ANNUAL

Coaching With Substance
2016 - 2017
This has been a busy year at Pure Heart Centre seeing clients daily and continuing to serve Coaching with
Substance by offering the service of emotional and spiritual healing. The presenting issues for clients have
been a combination of anxiety from unexpressed childhood issues, the fear of survival, unexpected life
change and nervous tension. Other issues were depression, the inability to relax and sleep, as well as using
food and alcohol as a coping mechanism during the dysfunctional time.
Relationship counselling included emotional and mental abuse resulting in a sense of powerlessness due to
narcissistic partners. There was a need to understand how to set boundaries, communicate in an assertive
manner, along with a desire to gain awareness in how to be more focused on themselves and what they
wish to manifest in the future.
The fear of facing change and new beginnings are also major issues this year, along with change of
employment and mitigating addictive behaviours, such as eating disorders and alcoholism. The sessions
consisted of counselling techniques, astrology, understanding of emotional journeys and spiritual or
emotional healing. The session would take up to 2.5 hours and in this time, Iwas privileged to build a strong
rapport with each client, witnessing amazing breakthroughs which ensured the client left feeling more
empowered.
The client usually comes to the session in a state of upheaval, emotional distress or confusion, along with a
sense of powerlessness due to their situation. By the end of the session, each client admitted that they felt
a new sense of lightness, clarity, strength and happiness.
Follow up support was offered whenever they felt the need and access to recorded meditations and
gratitude tapes for ongoing relaxation was provided, as this continues the āletting goā process. Follow up
text messages were also given, should they have questions or concerns. The women were made aware of
www.createlivegrow.com, which is a group for uplifting women, to which they can belong to and continue
to grow in, with loving support.
I look forward to continuing supporting Coaching with Substance in this new financial year!

Maria Pau ā Founder & Head Coach
Maria Pau
Despite another year with no support from government funding or grants
acquitted, we continue to thrive on community support and word-of-mouth.
Our low overhead, no PAYG salaries and volunteer support from community
members means that more money were being directed to serving those afļ¬icted by addiction, mental
illness, domestic violence, suicide, criminality, victimhood and stigmatisation.
This year, my focus has been on the completion of my PhD research, so that I can feature to the world
how āCollaborative Peer Recovery Coachingā can indeed be a solution to our ongoing addiction and
mental illness epidemic. To do this, a move to Toowoomba was needed to nest into our headquarters
near University of Southern Queensland, where my PhD is nearing completion.
Apart from the continuing success of my doctoral studies in yielding evidence-based outcomes needed
to provide much needed insight into substance use disorders. I have had the much-needed break from
the charities operations and one-on-one coaching to dive deeper into the etiology of chemical and
behavioural dependence. Most importantly, I have had the time to reļ¬ect upon many aspects of this
coaching intervention to improve its efļ¬cacy and understand its mitigating factors
.
Another highlight for the year is the acquisition of Sublimate Brazilian Jiu Jitsu martial arts centre into
the CWS family, so that we can offer a mind-body-spirit approach to wellness.
We hope you enjoy reading our journey for the 2016-2017, as much as we have enjoyed serving our
community, to keep it safe from the harms of substance abuse issues.

On July 22, 2016, the ļ¬rst Mental Health Reform Working Group meeting was held, after Expressions of
Interest were sent out and ļ¬nal short-list invited to the meeting. It was attended by 24 peers with mental
health issues, as well as worker-peers that represent or work for organisations that provide services
which take care of peopleās mental health and well-being.
This meeting, attended by Maria Pau, was dedicated to prioritising the key issues that have emerged
through the quantitativeand qualitative data collection and analysis undertaken by GCPHN. The issues
that were identiļ¬ed were under the following 3 areas: Indigenous / CALD/ LGBTIQPAN+, Low intensity,
Children age 0-12. It was acknowledged that each of these areas has been identiļ¬ed by service providers
andconsumers/carers and community as areas of need or focus.
Further meetings were scheduled to meet the internal and external requirements for the needs
assessment, including reviewing theneeds identiļ¬ed through the PHN triangulation process and
determining the most appropriate nextsteps for these. Further meetings were held to address co-design
and governance timeframes and member availability.
Once the meetings were completed, an āExpression of Interestā were tendered to organsations to meet
the needs of the Gold Coast populace and the following report was completed, entitled:

Coaching With Substance

Maria has been a
āTranscendental Meditationā
or TM practitioner and
consult with high-level
practitioners and researchers
in the ļ¬eld of Vedic Science. A
2002 study published in the
āThe American Journal of
Psychiatryā (Goldstein et al,
2002) examined the role of
certain brain regions in drug
addiction. They found that
meditation gives practitioners
a natural high through the
brains neurotransmitters.
Proponents of āTMāhave long discovered these ļ¬ndings, after doing a meta-analysis of 27 studies in 1995
(OāConnell & Alexander, 1995) where they they also found that those with substance use disorders (SUD)
rely on chemicals to get high but those that do TM experience the same āhighā or happiness in their the
prefrontal cortex because they become āsuper stimulatedā without any withdrawals or negative
ramiļ¬cations.
A prominent 2005 study by Harvard neuroscientist Dr. Sara Lazar showed that meditators had
signiļ¬cantly more neural density, cortical thickness, and overall activity within their prefrontal cortexes.
What does this mean for people wanting to overcome addiction? It means, meditation will stimulate and
train the brain to be happy and "naturally high", without the need for alcohol, prescriptions, marijuana,
drugs, cigarettes, or any other addictive substance to feel good.
So as not to detract from her PhD studies, Maria has decided to hold regular weekly meditation sessions
starting from Aug 2016 and still ongoing. This has been successful with 2-5 regular attendees per weekly
session. These sessions consist of 20 minutes of meditation and then a talk about its beneļ¬ts. The

This was another course that Maria purchased and reported on last
ļ¬nancial-year. It teaches how to launch Clickfunnel membership sites that can
generate six ļ¬gures a year in clients and members for Coaching with
Substance. It also provides a learning platform and because it is
password-protected, it can generate income for CWS while teaching members
about how to achieve success in long-term recovery.
With the help of a virtual assistant, we were able to construct an 8-week
training site, ļ¬lled with images, assessments and around 30 videos that will
provide a foundation for long-term recovery. It will teach clients the need for a
āCollaborative Peer Recovery Coachāand give them the tools and training they
need to quit for good.

including free video training and weekly webinars on

funnels to maximise downloads; podcasting equipments;
how to record a show and how to go LIVE. She has decided
to delay launch of her Addiction Recovery Podcast until
after her PhD, so she can capitalise on the Dr. M Power
branding. Her podcast will be named after her book series
as: Kill Your Addiction Podcast

Spotlight was thrown to Mariaās home country Philipppines, as
newly elected President Rodrigo Duterte ļ¬ght a very public and
brutal war on drugs.
Some results and statistics were:
ā¢ 11% decrease in crime volume
ā¢ 4 million identiļ¬ed as drug users
ā¢ Over 700,000 surrendered as drug users
ā¢ PhP120 billion drug industry identiļ¬ed
ā¢ PhP 14.5 billion of these were seized
As the ļ¬gures of surrenderees were skyrocketing, Maria decided
to confer with Department of Social Welfare and Development
contacts, as well as her political networks to see how Coaching
with Substance can position itself to service the high needs of this
country.
A trip to the Philippines was arranged for three weeks, where
Maria researched the readiness for this country to source
appropriate coaching services for its surrenderees. It was found
that the budget per person was less than an Australian dollar for
long-term recovery, hence contracts were deemed of no
econonic value and unsuccessfully procured.

7. Move to Toowoomba
When Maria returned to Gold Coast from the Philippines, it was decided that a move to Toowoomba, nearer
the University of Southern Queensland would be advantageous to facilitate the smooth ļ¬nish of her PhD
studies. She prepared for this move and was living and studying in Toowoomba by May 2017. In this time,
Maria decided to seriously pursue self-defence and martial arts training at Sublimate Brazilian Jit Jitsu. She
started a membership at this club in May 2017 and attended up to ļ¬ve sessions weekly.
This club had management issues around June 2017 and Maria saw this as an opportunity to acquire
Sublimate BJJ and make it an arm for Coaching with Substance to deal with the issues stated above.
Community support can be gathered and possible crowdfunding efforts can be engaged. Grants can also be
written to provide a solution for domestic violence and youth delinquency.
8. Acquisition of Sublimate Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
As Maria grew to love the grappling arts, she believed this can be a way
for:
ā¢ Those experiencing domestic violence issues to learn
self-defence, hence cultivate the conļ¬dence and ļ¬tness to
protect themselves from an intoxicated and/or violent
partner
ā¢ Those perpetrating domestic violencecan use wrestling as a
way to curb their anger, thus having an outlet for their
excessive negative energies and ongoing, often deep-seated
emotional turmoil they need to release.
ā¢ Those experiencing juvenile delinquency can use mixed martial arts as a way tovent their
repressed emotions, and help deal with puberty and other teenage issues

We have slightly decreased our revenue this year, to $91,249. This annual
revenue consisted of $35,000 worth of coaching and consulting fees, whilst
$68,237.25 came from donors. There was a recovery coaching student paying
off her tuition and Monk Xu had clients and book sales, which means that service provision revenue was
only $23,012 because Maria was concentrating her efforts on PhD studies.

Dear Sir or Madam;
Re: COACHING WITH SUBSTANCE ā FINANCIAL RECORDS
I conļ¬rm that I hold a Bachelor's degree Majoring in Accounting and an Associate Diploma in
Business ā Accounting.
In addition to these qualiļ¬cations I am an experienced Financial Controller with more than twenty
years experience working with ļ¬nancial acuity, in accounting and ļ¬nancial management positions
for small to medium business entities.
I declare that I have sighted the Associationās ļ¬nancial records to 30 June 2017 and the records
show that the Association has bookkeeping processes in place to adequately record the
associationās income and expenditure and dealings with its assets and liabilities.
Yours sincerely,
Perry Jenks, B.Bus.Acc, Ass Dip.Acc
