1. Economical and safety driving
Introduction
This training program can be successfully applied for all vehicle users, starting from
top management up to car, van and truck drivers.
Main objectives
a. For the company:
- Reducing the number and the consequences of car accidents.
- Reducing fuel consumption and minimizing environment pollution.
- Reducing total fleet costs (insurance, tires, spare parts, car repairs so on).
- Quick evaluation of company cars technical status.
- Improving “company image” related to the clients or to another traffic participants.
b. For car users:
- Learning and perfecting their skills and the qualities as drivers. Increasing safety
during road travels by positively influencing the driver behaviour through
observation, coaching and communication.
- Encouraging the course participants to debate, to reflect, to acknowledge all the
problems they can face in road traffic.
- Motivated, devoted and less stressed car users.
“Iceberg” view:
2. Training necessity:
- Is better to prevent car accidents in state to repair car damages
- Low level of driver's training to obtain driving license
- Correcting bad habits in car driving
- Can be taken specific measures to reduce number of car accidents and the fleet costs
- Result from majority of „No” answers from next questions:
Question Yes No
Are accidents reported and registered on regular basis?
Is it knew the frequency and causes of car accidents?
Is it knew the ratio from user's fault for car accidents?
Are car accidents analysed together with car users?
Is it a periodical newsletter related to road security results?
Is it a periodical company report with car usernames with accidents from their fault?
Is it a periodical report with car fuel consumption and fleet expenses?
Are car users on road tested before to use a company car?
Are taken measures and results after analysing car accidents?
Road traffic implies the continuous interaction of the following factors:
- The human factor (driver actions, reactions)
- The technical factor
- The road factor.
Statistical data: In more than 90% from car accidents the fault is from human error,
wrong and delayed manoeuvres!
3. CONCLUSION: intervention on the human factor, which presumes quickly and
correct traffic information’s data collection (road, traffic participants, signals so on),
analysing, quick and correct drivers actions will reduce car accidents ratio.
Main elements of economical and safety driving:
- Vehicle using adapted to road and weather conditions
- Anticipating and evaluating potential hazards
- Avoiding possible car accidents
- Reducing car accident consequences by choosing the correct solutions.
Economical driving = daily routine for car using in order to reduce: fuel consumption,
pollution and wear spare parts car.
Safety driving = observing the traffic regulations as well as those of civility and courtesy,
anticipate potential hazards and mistakes of all traffic participants.
Frequent mistakes:
- Ignorance, non-observing of the traffic code
- Aggressive behaviour
- High speed, haste in traffic
- The improper technical status of the vehicle.
A very well prepared driver can face the emergency situations that may occur in road
traffic!
Training program short description
a. Theoretical training module
I. Testing the theoretical knowledge about road legislation and risks evaluation
II. Theoretical programme, legislation, tips
Chapters:
- Road drive preparation
- Hazards perception
- The actions and reactions of the driver
Detailed approach of the following elements:
Daily checks, preparing the vehicle and the driving
Posture at the steering wheel, arms and legs using
Using the eyesight (central and marginal, eyes movement at 2 seconds) using the
hearing and other senses
Managing the controls (signalling, board instruments so on)
Adjusting and using the rear-view (6-8 seconds)
Visual awareness, details observing, the traffic participants, and hazards perception
Evaluating speed/distance (10-15 seconds)
Acceleration, deceleration, braking, economical driving
4. Safety space (2-6 seconds)
The manoeuvre of passing to another car
The veering and parking manoeuvres
Rules concerning the veering, the speed and the road line
Avoiding conflicting situations
Communication and safe driving
Emergency manoeuvres and exiting slide-slips
Vehicle maintenance, cleaning and order, security and stability of the merchandise
Top tips for ECO driving on night or bad weather driving conditions.
The theory is presented on DVD movie format.
III. Hazards perception evaluation, free debates and conclusions.
Participant will be tested on hazards perception, in order to consciously begin to recognize
the traffic potential dangers.
b. Basic training module – city traffic training
Each participant will drive in traffic conditions in order to starting to put consciously into
practice the theory taught.
Type of exercises:
- Checks, preparing the vehicle and the driving
- Posture at the steering wheel, arms and legs using
- ECO driving
- Safety space, so on.
We can provide theoretical module at the company’s locations and for city traffic
training session participants will be use their vehicles, based on the next main reasons:
- greater ability to learn in a familiar environment
- any change of car requires a time to accommodate and the driving skills ability
depending of car used daily for driving
- Cost reductions, so on.
.
Driver assessment
We can assess the most important risks, i.e.:
Evaluating risks of the driver
Age
Driving experience
Severs accidents in last 3 years
Minor accidents in last 3 years
Driving licence suspension in last 3 years
Audio-visual testing in last year
Past driving training
5. Evaluating risks of the driving
Travelled kilometres by year
The type of the road used in daily drives
The average drives hours daily
Night-time driving (between 00:00 and 06:00 hour)
Evaluating risks of the vehicle
Type of vehicle
Engine size
ABS system
Frontal airbags
Side airbags
ESP system
We can provide driver assessment based on that evaluation risks, including with
recommendations for improvements.
Successful program implementation requires a top-down management approach.
The company’s policy must not only to reflect the importance of training but also the
commitment of the management. It needs to become an integral part of the company’s
culture. Also, continuous performance improvement, records keeping, periodical analysis,
follow up and corrective actions through implementation of KPI’s for:
- Accident/incident statistics
- Fuel consumption
- Maintenance costs
- Insurance premium, so on.
The training program has a friendly approach and put the accent on daily routine elements
of driving, based on day-to-day experience, without pushing the participants to reach an
“experienced level”, because for that level it’s requiring many months of practice.
Training advantages:
Flexibility
- According to the training level desired to be achieved
Adaptability
- Interacted with other training modules or department regional meetings, team
buildings
Focus on results
- Reducing the number and severity of car accidents, reducing the total fleet
costs.
