – Probability of risk= Probability of occurrence ×Consequence in
magnitude
RISK ANALYSIS
• Scenario analysis (predicting the possible occurrence)
• Failure modes and effect analysis
• Fault tree analysis (“events” and “logic gates”)
• Event tree analysis
What is Risk-Benefit Analysis?
Risk-benefit analysis is a technique, similar to ‘cost- benefit analysis’ used to
analyze the risk in a project and to determine whether the project should be carried
out or not.
GLOBAL ISSUES
Important Dimensions of Global Issues:
1.Multinational corporations
2.Environmental ethics
3.Computer ethics
4. Weapons development
RELATIVE VALUES
• ETHICAL RELATIVISM (law or custom)
• DESCRIPTIVE RELATIVISM (cultural values)
• MORAL RELATIONALISM (all factors)
COMPUTER ETHICS: •The study of ethical issues that are associated primarily with computing
machines and the computing profession.
