Introduction
• Micro-propagation is the production of whole plant from small
selection of plant such as a stem tip, node, meristem, embryo, or
even a seed.
• It is the only commercially viable method of clonal propagation of
most of the horticultural crops. E.g. Orchids

Advantages of micro-propagation:-
1. Quick mass multiplication
2. Off season plant production
3. Production of morphological similar
plants
4. Disease free plants
5. Useful for those species that are
difficult to grow through seed
6. Breeding cycle can be shortened
7. In vitro culture can be stored for long
time through cryopreservation
Disadvantages of Micro-propagation:-
1. Very expensive and have high labour cost
2. An infected plant produce infected progeny
3. Not all plants can be successfully tissue cultured
4. Plants are not autotrophic
5. More problem in inducing root
Application of Micro-propagation :-
1. Somaclonal variation
2. Germplasm conservation
3. Mutation breeding
4. Inducing breeding
5. Embryo culture
6. Haploid and diploid production
7. Genetic engineering
8. Production of secondary metabolites
9. Production of disease free plants
10.In vitro Hybridization –protoplast fusion
