Your body is made of tiny living units called cells. The cells are so small
that you cannot see them with your naked eyes. The different cells do
different functions.
A group of cells of the same kind doing the same function makes up the
tissue. Tissues functioning together makes up an organ. The eyes, ears,
nose, skin and tongue are the sense organs. The muscles and bones are

Your body is made up of several systems. What organs make up each system? What do these organs

THE SKELETAL SYSTEM
Look at the diagram carefully. This diagram shows some of the
major bones in your body. Can you name these bones?
When you talk about the bones that make up the skeletal
system, you are simply talking about the skeleton. SKELETON is
made up of many bones that are joined together to make a
structure.

 To give your body shape and support.

 Some bones protect some vital parts or internal organs
of your body.

Components of Human Skeleton:
Human skeleton is composed of three main components; Bones, Associated
cartilages and Joints.
Bones:
Bone is a tough and rigid form of connective tissue. It is the weight bearing organ
of human body and it is responsible for almost all strength of human skeleton.
Cartilages:
Cartilage is also a form of connective
tissue but is not as tough and rigid as
bone. Bones are highly mineralized
with calcium salts while cartilages are
not.
Joints:
Joints are important components of human skeleton because they make the
human skeleton mobile. A joint occurs between “two or more bones”, “bone and
cartilage” and “cartilage and cartilage”.

Imagine if you did not have any muscle. How would you look? You would look like a human
skeleton. The illustration below shows your MUSCULAR SYSTEM.
Muscles make up the muscular system. Your bone are your support as you move. It is the
muscle attached to the bones that move them. Without the muscles, you cannot do anything.
There are two kinds of muscles. The voluntary and the involuntary muscles.
Voluntary muscles are the ones that you can control. Most of them move your bones
around. If you want to run, walk, ride a bike or wave your arms around, it is your
voluntary muscles which move your arms, legs and body around. But they can't do
that unless your brain sends the right muscles the messages to 'contract' or 'relax'.
Involuntary muscles don't need the brain to send them messages. They know their job
and they keep right on doing it. Example is, the muscles in your heart, which keep
blood pumping round your body.

We need air to live. The gas in the air which we
need to breathe is called oxygen. We could not
live without oxygen. In contrast, carbon dioxide
is a gaseous waste produced in our body. It is
carried by blood to the lungs. There, it is expelled
in our body.

Function of the Respiratory System
The function of the human respiratory system is to transport air into the lungs and to facilitate the diffusion
of Oxygen into the blood stream. It also receives waste Carbon Dioxide from the blood and exhales it.
Parts of the Upper Respiratory Tract
 Mouth, nose & nasal cavity: The function of this part of the
system is to warm, filter and moisten the incoming air
 Pharynx: Here the throat divides into the trachea (wind
pipe) and oesophagus (food pipe). There is also a small flap
of cartilage called the epiglottis which prevents food from
entering the trachea
 Larynx: This is also known as the voice box as it is where
sound is generated. It also helps protect the trachea by
producing a strong cough reflex if any solid objects pass the
epiglottis.
Parts of the Lower Respiratory Tract
 Trachea: Also known as the windpipe this is the tube which
carries air from the throat into the lungs.
 Bronchi: The trachea divides into two tubes called bronchi,
one entering the left and one entering the right lung.
 Bronchioles: Tertiary bronchi continue to divide and
become bronchioles, very narrow tubes, less than 1
millimeter in diameter.
 Alveoli: Individual hollow cavities contained within alveolar
sacs (or ducts). Alveoli have very thin walls which permit
the exchange of gases Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide.
 Diaphragm: The diaphragm is a broad band of muscle
which sits underneath the lungs, attaching to the lower ribs,
sternum and lumbar spine and forming the base of the
thoracic cavity.

How does the circulatory system help us grow,
enjoy and be productive in the world that we live
in? First, let us define first what this system is.
THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM is the transport system
of the body. The term “cardiovascular” is a
combination of two word; “Cardio” (heart) and
“vascular” (vessels). Its major parts are the heart,
the blood, and the blood vessels (arteries, veins
and capillaries)
COMPONENTS:
HEART: The heart is the key organ in the
circulatory system. As a hollow, muscular pump,
its main function is to propel blood throughout the
body.
BLOOD VESSELS: These are the passageways of
blood. They are found all over the body. It has 3
kinds:
 Arteries-Carry blood away from the heart
 Veins- Carry blood back to the heart
 Capillaries- smallest blood vessels where
exchange of nutrients and waste take place
BLOOD: Blood is a specialized tissue of body that
exists in fluid form. It has 3 kinds:
 Reb Blood Cells- carry oxygen to the body
 White Blood Cells- fight infections and
microorganisms that enter the body
 Platelets- useful in blood clotting to stop
the loss of blood in the body

 Vagina: This muscular tube receives the penis

DIGESTIVE SYSTEM. The purpose of the digestive system is to turn the food you eat into something useful for the
body. When you eat, your body uses this system to digest food so your cells can use it to make energy. The organs
involved in this system include the mouth, stomach, and intestines.
URINARY SYSTEM. The purpose of the urinary system is to filter out excess fluid and other substances from your
bloodstream. The organs found in this system are the kidneys, ureters, urinary bladder, and urethra.
NERVOUS SYSTEM. The nervous system is the control center of the human body. It is made up of the brain, spinal
cord, and nerves. It receives and interprets stimuli and transmits impulses to organs.
REPRODUCTIVE SYSTEM. The human reproductive system ensures that humans are able to reproduce and survive
as a species. It is made up of organs such as the uterus, penis, ovaries, and testes.
RESPIRATORY SYSTEM. The primary function of the respiratory system is to supply the blood with oxygen in order
for the blood to deliver oxygen to all parts of the body. The respiratory system does this through breathing. It consists
of the nose, larynx, trachea, diaphragm, bronchi, and lungs.
