5. INTRODUCTION TO PGCIL
POWERGRID is mainly engaged in the business of transmission of power through its EHVAC
/ HVDC transmission network. The company has diversified into telecom business by
leveraging its pan India transmission network through stringing of optical ground wire
(OPGW).
POWERGRID CORPORATION INDIA, LTD, as on 31st October 2022, owns & operates around
1,73,720 cKm of Extra High Voltage (EHV) transmission lines spread over the length and breadth
of the country and 269 EHV AC & HVDC Sub-stations with transformation capacity of 4,89,912
MVA.
The availability of this huge transmission network is consistently maintained over 99% through
the deployment of state-of-the-art operation & maintenance techniques at par with global
standards.
6. IMPORTANT MILESTONE OF PGCIL
Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd has commissioned a 765kV single circuit
transmission line from Raichur in Karnataka to Solapur in Maharashtra on December 31,
2013, thus achieving ‘One Nation – One Grid – One Frequency’.
The southern grid has been synchronously connected to the rest of the grid in the
country through commissioning of the Raichur-Solapur 765kV single circuit
transmission facilitating bulk transfer of power across regional boundaries.
The 208 circuit km line with 765/400kV substations at Raichur and Solapur has been
commissioned five months ahead of its contractual schedule of May 31, 2014. The
project is estimated to cost Rs.815 crore.
With this interconnection, the Indian power system has entered into a new era of
becoming one of the largest operating synchronous grids in the world with about 232
GW of installed power generation capacity.
7. BHEL ACHIEVES MAJOR LANDMARK;
Commissions 765/400 kV Raichur-Sholapur Transmission Link Synchronously-operated
National Grid formed for One Nation-One Grid-One Frequency.
Six months ahead of the contractual schedule, Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL)
has achieved a major milestone in its transmission business by successfully constructing
and commissioning the 765/400kV Substation at Raichur in Karnataka, the Southern end
of the 765 kV Raichur-Sholapur transmission link of POWERGRID.
Significantly, with the commissioning of the 765kV Raichur-Sholapur transmission link,
the Southern Grid has been synchronized with the N-E-W Grid thus forming the
synchronously operated National Grid, thereby fulfilling the ambition of One Nation- One
Grid-One Frequency.
BHEL scope of work in the project included design, engineering, manufacturing, supply,
erection, testing and commissioning of the 765/400 kV Substation package at Raichur.
The project demanded the highest degree of competence in manufacturing and execution
from BHEL's own manufacturing units and numerous sub-vendors.
8. MARKET PERFORMANCE
ECONOMICAL ACHIVEMENT
During FY 2021-22, POWERGRID achieved a turnover of about Rs. 42,335.87 crore.
And Net Profit of Rs. 17,093.76 crore. As on 31.03.2022 Gross Fixed Assets of the company
have also grown to Rs. 2,49,954crore.

DETAILS
10. RAICHUR (765/400) kV SUBSTATION PROJECT BACKGROUND
POWERGRID has been established 765/400 kV sub-station at Askihal village in
Raichur district of Karnataka to meet the power demand in southern region.
As per ESPP (Environmental and social policy & procedures) safety,
POWERGRID corporation of India has carried out social assessment and prepared
rehabilitation action plan for the project affected persons.
Subsequently, POWERGRID initiated implementation of rehabilitation action
plan for the project affected families (PAFs) of 765/400 kV sub-station with an objective of
improving the living standards by providing suitable entitlements and rehabilitation
assistance.
The implementation of RAP ( Rehabilitation Action Plan) for the Raichur sub-
station has been completed during project execution in 2012. The sub-station
commissioned in 2016.

99% efficiency.
DISADVANTAGES OF POWER GRIDS
• Economical losses due to breakdowns.
• Land acquisition will leads to problematical.
• When it comes to transmission lines towers and conductors
may damage due to environmental conditions.
16. SAFETY POLICY
Minimum electrical clearance, as required by the Indian electricity
Rules & regulations, are maintained with respect to the ground, roads railway
lines and other habitats, in the transmission lines of POWERGRID, to ensure
safety of human being & livestock moving, living or working in the vicinity.
17. CONCLUSION
With the completion of Raichur- Solapur 765/400 kV lines India becomes one
of the largest operating synchronous grids in the world (one grid one nation) and
interconnection of internationals grid help in the improvement of economy of the
country as well as it builds positive relationship between neighboring countries by
power sharing/trading.
