Carriers will forge their own partnerships around
small cells, looking to share the hefty costs of building out what
amounts to a new tier of their wireless networks. In some cases,
they may end up sharing cells mounted on streetlights or in
public buildings with other operators, cities or businesses.
The carrier deals could spawn new market dynamics that
will ripple through the supply chain. Smart semiconductor
makers that anticipate the waves and carefully ride them to
new opportunities will avoid getting washed away.
Inside the small cells
To date, cellular basestations have usually come in one
size, owned and run by individual carriers that placed them in
sealed outdoor boxes at the foot of antenna towers. These main-
frames of the wireless world came under assault a few years ago
