The Taj Mahal is one of the Seven
wonders of the world and is a beautiful
monument built by the Mughals, the
Muslim rulers of India.

north of India, near Shahajahanpur and
25 miles from New Delhi.

4. Why Was It Built?
Shah JahanI was Emperor
during Mughal's period of
greatest prosperity. He was
grief stricken when his third
and most beloved wife
Mumtaz Mahal(Her real
name was Arjumand Banu).
died and had it built in her
memory.
5. Who Was It Made For?
Mumtaz was not queen for long. After
giving birth to Shah Jahan's 14th child, she
died in 1631. She was 39 years old. The
emperor was heartbroken and, the entire
court mourned her death for the next 2
years. During this period, there was no
music, parties or celebrations of any kind
in the entire kingdom.
Shah Jahan ordered that a monument, the
likes of which had never been seen before,
should be built, so that the world would
never forget her.
6. What Is It Made Out Of?
It took 20,000
people 22 years to build
the white marble Taj which
is inlaid with precious stones.
The onion shaped dome roof was
once made of gold, but now it is
made of bronze.
The Taj Mahal cost 32 million
Rupees to build in 1631.
7. Two red sandstone buildings stand beside the main
mausoleum on either side. One, to the west, is a
mosque. The other is a former guesthouse.
8. The lush gardens surrounding the Taj
Mahal have an enormous reflecting pool
which reflects and doubles the beauty of
Taj Mahal.
9. Tombs of Shah Jahan
and Mumtaz Mahal
Inside Taj Mahal you can find lots of beautiful marble engravings like the
one shown here. The engravings are made of different varieties of marbles
which have withstood the test of time.
