What is Game?
 Rixon (1981 in Zhu, 2012 p. 802) argues “A game is an
activity carried out by co-operating and competing
decision-makers, seeking to achieve, within a set of rules,
their objectives.”
 Noemi & Maximo (2014) define “A game is a physical or
mental contest played according to specific rules, with the
goal of amusing or rewarding the participant.”
Educational Game
 “The term educational games is commonly used for computer
games with an educational purpose, which is computer used for
other purposes than only pure entertainment.” (Purdy, 2007 in
Bjoerner & Hansen, 2010)
 “Games can be found to give practice in all the skills, in all the
stages of the teaching and learning and for many types of
communication.” (Wright et al, 2006 in Zhu, 2012, p. 802)
The Importance and Advantages of Game for
English Learning
According to Al-bulushi & Al-Issa (2017), games play the
following roles in language learning:
 They make the combination of linguistic psychological and
social elements in language learning.
 Improve interaction and cooperation among learners.
 Games motivate the learners in the learning process.
 Reduce anxiety in the learning process.
Cont...
 Make the learning process to be more learner centered.
 Enhance learners cognitive, psychomotor and affective
development and improving class dynamics.
 Improve interpersonal communication.
 Enhance task based learning.
Some disadvantages of using games in language teaching-learning according
to Cam and Tran (2017):
 When the choice of game is not done properly the specific learning objectives may
not be fulfilled.
 When it is not clearly organized the students may not get what is learnt. (content)
 When it is too general the students cannot get the focus of the lesson.
 If not selected based on the age of the learners it may not motivate the learners in
the learning process
 Noisy and disorders may occur if there is no proper organization
The Disadvantages of Game for English Learning
So....
SHOULD WE OPT FOR THE USE OF GAMES IN LANGUGE
TEACHING?
Since the advantages are more than the disadvantages, games
should be encouraged in language teaching. Moreover the
disadvantages can be controlled.
Jeopardy! Game
Jeopardy! is an American television game show created by
Merv Griffin. The show features a quiz competition in which
contestants are presented with general knowledge clues in the
form of answers, and must phrase their responses in the form
of questions. The original daytime version debuted on NBC on
March 30, 1964, and aired until January 3, 1975. Both NBC
versions and the weekly syndicated version were hosted by Art
Fleming.
With over 7,000 episodes aired, the daily syndicated version of
Jeopardy! has won a record 33 Daytime Emmy Awards. In 2013,
the program was ranked No. 45 on TV Guide's list of the 60
greatest shows in American television history. Jeopardy! has
also gained a worldwide following with regional adaptations in
many other countries.
Homegrown Version of Jeopardy
 Three contestants each take their place behind a lectern, with the
returning champion occupying the leftmost lectern (from the
viewer's perspective).
 The contestants compete in a quiz game comprising three
rounds: Jeopardy!, Double Jeopardy!, and Final Jeopardy! The
material for the clues covers a wide variety of topics, including
history and current events, the sciences, the arts, popular
culture, literature, and languages, and the host will regularly
remind contestants of topics or place emphasis on category
themes before the start of the round.
Procedure of Jeopardy Game
Show
How to Play Jeopardy Game in the Classroom
 The teacher divides the class into 5 groups;
 The teacher explains about the game/procedure on how to play
the game; there are two rounds for these game; the total
questions for the first round are 15, the total questions for the
second round are 10;
 The teacher gives a chance for the first group to choose the topic
that they want, and the point (question); then second, third,
fourth, and fifth; this can be done three times;
 For the second round, the volunteers from each group will be
chosen depending who raises their hand first/faster;
Revere (2004) suggests that playing Jeopardy in class improves
student understanding and therefore course satisfaction.
- Rotter (2004) suggests that such activities can be benefit for all
students and provide immediate feedback .
- Tetteh (2009) and Murphy (2005) note that students become more
engaged and therefore learn more when playing instructional
games.
- It makes the students get ready for a test, review prior
information, or even be introduced to a new unit.
