Telefónica is the second Telco Operator in R&D effort and the second ICT
company by participation in the 7th Framework Programme promoted by the
European Commission
Telefónica foresaw the huge potential of Smart Cities and embarked in one
of its earlier initiatives, Smart Santander project, with the initial focus on
populating the city with sensors as a first step towards creating a Smart City
The next step was being able to obtain value from the sensors’ data and at
this stage, the platform becomes the key element, therefore Telefónica
promoted FI-WARE, lead by Telefónica and engaging many stakeholders
(as seen last week in FI-WARE event in Santander)
And finally, we are working in innovation projects to help democratize the

The FI-PPP is the biggest ICT project promoted
by the EU.
It’s aim is to position Europe in the Internet
Economy, allowing us to capture new
opportunities in the Future Internet, derived from
digitalization of a wide set of economy sectors
The project comprises an open and standard
platform (FI-WARE) and a series of use-cases
that use the platform as the main foundation.

FI-WARE integrates a number of components from several enabling
technologies: Cloud Computing, Internet of Things, Big Data,
Security…
These enablers are already available for developers for the creation of
new services
Over the next months, EC will devote 100 € million to fostering this
ecosystem
