Seamless integration for
mergers acquisitions
At the time of the acquisition, the Boomi sales group and the Dell
sales group each ran its own SaaS instance of the Salesforce
CRM application. Both groups used Salesforce for vital sales
functions such as generating leads, assigning teams to follow up
on opportunities, and tracking results. With the acquisition, the
sales groups saw an opportunity to share sales information.
The Dell IT group used the Boomi integration platform application
to unify the Salesforce.com instances, enabling fully integrated
and synchronised customer information across sales groups and
businesses processes.
Applying Salesforce instance integration within Dell Technologies’
own sales operations has also generated measurable benefits:
/ 75% shortening of integration time-to-value
/ 100% of manual data entry processes eliminated
/ 30% reduction in solution total cost of ownership (TCO)
Working anytime, anywhere,
on any device
In recent years, Marks and Spencer has undergone an internal
technology revolution. The leading retailer has been seeking
new ways to enable staff to access information, regardless
of their location, in a quick, easy and familiar format. Dell
Technologies worked with MS to implement Microsoft Office
365. Adopting cloud-based Office 365 is enabling staff to work
anytime, anywhere using their internal portal ‘MS World’.
The solution allows staff to carry out their day-to-day tasks
off-site – whether they’re visiting suppliers, working from
home, or travelling to a store. MS has seen a resulting
boost in productivity, as staff no longer need to return to
their desk to work. It also means that in-store staff have
immediate access to information on mobile devices, which
they can share with colleagues and customers – a capability
that is already garnering praise from users. By connecting
their team, MS enables faster decision-making, and has
streamlined company-wide projects and initiatives.
Connecting international teams
Food manufacturer Dr. Oetker has cross-geographical
teams all over the world in product development, marketing,
customer support, IT, and other areas. To improve
international collaboration and teamworking, Dell Technologies
worked with Dr. Oetker to develop a video conferencing
solution using Skype for Business.
The company’s teams now use Skype for Business to work
together more efficiently. Using the solution, employees
can more easily undertake everyday tasks – like developing
products, interviewing job candidates, and providing tech
support – more efficiently. They can also often avoid costly
and time-consuming travel.
The company’s IT Services team works worldwide, providing
technical support wherever there are Dr. Oetker employees.
Communication and collaboration is key for this team
to provide good, consistent IT support. Major projects
would ordinarily have involved team members travelling
internationally for several weeks. Now they can use Skype
for Business video calls to handle most of the preparation
work remotely, minimising the time that employees have to be
away from their families.

44% of retailers say they do not have a security

every part of retailers and 41% of end users go

topic of security no longer only pertains to the
CSO CIO. Retailers across the board should
be considering how their teams access, process
and protect data.

Protect your Intellectual Property
Manufacturing organisations represented
the largest share of incidents involving

General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
Promising fines of up to 4% annual turnover or
20 million euros, the GDPR poses as not only
a major economic threat to retailers but also
to their brand reputation. The future shopper
wants to know they can trust retailers with
their personal data so getting your governance
framework and security strategy right is key.
Protect the Digital Wallet
Advancements and increasing adoption of
frictionless payment services is providing cyber
criminals a new playground - Digital Wallets.
Retailers not only need protect their customers
personal data and financial information they
also need to ensure they are validating their

Protecting customer data with analytics
How can you drive new value from customer information and
transactional data, while also protecting it securely? Global
payments leader Mastercard wanted to use predictive analytics
to study customer purchase patterns and behaviour, in order to
derive valuable new insights. It needed an analytics environment
with the scale to deal with data from 2.2 billion payment cards
globally, and up to 160 million transactions per hour. At the same
time, it required the highest levels of security to protect this
sensitive personal and financial data.
Mastercard worked with Dell Technologies companies to build
a secure PCI-certified Hadoop cluster to enable data analytics.
The solution has increased security and fraud protection, via
analysing customer purchasing patterns, affinities and rhythms
using machine learning. It has also helped drive business
value from anonymised data on share of wallet compared to
competition, average spend and purchase frequency. This helps
Mastercard to identify marketing opportunities and measure
return on investment – while protecting its sensitive data.
“Data privacy and protection is

Retailers are using intelligent technologies
such as radio frequency identification (RFID);
driverless trucks; logistics tracking; mobile
devices; augmented reality; and more to
reduce their environmental footprint and drive
sustainability. These technologies promise to
be effective testing grounds for integrating
sustainability into retail store operations, truck
fleets and supply chains.
With two-thirds of consumers saying they
avoid specific brands or products due
to environmental concerns, the topic of
sustainability has never been more important
for the retail industry and brands are now
competing to be the most purposeful. Retailers
are not only able to protect our planet but
enhance brand awareness and drive cost-

Harvesting insights
Sustainable agriculture business AeroFarms is bringing
new levels of precision and productivity to farming in its
production facilities – with the help of Dell Technologies.
AeroFarms leveraged the support of the Dell Technology IoT
Technology Advisory Services team. Through this program,
Dell worked with AeroFarms to develop IoT architecture and
technology recommendations, to define use cases, and to build
implementation roadmaps.
In the company’s innovative indoor vertical farm, sensors and
cameras in the aeroponic growing systems gather data on
everything from moisture and nutrients to light and oxygen.
The sensors capture data about the operating and growing
environment and send it to the Dell platform. Information is then
relayed over the farm network, making it available for monitoring
and analysis.
AeroFarms is growing its machine learning capabilities with Dell
Technologies. The goal is to automate the analytics processes
that help the company’s scientists identify patterns in the images
and data generated by the growing system. This will enable a
higher order of intelligence and more complex decision-making.
An example is real-time quality control that takes into account
even more diverse types of data, including machine data,
historical growing data, environmental data and quality data.
One project focused on improving real-time quality control
through multi-spectral imaging of grow trays. Special cameras
with integrated structured light scanners send data to the Dell
platform, which creates 3D topological images of each grow
tray. When an anomaly is detected, the system sends an alert
to operators on the farm floor. Ultimately, this project gives
AeroFarms the potential to increase yields and further improve
its ability to optimise the nutritional content of its produce.

Our Solutions
It is a transformative time in retail. Our solutions are
focussed on supporting retailers as they transform to
become leaders in a digital age
Capitalising on the opportunities that face
the Connected Retailer requires a variety
of advanced technologies – and the deep
expertise to tailor and integrate them across
the value chain. Enabling and informing the
exploration of these opportunities for retailers,
we deliver innovative solutions through a wide
range of technologies:
22. THE CONNECTED RETAILER 22
Customer sentiments and brand power are
two major factors driving the retail industry.
With 73% of customers preferring to do
business with brands that offer a personalised
buying experience, data analytics has never
been so important.
Dell Technologies provides significant analytics
capabilities across every part of the value
chain, to create insights and deliver value.
Retailers can use data analytics to predict
the needs of shoppers and personalise each
buying experience. Gathering and analysing
online and in-store buying behaviour data
also enables retailers to learn how this affects
shopping habits. These data insights help
develop targeted marketing campaigns, with
personalised promotional incentives that
encourage increased spending.
Analytics can provide cost-savings across the
retail value chain, by driving internal organisational
efficiency and staff productivity, and optimising
supply chain, warehouse management and
logistics. Analytics can also drive in-store strategy
by supporting inventory management, visual
merchandising and staff management.
Smart analytics for retail
Our Smart Analytics solutions help retailers
understand their customers and organisation,
to drive higher productivity and efficiency
while improving service. The solution helps
support the retailer to map the current and
desired status of their enterprise data strategy.
By developing a proof of concept around a
use case, you can validate the value of a new
customer proposition before investing in a full
solution.
Validating the use case prior to putting it into
production helps inform the solution specific to
the end-user, and identify a process and skills
roadmap for implementation. The retailer can
then choose to implement the full analytics
solution, to support continuous development
of valuable propositions for consumers
and strengthen their marketing strategy.
Data analytics enables a true actionable
understanding of the organisation and
customer behaviour, delivering real benefits.

The Internet of Things
Retailers are already innovating with the
Internet of Things (IoT) to offer new
services, reshape the customer experience
and enter new markets. IoT is about more
than connecting things, it requires artificial
intelligence (AI). In fact, AI and IoT should be
seen as a single interdependent ecosystem
spanning across the organisation and beyond,
into both the physical world and the cloud.
IoT presents opportunities for retailers to
develop vastly improved ecosystems that
connect both the physical and digital world,
allowing real-time interaction with consumers
both inside and outside the store.
IoT also provides significant opportunities for
retailers as part of the early stage of the value
chain, in supply chain and logistics to realise
energy efficiencies and optimise sales-floor
management using sensors.
IoT enables retailers to explore opportunities
across three key areas:
Customer Centricity
By collecting data at each connection point,
retailers will have a better understanding of the
customer journey and can deliver personalised
offers. Retailers can create next-gen customer
experiences by tracking and combining
behaviour from in-store, mobile retail or digital
commerce.
Cost Reduction

Integrating retail applications to enable
greater connectivity to customers
supported by an agile application
development framework
Dell Technologies company Boomi provides unified application
integration and data exchange services. Boomi’s integration
platform enables retailers to pass orders, receipts, invoices and
confirmations from front-end systems, and map the data to their
back-end systems. It provides a key integration mechanism to
enable the retailer’s data to interact with external platforms such
as Shopify, Amazon and Ebay. Results include rapid time-to-value,
significant reduction of data errors over manual data entry, and
substantial cost savings over traditional integration solutions.
Optimising the

28. THE CONNECTED RETAILER 28
Innovation can help retailers better meet
customer needs in terms of convenience,
choice, ‘shopability’ and price value. It can also
help them succeed beyond the store and drive
brand equity. Consequently, for a retailer to
grow or stay ahead, it must innovate constantly.
Establishing a clear innovation strategy allows
retailers to test new value propositions,
implement a framework for continuous
innovation, and allocate budget towards future
innovation projects. Through this, retailers
are able to collect vast amounts of customer
data to inform their product development.
Testing new products incrementally also allows
innovation at a fraction of the cost and time, to
bring new valuable products to market, tailored
to the needs of customers.
Grow a retail culture of
innovation
Dell Technologies gives retailers strategic
technology and expertise for digital
transformation. We provide guidance for
building effective innovation frameworks and
driving a culture of innovation throughout
the business. Our consultants develop an
enterprise-wide innovation strategy, based on
the approach that teams can either succeed or
‘fail fast’, learn rapidly, and move forward.
A robust governance structure enables retailers
to have a single management view of the
enterprise innovation portfolio. They learn how
to quickly test new products as prototypes
and utilise customer feedback to inform the
development of new offerings and services,
tailored to customer needs.
The Dell EMC Lean Innovation framework is
used to prioritise, test and categorise ideas from
across the retail value chain. The framework uses
rapid product development to test the viability
and feasibility of an idea before it becomes a
prototype, and to drive down start-up costs. It
enables you to acquire customers and tap into
new markets by driving a weekly innovation
cycle. This innovation approach creates a culture
of continuous improvement and inclusivity, as
ideas are solicited from all business units across
the retail organisation.

Virtual Reality (VR) provides an immersive and
interactive audio-visual experience. VR enables
numerous new opportunities – from customer
experience both in-store and online, through to
supply chain and manufacturing.
Enhancing customer
experience
VR is increasingly being used to enhance
customer experience. More than just providing
an unforgettable experience to attract shoppers
into stores, it has the potential to make the
way we shop easier and better. Imagine trying
on clothes without stepping foot in a store,
or taking a car for a test drive without visiting
the dealership. VR presents a new way for
consumers to effortlessly interact with your
brand and products – and even to purchase
goods directly within the virtual environment.
Supporting operational
excellence
Retailers are using VR to optimise and enrich
operations across the supply chain. Product
designers are given the freedom to unleash
their creativity by immersion in a world that
reduces the normal physical limitations and
costs associated with prototyping. Retail store
designers are able to seamlessly visualise, test
and optimise the layout of stores before any
physical change.
Enabling insight and analysis
Collecting data on customer behaviour and
interactions with products and services in the
virtual world presents a new source of value
to retailers. By analysing this rich data, retailers
are able to better understand their customers,
and create relevant and accurate go-to-market
strategies.
Dell Technologies has been a driving force in
the development of VR technology. We provide
the core platform to create and power these
new experiences from end-to-end. Using the
Dell platform for VR, retailers can develop
content and enhance it with our advanced
commercial visualisation solutions. Many of the
world’s leading retailers and consumer goods
companies are already using our VR platform to
drive value.

Manufacturing and design
/ Robotic assembly line: The manufacturing
process of assembling goods can be
automated with robots.
/ Movement of materials: Automated vehicles
can quickly transport materials around the
factory, particularly if materials or products
are stored in dangerous environments. Robots
can increase productivity by removing human
limitations in the manufacturing process.
Distribution
/ Keeping track of inventory: Robots can
quickly locate items in the warehouse to
speed up shipping.
/ Automated movement of goods: Robots can
transport goods around the warehouse and
onto delivery vehicles. This can help make
better use of vertical space in the warehouse,
reducing costs.
Sales and customer service
/ Attracting customer attention: Because retail
robots are a new innovation, customers are
curious to see them in action. This can drive
in-store sales and general brand awareness.
/ Assisting customers on premises: Robots can
easily help customers locate goods in store,
answer general product queries, and make
product recommendations, to both improve
customer experience and help drive sales.
/ Chatbots: For online sales and after-sales,
chatbots are being used to answer the first
line of customer queries, allowing skilled
personnel to answer more complicated
customer questions. Chatbots can also
help drive extra sales through product
recommendations.
Robots can be a disruptive force for retailers
to gain competitive advantage – with smart
automation solutions from Dell Technologies.
For many, robots already work alongside a highly
skilled human workforce, to drive a personalised
and interactive shopping experience.
A robot might be a physical machine that
handles products in stores, logistics hubs and
warehouses – or a smart self-checkout terminal.
Increasingly it could be a ‘software robot’ –
such as chatbots or other automated software
services – that facilitate the digital shopping
experience.
The frontline retail workforce is being
transformed, for the benefit of consumers, the
business and the workforce. Robots can help
minimise workforce risk by performing repetitive
and dangerous tasks. This helps drive employee
satisfaction by empowering the workforce
with high-value tasks and reducing health risks
posed by hazardous environments. Operations
such as manufacturing, stocking shelves and
checking-out can be automated. By integrating
robots into the value chain, retailers can realise
cost savings and operational efficiencies.

Evolving your workforce around digital and
automation is now more important than ever.
The nature of work is changing and retailers are
shifting towards a more diverse workforce, to

partner organisations. Even your customers
can themselves become a valuable workforce
resource, in scenarios like peer-to-peer advice
and reviews, crowd-sourcing of concepts, or
social promotion.

retailers to be more productive and competitive
with collaboration and social platforms
becoming a workplace tool. Dell EMC, using
persona matching, provides the right device,
to the right person, at the right time. Whether
it is online, mobile or instant messaging, having
actionable insights at the fingertips of your
workforce allows a retailer to service the digital-
native shopper.
Dell EMC can bring together an integrated
business consulting and technology team
to assess the opportunities and challenges
for your workforce. The benefits for an agile
workforce go beyond productivity and can drive
