- 10. 4.3.2 Blue Flag Support for Marinas Blue Flag status for marinas has been withdrawn by ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ and as such no longer exisits in the UK. Mark Chappelhow, Coastal Programmes Manager, Keep Britain Tidy “ The Blue Flag Marina Scheme has not run in England for a number of years due to no interest in the scheme. If there was enough interest we may review opening the scheme and looking at the administration involved.” (October 2010)
- 12. 4.3.2 Blue Flag Support for Marinas In Cornwall it has been agreed that the; Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS) will be used for watersports centres and activity providers, who would like to achieve a recognised certification. CoaST has supported over; 140 businesses towards this certification (highest number in the UK).

- ACT 4.3 Develop environmental best practice for the marine leisure sector and produce guides and information April – June 2010 Common Acts 4.3.1 Ecomangement guide for nautical structures - CoaST will feed into this process, explore the opportunity to include Visitor Charters as an engagement tool, to be included in guide. Awaiting information from 4.3.2. Due to various complications with instituting the Blue Flag initiative in the UK, Cornwall has officially withdrawn form this action however, we have liaised with Environment lead, with regard to other internationally recognised accreditation and certification schemes, which provide best fit for the purposes of WP 4 in Cornwall. Will signpost and advise businesses accordingly. 4.4.a REAP model presented at CoaST Change for Good event, for the marine leisure industry. (See CoaST presentation evidence folder 4.2) 4.4 b Energy Resilience Audits (ERAs.) Presented at CoaST Change for Good Event. (See CoaST presentation evidence folder 4.2 ) 4.4 b ERAs. Awareness raising and information carried and discussed during all Marine Environmental Champion site visits. Signposted and information provided, as to providers of ERA and case studies. 4.4 b Discussions with Business Link regarding the eligibility criteria / availability of funding for businesses via the Environmental Development Vouchers. In order to assist businesses with the associated costs. 4.4 b Liaison with Transition Training to develop a 10 Point guide for marine leisure businesses to engage with ERAs. 4.3.2.d Meeting with The Green Blue to discuss the way forward to adapt existing tools for Cornwall. 4.3.2. d Ongoing desk based research 4.4 e & f Through a variety of networking opportunities this action is being delivered. e.g. Cornwall AONB, SAC Advisory Panel, VMCAs, Finding Sanctuary stakeholders consultations, Transition Towns. Blue Gym network. 4.4 e & f In partnership with Cornwall Councils Beach Ranger Service and as part of the work underway as Marine Environmental Champions. Recruiting a group of Marine Leisure Businesses in the Widemouth Bay area (North Cornwall), to develop a 'geographic' community of marine leisure businesses. A potential 7 businesses have expressed an interest in becoming involved. This community will then utilise their involvement with NEA2 to influence the wider community - businesses, visitors and residents alike. 4.4 f Marine Environmental Champion business, Global Borders, disseminated best practice during the CoaST Change for Good event to highlight their own activities to deliver a socially and environmentally sound marine leisure business. Jan - March 2010 Common Action Range of activities undertaken to raise awareness on marine leisure activities using the marine champions and the marine charter publication. Local Total of 6 marine champions now signed up to the Champion Agreement. Jan – Oct 09 Common Act Audit of current event guidelines for marine events, plus the hospitality green event toolkit. Local Consideration of marine leisure impacts in relation to current work on footprinting in Cornwall

This is on going through our business training events, workshops, work with Marine Environmental Champion businesses and range of Marine Visitor Charters. Jan – March 2010 Common Further development of programme to assess awareness via surveywork in collaboration with partners including SWCCIP and SWT, using research carried out using the CoaST network. Low awareness in the tourism sector generally of extreme weather impact, in particular. Local Resource depletion work undertaken; training of staff by Global Action plan. ERA (Energy resilience audit) workshop delivered. Collaboration with Business Link on access to Business Development Vouchers to subsidise full ERA cost. Information on further support from the full ERA toolkit publicised across the CoaST network. Development of full NEAII page on CoaST network with links, products, case studies and information. - ACT 4.5 Communicate and promote the organisation of events that will raise the profile and improve the environment credentials of the watersport sector April – June 2010 Common 4.5.1 Sustainable management of nautical events: CoaST is liaising with event guide authors in Cornwall. To assess, current practices. Also continuing information exchange with the Green Blue, to research Best Practice. The Green Blue is working with The Olympics Committee to assist its shore side venues such as Weymouth to be sustainable. CoaST will communicate with Green Blue on this and feed in information to the Environment leads. 4.5.2 Coordinated events: Initiatives Oceanes: CoaST has delivered a joint beach clean with Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) in April. Collected 24 bags of litter at approximately 59kg in total, also recycled one bag of glass and resturned 1 bag "Return to Offender" Campaign.Also involved with education around associated issues through it's Change for Good event. E.g. SAS involved as speakers and also in the Change on the Beaches workshop. Cornwall Council's Beach Ranger Service, as Marine Environmental Champions also played a similar role at this event as did CWT. Additional joint beach clean planned with CWT for early July. See below for more information. (4.7) 4.5.2 Cornwall attended the Environment and Tourism conference in Ayamonte in June 2010. Alex Lake spoke about 'low-I impact watersports tourism' Local 4.6 CoaST gathering information to assess current Best Practice, desk research and phone enquiries. Building upon past experience, such as the compilation of The Greener Events Guide and the establishment of Corporate Cornwall. Meeting with The Green Blue's Sustainable Facilities Officer in April, to assess current best practice for marine events, and learning from their Best Practice for Green Marine Events. 4.6 Bespoke Visitor Charter for the Henri Lloyd Falmouth Week handbook 2010. (750 copies) Liaison with The Green Blue. Regarding the recent release of Henri Lloyds' Environmental Policy, The Green Blue were instrumental in writing this, The Policy makes reference to ensuring Henri Lloyd sponsored events are sustainable. Liaising with The Green Blue about 2011 Henri Lloyd Falmouth Week, to 'Green' the event, and possible joint working opportunities. 4.6 & 4.8 Meeting with Falmouth BID Manager, to assess the possibility of working together next year to make Falmouth Week 2011 more sustainable. 4.7 & 4.8 Joint beach clean with Surfers Against Sewage in April at Mawgan Porth, near Newquay. Information disseminated across The Blue Gym network. Also disseminated by a CoaST member business across their own website blog. This business is based on the West Cornwall coast and is keen to promote responsible behaviour, whilst accessing the coastal environment. 4.7 Planning work for joint beach clean with CWT, South West Water and the Beach Care Project (Joint project between the EA and Tidy Britain) this will be held at Porthtowan, planned date 03/07/10. 4.8 Bespoke Visitor Charter for the Henri Lloyd Falmouth Week handbook 2010. Will be distributed to all competitors and host sailing clubs. Joint editorial with CMN also included in this publication to promote the NEA2 Project. 4.8 Working with Cornwall Wildlife Trust through their role as Marine Environmental Champions and the Your Shore Project for Cornwall's Voluntary Marine Conservation Areas (VMCAs).To promote best practice. Also examining methodologies by which CWT can assist fellow Marine Environmental Champions to ensure their own business operations minimiser their impact upon the marine environment. 4.9 Liaison with all existing award schemes in Cornwall to integrate a Sustainable marine leisure award. Feedback form all schemes, is that all schemes are at capacity. Therefore we will encourage our businesses, to enter the various award schemes. Beach clean planned in conjunction with Surfers Against Sewage. Target: Local residents, and staff from local businesses. 7,000 copies of the marine visitor charter printed and distributed. Generic charter being used by all champions. First tailored visitor charter developed for one of the champions. Green Blue campaign now jointly promoted across the CoaST network, and on website. - ACT 4.5 Communicate and promote the organisation of events that will raise the profile and improve the environment credentials of the watersport sector April – June 2010 Common 4.5.1 Sustainable management of nautical events: CoaST is liaising with event guide authors in Cornwall. To assess, current practices. Also continuing information exchange with the Green Blue, to research Best Practice. The Green Blue is working with The Olympics Committee to assist its shore side venues such as Weymouth to be sustainable. CoaST will communicate with Green Blue on this and feed in information to the Environment leads. 4.5.2 Coordinated events: Initiatives Oceanes: CoaST has delivered a joint beach clean with Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) in April. Collected 24 bags of litter at approximately 59kg in total, also recycled one bag of glass and resturned 1 bag "Return to Offender" Campaign.Also involved with education around associated issues through it's Change for Good event. E.g. SAS involved as speakers and also in the Change on the Beaches workshop. Cornwall Council's Beach Ranger Service, as Marine Environmental Champions also played a similar role at this event as did CWT. Additional joint beach clean planned with CWT for early July. See below for more information. (4.7) 4.5.2 Cornwall attended the Environment and Tourism conference in Ayamonte in June 2010. Alex Lake spoke about 'low-I impact watersports tourism' Local 4.6 CoaST gathering information to assess current Best Practice, desk research and phone enquiries. Building upon past experience, such as the compilation of The Greener Events Guide and the establishment of Corporate Cornwall. Meeting with The Green Blue's Sustainable Facilities Officer in April, to assess current best practice for marine events, and learning from their Best Practice for Green Marine Events. 4.6 Bespoke Visitor Charter for the Henri Lloyd Falmouth Week handbook 2010. (750 copies) Liaison with The Green Blue. Regarding the recent release of Henri Lloyds' Environmental Policy, The Green Blue were instrumental in writing this, The Policy makes reference to ensuring Henri Lloyd sponsored events are sustainable. Liaising with The Green Blue about 2011 Henri Lloyd Falmouth Week, to 'Green' the event, and possible joint working opportunities. 4.6 & 4.8 Meeting with Falmouth BID Manager, to assess the possibility of working together next year to make Falmouth Week 2011 more sustainable. 4.7 & 4.8 Joint beach clean with Surfers Against Sewage in April at Mawgan Porth, near Newquay. Information disseminated across The Blue Gym network. Also disseminated by a CoaST member business across their own website blog. This business is based on the West Cornwall coast and is keen to promote responsible behaviour, whilst accessing the coastal environment. 4.7 Planning work for joint beach clean with CWT, South West Water and the Beach Care Project (Joint project between the EA and Tidy Britain) this will be held at Porthtowan, planned date 03/07/10. 4.8 Bespoke Visitor Charter for the Henri Lloyd Falmouth Week handbook 2010. Will be distributed to all competitors and host sailing clubs. Joint editorial with CMN also included in this publication to promote the NEA2 Project. 4.8 Working with Cornwall Wildlife Trust through their role as Marine Environmental Champions and the Your Shore Project for Cornwall's Voluntary Marine Conservation Areas (VMCAs).To promote best practice. Also examining methodologies by which CWT can assist fellow Marine Environmental Champions to ensure their own business operations minimiser their impact upon the marine environment. 4.9 Liaison with all existing award schemes in Cornwall to integrate a Sustainable marine leisure award. Feedback form all schemes, is that all schemes are at capacity. Therefore we will encourage our businesses, to enter the various award schemes.
