Pre-Production
Madeleine Ross
This was my second style sheet, in which I
took a more subtle and muted approach
to the color themes. I included colors that
I think compliment each other well and
isn't too bold for the magazine. I think it
looks quite professional which I like,
however my magazine is about art and
culture and is all about creativity, so I do
worry that if I use this one it might look
more like a business magazine than the
artistic material I am going for. I did
include the red and the lighter blue to add
a nice accent and the black and the purple
as the main colors of the magazine, which
most images will go with, but I still am
unsure as to weather it will give of the
appeal that I want it to.
I really like these font choices, although
quite similar to the Traffic Lights theme
from the previous slide. I quite like the
bottom font the most, as some of the
letters are ever so slightly placed higher up
than the other letters, which I think takes
away from the business like colours. I also
like the top font as the letters are really
thin in stance but I like how it contrasts
with the bolder text. I will choose what
colour I use for the text depending on how
my photos come out.
I think I will most likely use the font choices from this
style as I think they go best with my concept, however I
am not sure about some of the colour choices. I like the
blue and the red and I like the black as you will be able
to see text over that easily, however I am not too sure if
the purple makes it look too muted.
This is my first style sheet, where I
was going for a bright and colorful
theme, with green being the main
color with red and orange as accents
for things such as text. I like all of the
colors as they are very bright and
punchy however I think they look too
primary together and could be seen
as slightly premature and childish,
something you would see more in a
kids magazine than a young adult
magazine.I experimented with 3 different fonts in two of
the colors from my color pallet. I think all of
these fonts could work quite well in the
magazine, with the bolder bottom one being
used for titles of articles or headings, and the
slightly thinner ones being used for main text
and quotes or key facts. Over all I do like this color theme
however I wont use it in my project
as I don’t think they match to the
concept of my magazine and look a
little too childish.
This is my third style sheet I made, in which I
tired to incorporate brighter aspects from my
first sheet, the purple and the orange, and
some muted accents such as the cream and
the blue. I do like all these colors however I
don’t know how well they go with each
other. I don’t think they compliment each
other as much as id like, generally the purple
being too light in my opinion, so I could
maybe swap it out with a lighter blue to keep
all the tone the same.I like my text choices and the colors I
have used I think compliment the softer
colors and will be able to be seen on
most of the backgrounds. I think
however the text choice I have made
from the Business style will be a better
fit.
I don’t think I will use this style at all as I
don’t think the aspects I have chosen
suit each other at all or at least in the
way that I would like them too.
Front Cover Layout
I am going to use this layout as I think its simple and
does the job, however to make it fit more with the
conventions of my magazines I am going to add short
headings in between the picture and the bleed line,
summarizing the content inside with single lined
sentences so as to not crowd the front cover. I will also
make the image in the center smaller so I have more
room for my text. Depending on how things go during
production, I may make some changes so it will
compile better, however I am going to make sure to
keep this as the base layout.
Double Page Layout
This is my final experimentation of my
first double page spread, where I talk
about how the fast fashion industry is
effecting climate change. On my first
page will be most of the images I have
taken, reflecting the article and the
quotations, and it will include the
shapes as seen. The second double
page spread will include the main
article and a few images of my own to
match. Unlike in this photo, the
backgrounds to both will be the same
color, however I was struggling to
match the colors up as I am still quite
unconfident with InDesign.
I like the first page layout as I think it sets readers up for what's coming in the article and
from here they can decide weather they want to continue the reading, and it gives me a
chance to use a wide range of edited photos of my own, and edited photos I have found of
the internet. I also like the second page article as I think it looks quite professional, however
when I come to the production stage I may change a few things such as adding more pictures
and the placement and fonts of the title and article text. I think I would also like to continue
with the theme of the colorful shapes onto the second page, however I think I will use less so
as to not take away from the writing, and I will have to learn how to do it in InDesign.

Contingency Planning
Potential Issue Solution
It will probably rain on the day I plan on taking
photos outdoors.
I will have to be aware of water not damaging
the camera so I will use an umbrella when I am
taking images. I will also bring a small cloth or
rag to clean of any water off of the lens.
When writing the article I may find it difficult
to talk about my topics, and run out of
things to talk about.
I will plan what I will write in a rough draft so I
can keep a good balance and don’t get stuck.
I might get stuck when using InDesign. I will practice using it and watch tutorials or ask
for help when I cant work it out myself.
Forget to bring in my Memory Stick, the work
doesn’t save to the stick, or I lose it.
Back up a copy on the computer as well as the
memory stick.
My images don’t look clear enough. I can edit them in photoshop, and by toggling
exposure and contrast ect, I can make them
appear better quality.
Health and Safety
Potential Issue How will the issue be
avoided?
Fast moving cars on the main road. Be careful and look and listen.
Eye strain from the computer. Take regular breaks, drink water to counteract
head aches, and spend time outdoors to relax
and renew my energy.
Cramped and untidy workspace. Clean up anything such as food wrappings or
water bottles, and make sure I only have things
on the desk that I really need.
Water spilling onto the computer. Make sure to have a closed lid water bottle,
and when I'm not drinking, put it away under
the desk or in my bag.
Back Ache Tilt and move my screen to a comfortable
position, sit with correct posture, and keep my
chair at a suitable height.

Editor's Notes

  1. Explore colours and pixel art styles similar to what you want to produce. Discuss these elements in relation to why you chose them and where you may use them in your project. Go over as many pages as you need to.
  2. Mock up of a potential design using the colours and sourced images. Alter this slide to make it appropriate for your planned product types. Use the content established in your style sheet to do this.
