2. Objective 6: Lawyering Skills Program
draft GUIDING PRINCIPLES - Objective 6
• Design a space to support advanced technological and interactive programs where
students can receive hands-on learning
• Support the concept of experiential versus lecture-based learning, and align with the law school’s
pedagogical stance as a ‘practice-ready’ graduate program
• House state-of-the-art technology that is being used in real courtrooms
• Plan for varying uses and flexible work spaces, in particular for teams of 4-8, and groups of 16 and 25-30
• Create a realistic, simulated courtroom experience
• Be able to hold mock trials and competitions in a space that accurately reflects an actual courtroom
• Provide a space for informal learning, gathering, and research
• Create spaces for informal research and study for smaller groups (4-8)
• Feature the Lawyering Skills Program as a distinguishing asset of the Law School
• Create physical spaces that facilitate the pedagogical focus on advocacy and courtroom training, as well as
provide naming opportunities
• Establish the program as a source of pride that hosts competitions and events with other law schools
• Leverage the physical space in support of the law school’s goal to become nationally renowned for its
litigation and advocacy training

23. Discovery & Assessment
Site Visit and Interview Conclusions
• Rooms currently being used as courtrooms are simply classrooms and offices that are adjusted
and modified for use as courtrooms; this makeshift use can be frustrating for the users and
contributes to the overall low occupancy of classroom space, and overall provides an inefficient
use of space.
• Aside from 1 or 2 auxiliary rooms (storage, conference room, etc), the rooms currently used
for STEP and litigation courses currently provide enough raw square footage for courtroom-
style classes. Based on occupancy loads (STEP observations only), there is in fact plenty of
total square footage. Providing rooms properly sized and equipped for these trial-type
courses would mitigate this issue, and would increase space efficiencies.
• The distance between current rooms contributes to a sense of disconnection within the program
and the Law School
• Centralizing the Moot Courts and potentially providing an interactive hub that connects all of
these rooms would both physically and symbolically strengthen the identity of the Law School
• There exists inadequate technology and furniture these rooms, which require realistic
courtroom setups
• Given the Law School’s desire to be a skills-oriented, courtroom-ready program, the proper
spatial arrangements of a real courtroom must be made, and current technology should be
housed in these rooms
