FOREWORD
Dear runners,
On 1 December 2013, you will be among more than 54,000 runners in the Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore
(SCMS) 2013. I wish you all the best for a run that will challenge both your mental and physical limits.
Since its inception, the SCMS has grown tremendously. This marquee sporting event is now one of Asia’s top road races
and it firmly holds its place on our nation’s sporting calendar.
The consistent number of runners for the event is testament to its success. It is encouraging to see such a huge number
of runners lining up once again this year. We call the SCMS the ‘People’s Race’ and it is certainly that. The event shows
that sport truly is a powerful platform to break down any perceived barriers. It is also encouraging to see a healthy sporting
culture across all ages, from young participants in the Kids Dash right to senior runners taking part in the marathon.
Beyond local shores, the SCMS also attracts its fair share of international participants. The International Association of
Athletics Federation (IAAF) accorded the SCMS Gold Label status in 2011 and 2012. We are proud to rank alongside other
famous marathon cities such as Beijing, Berlin, Boston, Tokyo and London. This is a reflection of the commitment and
dedication of all involved in making the event possible, from the sponsors, the thousands of volunteers to the staff of the
Singapore Sports Council.
Sport plays a vital role in shaping the value and character of our people and our society.
The SCMS is an event that perfectly demonstrates this special quality of sport and
I look forward to witnessing it grow even further in years to come.
Have a great run!

FOREWORD
Welcome to the Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore 2013.
Since 2002, Standard Chartered Bank has played a part in nurturing Singapore’s passion for running. In partnership with
the Singapore Sports Council, we have helped to build the Marathon into a world class event. The Marathon has attained
the Gold Label certification by the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) for the past two years and it was
also awarded the Best Local Sports Event at the recent Singapore Sports Awards 2013. This year, we are also pleased
to welcome on board Spectrum Worldwide as the event organiser and together, we aim to deliver a quality race to the
runners, supporters, volunteers, corporates and the community.
The courage, determination and passion of the runners resonate strongly with what we stand for as an organisation.
It is very much part of our brand promise to be Here for good in the communities we operate. Each year, we are very
encouraged by runners who leverage on the Marathon to raise funds for various charities, and our Standard Chartered
Bank staff runners have also been actively running for good. This year, they have supported a variety of causes including
the Bank’s Seeing is Believing initiative to eliminate avoidable blindness, sports for the visually impaired and underprivileged
youth, and HIV awareness.
Whatever cause you may be running for, or if you are simply running for fitness and fun, event day marks the culmination
of months of training for many, and a full year of preparation for the organisers, volunteers and all who have contributed
to ensure a safe and enjoyable running experience. I would like to thank everyone who has worked tirelessly to make the
Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore such a great success.
See you at the start line on 1 December.

FOREWORD
The Singapore Sports Council (SSC) is delighted to welcome you to the Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore
(SCMS) 2013.
At SSC we understand the dedication, commitment and hours of preparation required to get ready for your respective
race categories. Whether you’re lining up in the Marathon, Half Marathon, Ekiden, 10km or Kids Dash (750m) category,
I applaud you for joining Singapore’s marquee running event and I wish you all the best.
While you have been preparing diligently for your race, we have also been working hard to enhance the SCMS race so that
you continue to have a safe and memorable race experience. With three different start points located across the island,
the various running routes will take runners along some breath-taking backdrops before ending the journey at the Padang.
I am proud to once again see such strong registration numbers this year. The Ekiden race category sold out on the opening
day of registration while a huge number of runners have graduated from running the Half Marathon in 2012 to testing
themselves with the full 42.195km distance in 2013.
It is also inspiring to see so many older runners register for the Marathon, proving once again that age is certainly no barrier.
We have many runners aged over 70, and a number over 80, who will be running 42.195km and I congratulate them on
their determination and passion.
The Half Marathon and 10km categories also reached maximum capacity prior to the close of registration, while the Kids
Dash (750m) continues to appeal to our young runners and their parents.
A lot goes into planning and delivering a successful SCMS. Spectrum Worldwide was granted full responsibility of organising
the event this year, and we are confident that they will build and expand on the
successes of previous editions to provide you with the best race experience
possible.
I would like to thank Spectrum Worldwide for the good work and for engaging
the thousands of volunteers who will be dedicating hours of their own personal
time to contribute to a great run on 1 December. I would also like to express my
gratitude to our fellow Government agencies for their support.
Finally, to all of you who will be racing on 1 December, I look forward to seeing
you at the start line.
Let us all live better through sports!

FOREWORD
Dear runners,
Firstly, congratulations on being part of Singapore’s marquee running event and one of the world’s largest Marathons.
As the official event organiser, our key driving factor during the entire planning process is to deliver the best experience
possible for all participants on Sunday, 1 December.
I’m sure you are all excited the event is finally here after your months of dedicated training and preparation. We are
equally as thrilled to now see all the months of event planning come to fruition for the Standard Chartered Marathon
Singapore 2013.
On behalf of Spectrum Worldwide I would like to thank the Singapore Sports Council and Standard Chartered Bank for
their ongoing support in the build-up to this event.
We have also worked closely alongside various Government agencies, authorities and key stakeholders to facilitate the
entire operations including route and venue management. A running event of this magnitude, staged on closed public
roads across Singapore, would not be possible without their assistance.
A special mention must also be made to thank the thousands of volunteers who give up their own time to provide valuable
assistance during the event. Volunteers are integral to the continued success of the Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore
so if you have the opportunity to personally thank them on race day, please do so.
Once again, congratulations on being part of this outstanding event and I look
forward to seeing you all on Sunday, 1 December.
It is you, the participant, who is the heart and soul of this event. Keep up the
marathon spirit!

Singapore 2013
The Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore (SCMS) is the
nation’s marquee running event and one of the real highlights
of the local sporting calendar. It is owned by the Singapore
Sports Council (SSC) and organised by Spectrum Worldwide
(SWW).
The SCMS was awarded the Gold Label certification by
the International Association of Athletic Federations (IAAF)
following the 2011 and 2012 editions, placing it alongside
other world-class marathons such as the Berlin, London
and New York City marathons.
This year, Orchard Road, Sentosa and Esplanade Drive
will see the flag offs for the Marathon, Half Marathon, and
10km races respectively.
The various running routes will take participants across
the island and pass some of Singapore’s most iconic
landmarks such as Gardens by the Bay, East Coast Park,
the Singapore Flyer and Marina Bay Sands before leading
to the finish line at the Padang.
The Kids Dash category will offer our young runners a taste
of the main event as they race 750m in the highly popular
category. Another unique category, the Ekiden, will see
teams of six working together to race the Marathon in a
competitive relay format.
As well as devoting time to train for the big event, a large
number of SCMS participants have also dedicated their
run to a special cause this year by raising funds for local
charities on GIVE Asia, the event’s official fundraising
platform.
Every runner will have their own personal motivation driving
them towards the finish line on Sunday, 1 December. What’s
yours?

RUNNING FOR NOVA
Teresa is the supervisor of the NOVA Learning Intervention Programme at Morning Star Community Services. A
volunteer with the organisation for five years before deciding to become an employee, she says, “The Run for Good
2013 initiative is an excellent way for me to achieve many things. I get to improve my health, have fun with my
colleagues at Singapore’s largest and hippest racing event, and most importantly, raise funds for my favourite cause,
NOVA!”
NOVA is the acronym for ‘Nurturing One’s Valuable Attributes’, a learning intervention programme pioneered by
Morning Star Community Services in 2006.
NOVA’s individualised learning plan acknowledges that every child is a unique individual and underscores the
philosophy embraced by Morning Star; that a child is more than a student.
If anything, training for her very first 10km run has reminded Teresa of another important lesson – routine and discipline.
Teresa and 24 of her colleagues and their family members are running to raise funds for the NOVA Fund, a fund
supporting children who require financial aid to enrol in the NOVA Learning Intervention Programme. To donate,

RUNNING FOR AUTISM
Daniel (age six) and Ethan (age five) are joining forces in the Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore for the third year
running, once again raising funds and awareness for autism.
The brothers, who both have autism, were encouraged by their parents to join the run and dedicate their efforts to the
autism charities. The Khors want their boys to learn the value of perseverance in every endeavour they undertake in life.
In their journey, the Khors have seen how their boys have benefited from early diagnosis and early intervention. Through
this fundraising activity and participation in the run, the family hopes to help increase awareness for autism and raise funds
for the autism charities so that more individuals across all age groups can get access to services that the charities provide.
In 2011, the brothers raised $2,500 within a week for the Autism Association Singapore. Last year, they combined their
efforts with their father’s first marathon effort to raise $7,700 for the Autism Resource Centre, within just a month.
This year, the boys hope to cross the $10,000 mark in funds raised for the two charities as well as St Andrew’s
Autism Centre.

According to Barry, their participation in this year’s Standard Chartered Marathon Singapore
characterises the company’s ‘work hard, play hard’ motto.
As active pursuers of sports and healthy lifestyles, Barry and his teammates often take part in sporting
events such as the half ironman previously held in Singapore.
The Glencore team’s passion for sports extends beyond its primary function of keeping fit and relieving
stress to building team spirit, camaraderie and character. Thus, SportCares became the team’s choice of beneficiary as it shares their beliefs and presents
a great opportunity to let others experience the positive benefits that sports contributes to society.
This is their first time running for a charitable cause and they are sure it won’t be their last. Any donations can be made directly to the ‘Glencore Care for

Pacers - Your Inspiration
In this year’s Marathon, a total of 43 Official Pacers will provide
participants with a set pace for the duration of their run.
Using the Pacers as their official guide, runners will be able to
cross the finish line under their desired time.
All Pacers are experienced marathoners who will allow the
runners to relax and enjoy the race without having to continuously
check their watch or timing device.
The Pacers will be easily recognisable by their bright green
running singlets and different coloured balloons indicating their
pace times (3:45, 4:00, 4:15, 4:30, 4:45, 5:00, 5:15, 5:30)

I’m not the fittest kind of person,

Running had allowed me to
make like-minded friends who

I’m running. I want to give back

inspiring more people to take

I wanted to pay it forward in this

those around me to do likewise;
in life and in a race.
“People sometimes sneer
at those who run every day,
claiming they’ll go to any length
to live longer. But don’t think
that’s the reason most people
run. Most runners run not
because they want to live longer,
but because they want to live
life to the fullest. If you’re going
to while away the years, it’s far
better to live them with clear
goals than being fully alive in a
fog, and I believe running helps
you do that. Exerting yourself to
the fullest within your individual

running, and a metaphor for
life — and for me, for writing as

reputation of being so, running is
a social sport. It’s a great way of
meeting people, getting healthy
and helping the community. It’s
also a great way of discovering a
new city. When I travel, I get lost
in the streets and always return
having enriched my understanding
of the people and culture.

Pacing allows me to spread the enthusiasm and magic of the marathon to friends and family
(I already do this today and have influenced others to begin the journey to fitness, health
and competition). I am very happy to talk about the sport and exchange ideas on training,
motivation, sports science and performance. Running is more of a lifestyle than a sport and
many of the lessons learned along the way can be applied to everyday life. I hope to help
many achieve their personal bests during this year’s marathon!

Being a Pacer allows me to contribute to society and do my part as a passionate individual
who has benefitted greatly from the sport. The wide smiles across the faces of runners when
they cross the finish line at targeted timing serves as a reason for us to go the extra mile as
well. The satisfaction that I get from helping various runners in previous races is also one of
the reasons which make me want to continue being a Pacer too.

So far, running has always been about my targets and what PB’s I would want to set for
myself. For a change, it will not be about catching up and overtaking the person before me,
but I hope to take a different approach, to see other runners’ goals as my goal; helping and
encouraging them to achieve the timing that they have set their minds on.

I completed my first full marathon in 2011 with the 4:30hrs SCMS Pacers. I felt that the
encouragement and the sharing of running tips did help new runners like me to fulfil our goal.
Now in my second year with the SCMS Pacers, I hope to encourage runners once again on
the journey to their completion of the full marathon.

Being a Pacer is the best way to give back to fellow runners who are trying to achieve
their aim. I have never looked back and have progressed to do other races such as ultramarathons since after my first marathon at 2009. I am a living testimony that an average
person can attain extraordinary achievements if he puts in the effort and passion.

Running is not just only about racing. I want to be a Pacer to share my experience with
others. Running in a group creates a common goal, in this case a timed goal. You won’t easily
find camaraderie within such a short period. The runners that cross together at their stated
pace are the most appreciative people you will ever come across and now they possess
confidence to further their running accomplishments on their own. It’s an amazing feeling to
be helping someone do and achieve something that they once perceived as unachievable.
This ability serves as the driving force that propels them to the next level. It’s about how
every ounce of strength, determination and passion put through running gets churns up
into something I can look back and be proud of. Unlike a physical object where you can feel
and touch, it’s feels more like time. Whereby it may seem like it’s just several trivial numbers
thrown together by an automated clock, but each of these numbers, down to the hundredth
of a second has a meaning beyond what anyone can comprehend. It provides me a chance
to feel like a completely different person, a person who inspires others, and whom they strive
to be.

My recollection of running the 42.195km was one that would took an awful long time to
complete. But thanks to the Pacers, I managed to concentrate on the running (while
catching up) and eventually completed my first marathon race. Since then, I have never
stopped and each race make me realised the importance of having Pacers. Now that I’m a
Pacer too, I hope to do the same by helping others finish their race beautifully. It is going to
take some grit but we are going to get to the finish line together.

Inspired by what Pacers can do to help runners like myself (those who tend to run too fast

Reasons to be a Pacer
Besides being a Pacer who keeps pace for the runners, I would motivate them through
sharing running tips. Running is a sport that is definitely fun and enjoyable. Looking forward
to running with each and every one of you and being the “noisy” one.
Motivate others to start running as a sport and share past experiences.
I wish to motivate people to run just like how I was motivated. Being able to help and run
together with others is much more meaningful than just running for me.
Sharing my running experiences and to motivate other runners especially during the event
day. Our group of Pacers will be there to encourage the full marathon runners after they
cross the 30km mark.
To encourage both old and young people to run and have fun.

Women’s & Men’s Running Singlet
How To Wear Your Bib
Your bib comes attached with the B-Tag timing device (a single use bib-tag from Chronotrack Systems) for the Standard Chartered
Marathon Singapore 2013.
• Display your bib number clearly on the front of your singlet at all times during the race.
• Write your personal details on the reverse side of the bib (eg name, emergency contact number, blood type) with a ball point pen.
• DO NOT REMOVE the timing device from the bib.
• Do not alter, modify, fold or crumple the bib.
• Please ensure the bib is pinned in all four corners.
• Please ensure the bib is not covered (jackets, runner belts, water bottles, etc).
• Please ensure that you run across the timing mats at the Start Point (even if you are late) and on-route as proof of running the
prescribed route. Failure to do so will result in DNF (DID NOT FINISH) or DQ (DISQUALIFIED), and you will not receive any Finisher’s
Medal or Certificate of Participation.
Staggered Flag-Offs
• Runners from different categories start at different times. Remember to check your start time and arrive at least 30 minutes
beforehand.
• Runners who are late and start in another category will be considered as a non-finisher of the race.
• Please listen carefully to instructions when you are in your designated Race Pens.
• The Race Pens are assigned according to your race categories. If you are unsure of which pen you belong to, please queue at the
last pen.
• Please start off in a slow and orderly manner based on your estimated finishing time.
• Please observe proper running etiquette – let the faster runners move to the front.
• Please keep to the left side of the running path if you slow down or walk.
• Runners will not be allowed to pass through the Start Line 10 minutes prior to flag-off for all categories.
• Runners will be disqualified and no timing will be given if they do not participate in the category that they registered for.
• Runners who do not start within 30 minutes of their flag-off (Marathon, Half Marathon and 10km Race) will be disqualified and
for safety reasons, may not be allowed to run. No timing will be provided.

Race Day Tips
Here are some reminders on what you should do before you get to the
starting line and after the race.
Day Before Race
The Journey
• Take an easy jog to loosen your legs and prepare your
mind.
There are two main things you need to be thinking about
when you are running.
• Keep yourself hydrated throughout the day.
• Your intensity. Start at a slower pace and aim to build
your way into the run, finishing strong. The tendency in
longer runs is to start too fast and pay for it later in the
race so exercise control and work your way into it.
• Avoid unusual foods i.e. stick to what you have
been eating during training to avoid any stomach
issues that can come with new or unfamiliar foods.
Race Day Morning
• Wake up early and have your breakfast 2 - 3 hours prior
to your scheduled start time. This is to ensure that your
food is properly digested before the race.
• Get to the race venue early
• Your fuel. Ensure you are consistently taking in your
calories to replace what you are burning. Depending
on weight, experience etc. you should look to be taking
in gel every 45mins or so. Sip regularly on water or
electrolytes.
• Drink throughout the run - never take electrolyte drinks
and gels at the same time.
• When the going gets tough, focus on what you can
control. Think about your technique and your breathing.
• Prior to entering the starting pen, go for a 5 - 10 minute
walk or jog to warm up
At The Finish Point
Celebrate your success.
In The Pen
• Stay calm and visualise your race.
• Take advantage of the free massage service or go
for an easy walk or jog to help loosen up your
muscles.
• Do a head-to-toe warm-up with some dynamic
exercises to promote muscle stretch while keeping
blood flowing to the muscles. Some good examples
include:
• Eat. Ideally you should consume a mix of
carbohydrates and proteins within 30 minutes of
completing your run.
•
Front leg swings
•
Butt kicks
•
Knee lifts
•
Side leg swings
•
Use petroleum jelly to prevent chafing in areas
like inner thighs, under arms and nipples.
•
Get to the correct start position according to
your pace. If you are unsure of which pen you
belong to, please queue at the last pen so that
you will not block other runners.
At the Penson the spot
•
Jumping
RUN FOR A REASON

Runners’ Check List
How Fit Do I Feel?
It is essential that you are in “tip-top condition” before your race starts. Spend a minute to run through this checklist before you go
the distance. If anything buzzes, consider carefully and decide if you should really race.
Do I?:
Feel lethargic?
Feel feverish?
Feel unwell (headache, sore throat, cough or
runny nose)?
Have the symptoms of heart problems (breathing
difficulty, irregular heartbeat or chest pain)?
Have signs of stomachache, diarrhoea or nausea?
Have enough rest from the night before?
Feel mentally prepared for the race?
RUN FOR A REASON
“Though it’s only 10km for me, it’s just the beginning.
There’s always a first time, which leads to a second and
then a third. It’s a way to put down all work, free the
mind and just enjoy every moment of the race.”
Koh Guang Cheng

Ekiden Race
General Information For Ekiden Runners:
The Ekiden comprises of teams of six runners completing the Marathon course with each member running a leg of the course but not
necessarily of equal distance. At the end of the race, the team that registers the fastest cumulative time wins the relay.
To qualify for official placing, each runner on a team can only run one leg of the race. Succeeding runners that do not “connect” with
his or her preceding team mates (due to diversions, dropouts, etc.) will not be allowed to complete his/her respective leg and the team
will be disqualified (DQ).
Runner 2 will walk to the First Changeover Point at the Float @ Marina
after baggage deposit.
Baggage deposit locations for the
respective runners are listed below:
For Runners 3, 4, 5 & 6, shuttle buses will bring runners to their
respective Ekiden starting points after baggage deposit. The shuttle
service is optional for Ekiden runners. Participants may opt to make their
own way to the exchange points.
Visit www.marathonsingapore.com/events/ekiden-team-briefing for

3. After which, the kids will be channelled to their respective pick-up area according to their age groups to meet their parents.
For Parents/Guardians
1. After the kids’ flag-off, parents are encouraged to proceed to the AWA area where they can meet their kids.
2. Parents will enter the respective kids collection area (corresponding to their tag/kids age group).

Runners’ Estimated Timeline
This timeline will help you to estimate where a runner will be at a specific time. To co-ordinate your presence at specific spots, you
need to know the runner’s estimated completion time for the Marathon.
For instance, the runner expects to finish the Marathon in 4 hours 15 minutes. You should refer to the Sub 5 column of the chart. For
example, you will need to be at The Concourse by 06:11am, and at the finish stretch by 10:32am.
This timeline estimate assumes the runner maintains a constant speed throughout the race based on the average completion time.
Alternatively, you can gauge the progress of your friends on race day by using the race tracker on marathonsingapore.com.
(Do note that times and positions on race tracker are unofficial.)
Share your race experience, as it happens.

A suggestion: clearly display your bib number on the front of your running top. Raise your arms and give a winning smile as you cross
the Finish Line. A moment captured is a moment re-lived.
RUN FOR A REASON
“After running for so long, i started to feel pain on my
left knee. I told myself not to give up. As long as I am
still able, I will continue running.” Li Wei Qiang
